City Of St. Albert Encourages Commuters To Carpool And Win
Carpool Week October 22 to 26
The City of St. Albert is encouraging commuters to take part in Carpool Week, October 22 through 26.
By participating, commuters will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs, and also have an opportunity to win some great prizes including a new iPad, Ticketmaster coupons, a GPS navigational system and $500 in free fuel.
To enter, visit www.carpool.ca and take part in these prize-winning activities:
· Register with www.carpool.ca as a new user
· Return to www.carpool.ca as an existing user and search for carpool partners
· Submit an inspirational carpool story
· Use the new www.carpool.ca Trip Tracker feature to measure savings resulting from trips not taken, or
· Use social media to play ‘Transportation Trivia’ and ‘Carpool Tag’. Visit www.facebook.com/CarpoolDOTCA or follow @CarpoolDotCA on Twitter for details.
Commuters are encouraged to use the carpool-matching service provided at www.carpool.ca. The user-friendly system is secure and free. As more people register, carpooling becomes a viable transportation alternative for commuters.
“Carpooling is a great way to decrease our impact on the environment by reducing the amount of cars on the road,” says Kalen Pilkington, Environmental Coordinator - Community, City of St. Albert. “It also makes good economic sense for motorists. At a time when people are really trying to watch their pennies, carpooling is an easy way to reduce costs on fuel, parking and vehicle maintenance.”
Although the costs of gas and parking are readily noticeable, the true costs of owning and operating a vehicle are much higher than most drivers would suspect. According to Statistics Canada, the average Canadian household spends over $12,000 per year on transportation alone, the second highest family expense next to shelter.
“It’s important to note that carpooling doesn’t require a large commitment,” says Anne Marie Thornton, Manager of Carpool.ca. “Our desire to save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions tends to be secondary to our need for convenience, so consider carpooling once or twice a week to start.”
Carpool Week is being held in 13 communities throughout Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. It is being celebrated in the Capital Region from October 22 to 26, 2012. Regional sponsors include Alberta Motor Association, the City of Spruce Grove and the City of St. Albert.
For more information, visit www.carpool.ca.
