A Tour Of Edmonton's Urban Farms

Our intrepid St. Albert Place special correspondent was on the job again last Sunday morning and sends along this report.

About 400 people signed up for the three-hour tours. Our guide was a young biology grad from U of A, very informative and always available to answer questions.

Our bus (8:30 a.m.) was quite full of all ages from babies through old farts like me!

Stop #1 - Horse Hill Berry farm has been in their family since around 1880! Not aways as a berry farm but always farmed.
Stop #2 Riverbend is on beautiful bend in the Saskatchewan river and has been in their family since the 1950's. It started as a hog farm but now is veggies and Saskatoons. They are allowed to pump water from the river to irrigate if it is very dry. We were told that the water level can change by five feet in an hour! Thinking I'll not be on the river when that happens.

We traveled through beautiful farm land. I hope Edmonton does not sell it to developers. If the drought in the U.S. continues, we will need a supply of locally grown produce. I heard on a TV show that the Colorado river does not reach the sea now and it is full of all kinds of undesirable chemicals that they are using to irrigate farm land.

Water Conservation Plan Balances Future
Growth With Environmental Initiatives
Council approves long-term planning document
City Council approved a new Water Conservation, Efficiency and Productivity Plan (CEPP) that balances future growth within St. Albert with environmental initiatives which will maximize water conservation.
The long-term plan, developed by Administration and approved at the August 27 City Council meeting, links the water conservation targets from the City’s Environmental Master Plan (EMP) with current and proposed water conservation measures to achieve the set targets. It provides an in-depth review of historical water usage as well as a complete picture of current usages, St. Albert’s potable water and wastewater systems, environmental initiatives and the areas most in need of improvement.
“The Water Conservation, Efficiency and Productivity Plan gives us insight into how our community uses water and will help us to make more informed decisions in the future which will lead to reduced water use,” says Leah Jackson, Environmental Manager. “Currently, residents are the largest water consumption group in St. Albert, representing 76 per cent of the total potable water use.”
Water conservation has been a priority of the City of St. Albert since the development of the EMP in 2009. One of its goals is to reduce water consumption to 200 litres or less per person per day by 2020. Water consumption has decreased in St. Albert, moving from a per-capita rate of 266 litres in 2010 to 262 litres in 2011.
In March 2012, the City’s Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) recommended the City continue with its existing water conservation programs and pursue eight other initiatives over the next three to five years. The EAC also recommended that priority be given to three key initiatives:
· Water-efficient bylaw – adopt a water-efficient bylaw requiring water-efficient fixtures in all new developments and retrofits. Target date: 2013.
· Escalating block rates – adopt escalating block rates on water bills, which increase water rates when a user consumes above average water volumes. Target date: 2013.
· Targeting Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) programs – develop print materials, website information and audits for ICI customers, particularly schools. Target date: 2013.
The Water CEPP falls under the Council priority of promoting environmentally sustainable practices and was also a priority activity for the EAC. The City was asked to develop a plan in 2012 by the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association. The plan also helps to align the city with the provincial Water for Life strategy.
The City of St. Albert promotes numerous water conservation campaigns throughout the year, including the rain barrel program, which sold 500 barrels at a reduced cost in 2011; Good Growing Neighbours; and summer and winter water conservation tips. In 2012, a toilet rebate program was approved by Council which has been popular with residents. As of August 21, 2012, the $30,000 budget was fully allocated, and with this initiative residents reduced their water consumption by over 5,000 m³ of water.

Playing Tonight At LB's Pub
August 28
MARSHALL LAWRENCE (Guitar and vocals)
JAMES BORASKI (Guitar and vocals) and
Gator Shellamy (Guest Drummer)
Marshall - So much can be said about the "Doctor of the Blues" Marshall Lawrence. I have been watching Marshall since 2004. He brings a delta blues style to the stage with his sound, tempo, and gutsy performances. Plays to every room in the same mannerism and presence every time regardless of the size or how many people are in attendance. Marshall keeps busy on the local scene hosting a Saturday afternoon blues jam and has appeared at all the St. Albert establishments we have been involved with. A third time feature for Marshall at LB's. Marshall was nominated for the Maple Blues and Canadian independent music awards.
James - A veteran of live club performances and festivals, James has been creating, arranging and presenting live music for more than 30 years. His original songs are strongly influenced by Roots, Rock & Blues, often augmented with innovative instrumentation and they tell real-life stories of his travels across Canada. Cuts from his debut CD ‘NVR2L8’ garner regular airplay on stations in the NWT and select stations in Ontario, and he is extremely proud the album was featured at Canada's Northern House during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. James spent a considerable period of his life living and performing in the NWT, but he has performed as far away as Puerto Escondido, Mexico and St. John, USVI. He recently opened shows for CAMA Winner and JUNO Nominee - Digawolf; JUNO Winner - Leela Gilday; Maple Blues Award Nominee - Marshall Lawrence; and multi-Maple Blues and JUNO Winner - Jack de Keyzer. A particular highlight of his career was being selected to perform with his band ‘Momentary Evolution’ at the BHP Billiton - EKATI Diamond Mine in December 2010 - a performance well above the Arctic Circle and the Canadian treeline.
Gator - has always been a well known drummer and jam host in and around St. Albert since the mid seventies. Gator was born with rock'n'roll and blues drummin in his blood. Spending many years as Wayne Allchin's main stay drummer put Gator on many stages and linked him in to many bands due to his solidity behind the kit. Gator is a sought after blues rock drummer and keeps himself busy playing with The Mary Thomas Band, formerly Blue Gator, to name a few, and currently he is keeping the clock for Marshall Lawrence and rumour has it he will be joining guitarists Jim Dyck and Shaun Cooney with Bill Furher, a bassist with whom Gator has kept rythym with, for years. A great friend and a major part of the building blocks for our St. Albert jam and music scene. This show at LB’s Pub will be the culmination of a month-long tour of the NWT with his good friend and “Doctor of the Blues” – Marshall Lawrence bringing us the East Meets West Northern Blues Tour.
