Maple Flag At Cold Lake - Photos By James

A St. Albert's Place regular reader was in Cold Lake to take in the annual Maple Flag event. He wishes to be know simply as 'James', but has an obvious skill with a camera and sent us a series of photographs of various aircraft. We are presenting them a couple at a time in an ongoing series. They should be of interest to many of our military family readers.

A Toy Train In Space

We sent my son's favourite train "Stanley" to space in a weather balloon with a HD camera and an old cell phone for GPS. He was recovered 27 miles away in a corn field and we got some great footage of the trip. This video documents the journey from liftoff to landing. My 4 year old and Stanley are inseparable like Calvin and Hobbes. He's been attached to him since he was two, and they play, sleep and do everything together. I animated Stanley's face with After Effects and Photoshop to bring him to life how I imagine my son sees him.

Peter Turland

Peter
- is best known as the bassist for many rockabilly and blues bands on either side of the Atlantic ocean such as The Nervous Fellas, The Rockin' Highliners, Harpdog Brown and the Bloodhounds, The Twisters and Ray Condo and his Ricochets. Pete released "Rollin' and Tumblin' Again" (East Side Records), which brought him to the centre stage as a lead singer and guitar player. This solo CD has shown that Pete is a very multifaceted and original musician. (That means you should buy a copy of it).

Pete is always in demand as a doghouse bassist, lead guitar player, front man, and as a producer. His second solo CD entitled "Both Wheels Left the Ground" is available in stores (That means you should buy a copy of it). Pete moved to Canada from Northampton, England, in 1989 at the request of Roy Williams (Nervous Records) to record with the Canadian rockabilly band the Nervous Fellas. Since then, Pete has established himself as one of the top bass players in Canada, having been named the Best Bass player 4 times by Real Blues Magazine.

He's been the founding member of some of Canada's more recognized blues bands. Pete is currently an active member of Cousin Harley - one of Canada's premier rockabilly/ western swing bands as well as his own The Pete Turland Band. Pete has performed at pretty much every major Folk and Blues festival in Canada as well as the Hemsby Rock & Roll Weekender (England), Viva Las Vegas (USA), Calella (Spain), Mirande (France), the Lincoln Center (New York), the Hollywood Palladium, and on the CBS Good Morning show. When Pete plays the bass, the audience pays attention! His unique style is often copied by up and coming bass players who revere his talent.

His animated playing and interaction with the other musicians makes him a much sought after player. He is an accomplished front man and band leader who is highly respected by his peers. I saw Peter perform fronting the band on guitar at the first Beaumont Blues Festival. I have invited Peter in to front the house band on guitar and vocals. A first time visit to our show and we are honoured to present Peter to our fan base and jammers in St. Albert.
