Maple Flag At Cold Lake - Photos By James

A St. Albert's Place regular reader was recently at Cold Lake to take in the annual Maple Flag event. He wishes to be know simply as 'James', but has an obvious skill with a camera and sent us a series of photographs of various aircraft. We are presenting them a couple at a time in an ongoing series. They should be of interest to many of our military family readers.

US F-16 just leaving the ground on full afterburner takeoff.  Confession:  as a Canuck, I'm a Hornet/Superhornet kind of guy.  Luvs me them twin engines & the volume of sound they make on afterburner.  However, when this sucka went past, it may have been even a bit louder.

Daughter and Dad duet

Layla (Vocals and guitar) and

Rocko Vaugeois (Vocals, guitar, bass and drums)

Layla
was born with music in her blood. She literally grew up from day one in a 24 track studio with mother, Mavis McCauley who was in the midst of a very successful recording career and father, Rocko Vaugeois who was the mainstay of One Horse Blue, as singer, songwriter, producer/engineer. Layla inherited a quality vocal blend of both parents. Her Mom with a raunchy Janis Joplin style and dad with a sultry, smokey sound. At the age of 14 she made a two week trip to Vancouver to visit dad, which turned into six years and started joining him on stage at a regular restaurant gigs, on the condition that each week she would learn a new song. This turned into quite a substantial repertoire. Unlike most singers who need help to find more power and stamina, Layla needed to harness her power. In 1994 she started working with Judith Rabinovich renowned vocal coach for Sarah Mclachlan and many others. In 1996 and 1998 she landed her first professional engagement in The United Emirates of Arabia. In 2003 she started appearing at The Roxy, one of Vancouver’s busiest nightclubs as a special guest and soon became a regular feature artist. She currently fronts the house band there “Troys Are Us”. Layla is an accomplished guitar player, pianist and drummer. We are happy to have Layla grace our stage with her father.

Rocko - As a singer songwriter, recording artist, drummer, guitarist, bassist or a producer, his experience in the music industry dates back to the early 70's. Current and past stints have put Rocko on stages all over the world and he has played and toured with a lot of big name artists. Being the main leader, in the band One Horse Blue, was key to their success which got the band over 10 top ten singles on the charts back in the day. Rocko is a St. Albert native who spent a lot of years on the west coast recording, doing session work and what I like to say truly living the dream. Nice to have Rocko as part of our music room regularly as he has been the sit in for Fred Larose at the Thursday singer songwriters showcase and looking very forward to uniting a father-daughter duo on this night.
