Fishing Alberta With Paul C.

stur3_jul19_12
This week, I thought I would share a Sturgeon fishing adventure from last weekend. Jay is another fishaholic who enjoys fishing the mighty North Sakatchewan rive in and around Edmonton.

The river offers some excellent fishing for Walleye, Goldeye, Sauger, Pike and of course, Sturgeon. They can be caught up to 100 pounds. They are quite rare and are on the endangered species list and only spawn every seven years.

Their fish eggs make really good caviar. Jay is a volunteer angler and catches these fish, checks them for an electronic tracking device and tag. If there is no tag he will measure the fish then attach the tag. SRD collects the data to monitor their movements and general health.

As the photos show, the fish is handled in a safe manner. The cradle helps keep the fish in the water breathing while taking measurements. The length is 42 inches and the girth is 14.5 inches. The top of the fish has very sharp scales and should not be touched with the bare hands.

The equipment needed to catch them is heavy fishing gear; 30 pound test braided line, cradle that is 36 to 48 inches long, pliers to remove the barbless hooks. It takes a lot of patience to reel in these monsters of fresh water. It took Jay between five to 10 minutes to reel in and I offered only assistance making sure he had his tools and took photos for him.

I was very impressed to see how he handled the fish and made sure the fish was fully capable of swimming under its own power.

Catch and release only is allowed for these fish. You can apply to SRD to become a volunteer angler and will give some tools and training on how to catch Sturgeon.
Contact SRD of Alberta for more details. Stay tuned for Jay's Wabamun pike that are monsters.

Today's Veggie: Beet Greens

Beet greens can also be used to make 'cabbage rolls’, a little darker coloured than regular cabbage rolls, but have a super flavour.

See how here.
