Sunrise In Both East and West

Letter To The Editor

Reader Questions Media Election Impartiality

Editor's Note:

This accompanied the letter below. Hi Don:
Sent this to St. Albert Gazette with the comment, "Dear Sirs: I have attached a letter to the editor regarding the current election.  I trust you are open enough to print differing perspectives."

SINC SAYS:

You bet we are Lynda. It is important during a campaign to allow all sides of an issue to be published. And if anyone gives people the old 'not enough space' to run all the letters in the day of the internet when they have a website is, well, just not so. Space online has no limit. Thanks for your opinion.

vector-of-a-cartoon-blindfolded-woman-taking-impartial-notes-coloring-page-outline-by-toonaday-15653
Dear Mr. Editor:

It seems that there is a concerted campaign among those who wish the spendthrift status quo in this community to continue and to keep St. Albert as the most highly taxed city in the province. I see the collusion in the efforts to categorize those who take an opposing viewpoint as disgruntled ne'er do wells or troublemakers.  I also see it in the repeated concerted efforts to drag down hard working councillors who have the temerity to do more than rubber stamp administration proposals.

The latter point is evidenced in the editorials, articles and letters to the editor that are published in our supposedly neutral newspaper. Not a chance is missed to castigate those councillors who may have used the occasional brash word on a few isolated occasions. In most cases those councillors work doubly hard just to pry relevant information from administration. They independently collect their facts, put together and analyze data and make argument just to show that other approaches to an issue have value and are worth consideration. They get no assistance to do this. And then, at Council,  they get faced with block voting against their proposals no matter how valid and sensible. No wonder at times some incautious language is used.

Contrast this with those supporting the status quo, which mostly means an automatic approval of administration's latest position. When all you have to do is smile and say yes, and vote in favour, you are very seldom tested beyond your limits, and highly unlikely to say or do anything controversial.

To me, the fact of the minor verbal mistakes, speaks to just how hard Cam MacKay and Sheena Hughes have worked for the everyday citizen in this city, in the face of huge odds.   They have tackled tough issues including establishing an internal auditor who will help ascertain the effectiveness and efficiency of current city programs, processes and procedures and report to council.  They have proposed alternative approaches to issues such as the new branch library.  They have honoured and argued for the petition presented by almost 6900 votes in St. Albert asking for a meaningful vote on the proposed branch library.  They have supported retuning annual surpluses to the taxpayer versus being shunted to various slush funds.  I could go on, but would need a book to do so.

I am proud to say I support Mr Cam MacKay and Ms Hughes in their candidacy for Mayor and Councillor respectively.

When A Library's Not A Library

When A Library's Not A Library
A woman goes into a library and, speaking clearly and loudly, orders a burger, fries and a milkshake.

The librarian rolls his eyes and says, exasperated, "This is a library, ma'am."

So she leans in and whispers, "Sorry. I'll have a burger, fries, and a milkshake."

The lady must be a member of the YES Library Group.

Sea Creatures From Japanese Tsunami Are Just Now Arriving On Pacific Coast

Sea Creatures From Japanese
The deadly 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan were devastating to life both on land and in the ocean. Years later, we're still discovering the long-lasting effects on our environment. Case in point: Scientists recently learned the wave sent sea creatures on long ocean journeys.

According to a study published in Science, almost 300 different species of marine life, including fish, crabs and mussels have floated thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean, riding on debris such as boats, foam and even partial docks. The creatures have washed up in Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon and California, among other locations.

The Surprising Side Of Las Vegas That Few Know

The Surprising Side Of Las Vegas That Few Know
With its glitzy casinos, never-ending nightlife and tens of millions of tourists, Las Vegas looms large in the international imagination. But with just 600,000 residents, the city has a small-town side that only locals know.

“Sure, Las Vegas is a place where on a Monday afternoon you can party like it’s 1999,” said Thomas Schneider, CEO of Vegas Jets, who moved here from Toronto after a holiday. “But most people think living in Vegas means that we party every single day like the tourists, which is certainly not the case. Vegas has beautiful suburbs that are actually quite child-friendly and there are plenty of things to do away from the Las Vegas Strip like boating and hiking.”

11 Things To Know About This Year’s Harvest Moon

11 Things To Know
This year’s full moon closest to the autumnal equinox rises in all its giant, gorgeous glory on October 5, but its waxing and waning put on a good show too.

Each year as summer in the Northern Hemisphere slowly slips into autumn, we have the September and October full moons to shine their luminous light on the change of seasons. When the September full moon occurs closer to the autumnal equinox, which fell on September 22 this year, it’s called the Harvest Moon. But if the October full moon is closer to the date, she takes the title. All full moons are special, but the Harvest Moon has some unique features that make this month’s moon a marvelous must-see.

1. This year's Harvest Moon will be officially full at 2:40 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on October 5 – this is when it is directly opposite of the sun. But will appear full for a day or two before and after.

What If Dinosaurs Hadn't Died Out?

What If Dinosaurs Hadn't Died Out?
It was the kind of cataclysm that we can scarcely imagine. When an asteroid 15km-wide (nine miles) slammed into planet Earth 66 million years ago, it struck with a force equivalent to about 10 billion Hiroshima bombs. A radioactive fireball seared everything for hundreds of miles in every direction and created tsunamis that sped halfway around the globe. Even the atmosphere may have started to burn, and no land animal more than 25kg (55lb) would survive; in fact, around 75% of all species became extinct. The so-called ‘non-avian’ dinosaurs didn’t have a hope, and only the small, feathered flying dinosaurs we know today as birds would make it through.

Just as our ancestors had to deal with sabretooth cats, early humans would have had to deal with the dromaeosaurs and abelisaurs.

But what if history had taken a different course?

Is The YES Library Campaign
A Fatal Plebiscite Mistake?

The entire Lois Hole revival game is a desperate last stand by the pro library group to not only defend their position, but to use the name of a well respected deceased person to try and influence a vote to save their not needed or wanted branch library, by too many people to ignore in this community.

The majority of people against this expansion will show up at the polls because they have had enough, leaving them in a deep 'NO' hole before voting even begins.

The tactic may very well do their campaign more harm than good, as it is viewed as insulting to many who prefer a cheaper option to expand library services, many of those services far outside the normal scope of a library, and questionable when other agencies provide duplicate services and have for years.

Don New Caricature Small
The biggest loser in this whole sordid affair may be Cathy Heron, after her very public support and donation to the YES side, but that remains to be seen.

It will be a very interesting election night and a nail biter for many on both sides. One can only hope that prudent financial policy prevails.

Why So Many People Overspend On Their Holidays

Why So Many People Overspend On Their Holidays
Esta Shah always plans a fun activity for the day following her holiday. It’s not a coping strategy to combat the back-to-work blues – rather, it’s a budgeting trick she says prevents her from wild overspending.

Knowing the fun will continue when you get back “keeps you from spending on [unnecessary] things during the last days of vacation to keep the fun going,” says Shah, a marketing professor at the University of Cincinnati.

What Was That?

What Was That?
God said, "Adam, I want you to do something for Me."

Adam said, "Gladly, Lord, what do You want me to do?"

God said, "Go down into that valley."

Adam said, "What's a valley?"

God explained it to him.

Then God said, "Cross the River."

Adam said, "What's a river?"

God explained that to him, and then said, "Go over to the hill......"

Adam said, "What is a hill?"

So, God explained to Adam what a hill was.

He told Adam, "On the other side of the hill you will find a cave."

Adam said, 'What's a cave?'

After God explained, He said, "In the cave you will find a woman."

Adam said, "What's a woman?'

So God explained that to him, too. Then, God said, 'I want you to reproduce."

Adam said, "How do I do that?"

God first said (under His breath), "Geez...."

And then, just like everything else, God explained that to Adam, as well.

So, Adam goes down into the valley, across the river, and over the hill, into the cave, and finds the woman.

In about five minutes, he was back.

God, His patience wearing thin, said angrily, "What is it now?"

And Adam said .... "What's a Headache?"

This Tiny Country Feeds The World

This Tiny Country Feeds The World
In a potato field near the Netherlands’ border with Belgium, Dutch farmer Jacob van den Borne is seated in the cabin of an immense harvester before an instrument panel worthy of the starship Enterprise.

From his perch 10 feet above the ground, he’s monitoring two drones—a driverless tractor roaming the fields and a quadcopter in the air—that provide detailed readings on soil chemistry, water content, nutrients, and growth, measuring the progress of every plant down to the individual potato. Van den Borne’s production numbers testify to the power of this “precision farming,” as it’s known. The global average yield of potatoes per acre is about nine tons. Van den Borne’s fields reliably produce more than 20.

ALL THOSE GARDEN THINGS

By Don Hamaliuk

Have you seen my tomatoes, they’re the biggest I’ve ever grown
And my beans and zucchini are the tastiest I’ve ever known
Harvest time this year, is as exciting as every other
A tradition of creation, passed on from father and mother

When you plant your own garden, it’s like going to a shrink
There is therapeutic value in the things you have to think
Don’t plant it all too early, or your seeds will not come up
Don’t plant it all too late, or your harvest won’t be enough

Put your beans in front and the corn way in the back
If you hill all your potatoes, you’ll be able to fill a sack
I’m feeling so much better, when the sun is on my face
And I’m standing and admiring my beautiful garden space

When I’m picking all the ripe ones and eating just a few
I’m planning out our menu and I’ll be sharing it with you
The pride that I am feeling is the joy my garden brings
My salad so fresh and flavourful, with all those garden things

The Power Of A 'Not-To-Do-List'

The Power Of A 'Not-To-Do-List'
Has your working day become one long battle to wade through a to-do list?

The multiple distractions of the modern workplace – digital overload, open offices and constant interruptions, to name a few – can make it near impossible to achieve your goals, or even get anything done at all.

But, what if you’re going about things the wrong way? Perhaps you should be thinking more about what you shouldn’t be doing instead.
