The Photography Of Al Popil

Hi Don,
Starry, starry night. Went out to Fedorah Saturday night to photograph the Perseid meteor shower. Didn't get much but the northern lights were out and a very fiery red quarter moon. The moon on the left side of the church is round do to a thirty second exposure and the glow in the background on the right side is from the town of Gibbons.

Those pesky meteors are tough to shoot Al, as you know. Not sure how many times I have tried, but no luck yet.

Suing Their Tushes Off?
Don:
If you've found Libor and Euribor so murky it made your head hurt, you haven't been alone. You may find this Spiegel essay slightly more illuminating ... slightly.
Here's an excerpt to get folks' attention: "Morgan Stanley has already made its projections, estimating the total cost to the banks, including fines and damage payments, at $22 billion, of which $1.5 billion would apply to Deutsche Bank."
Elsewhere here is this fun fact. European Community law limits fines to corporations to 1/10 of their yearly profit. Now I think more, this may be the foundation of Morgan Stanley's projection: assume that every member bank is going to be fined to the max. Add up all the suspect banks' yearly profit, and divide by ten.
If so, that's probably way low, because everybody and his brother Schlomo is lining up to sue their, uh, tushes off.

Playing Tonight At LB's Pub
August 14
Real Fagnan (Guitar and vocals)
Real's uncle and later, his older sister's boyfriend were his early teachers. There were not many guitar players in the small town of St. Paul, Alberta in the late sixties, early seventies. Real started listening to everybody he could via his older brother's records (Doors, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Clapton, Blind Faith, etc.). He also started to listen to both country and blues stylists, Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, Jimmy Bryant, BB King, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Duane Allman etc., then a bit later guys like Mark Knopler, Vince Gill, Robben Ford, Lenny Breau and many others. Also listened to a lot of acoustic, country blues type stuff and ragtime music adapted from the piano to guitar. (Jimmy Van Deusen, Merle Travis, Leon Redbone, Mississippi John Hurt, etc). Real has performed with Michelle Wright, the late great Terry Carrisse, Yolanda King, the late great Colleen Peterson (Charlie Daniels, Quartette), Dave Dudley ('Six Days on the Road'), Crystal Plamondon(Cajun Queen) Jake Matthews, Samantha King, Brad Johner and multi CCMA award winner Gord Bamford. Opened for and toured with-Loretta Lynn (the Coal Miner's Daughter, Tammy Wynette, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Shenandoah, Colleen Rae and jammed at the CCMA's with none other than Mr. Keith Urban. He has done dozens of recording sessions with many artists (Crystal Plamondon, Terry Carrisse, Tyler Hamilton, Poverty Plainsmen, Ecka Janus, Danita Lynn, Wendell Ferguson at the moosehead/barsnbands open stage and co-wrote and co-produced, as well as arranged, and played guitars for the country rock stalwarts Prairie Knights with Dave Cox and Michael Cropley. Played on three different cruise lines, going all over the world as a guest entertainer and lead guitarist, vocalist, and co-fronter of many fine ship combos. Also fronted his own local project recently called I-95 with Paul Van Ramshorst, 'Big Daddy' Randy Forsberg and Jeff Liske. Real's style could be best described as country/blues and blues with jazz and rockabilly undertones! He has been singing a lot more as of late with his baritone voice. Enjoys singing classic country, blues, rockabilly and a bit of ballad crooning (Jim Reeves) as well as Tin Pan Alley swing (Frank Sinatra). Real always employs his easy going, humorous improv skills at the mic as well. We may even get an impression or two before the night is over! Nice to have Real's fire on guitar back in town and back for another feature night.
