Celebrating Canada 150 with a
Multicultural Performance on
July 9, 2017 at the Winspear Music Centre

Canada150in150-200x200
Canada 150 is an important landmark in the history of our great country. In the span of one and a half centuries, we have evolved into a nation whose greatness is not based on its military or economic might, but on our respect for human dignity, our embracement of multiculturalism and our belief in equality for all.

It is in this spirit that the Chinese Community of Edmonton is bringing together a multicultural performance to offer our audience a celebration of the colourful traditions and diversities that represent the many ethnic and cultural elements in our society. We are truly fortunate that so many ethnic groups are participating in this event and we offer them our most sincere gratitude for taking part in this unique experience.

We wish everyone in our audience a happy and successful Canada 150 year. May we all be mindful of each other’s needs, share in the blessings of this beautiful land and prosper together in harmony and peace.

Come join us celebrate Canada 150 with a Multicultural Performance that reflects our cultural diversity and heritage.

For more information, please contact the
Chinese Benevolent Association at 780-429-1914

Saturday Sessions July 8th Presents

This weeks Mark Ammar's Saturday Sessions show 679 presents guest -
Ann Vriend - can take you by surprise. At every show, people say, "I didn't expect such a big voice to come out of such a tiny frame!" Her ballads bring people to tears, but then she cracks a witty, self-effacing joke and takes off her shiny second-hand high heels to play the piano. AV sings her heart out about her views of the world; her matter-of-fact, non-sugar-coated observations from her inner city neighbourhood; her hard life lessons -- and yet there is a soulful, hopeful persistence for herself and the world to be better.

AV’s new EP Anybody’s Different has already been released to an adoring audience in Australia and three of the singles on the five-song EP have already had significant media attention. In addition to the Cobalt Prize win for "All that I Can," the Australian EP release reached #2 on their Soundslike Café national playlist, and "Will You Be There" has been added in high rotation at Quesada and z-teca burrito restaurants across Canada.

AV was also nominated for Female Artist of the Year for the 2017 Edmonton Music Awards to be announced in June. She has been supporting the new EP with a three-week tour of Western Europe in May, some festivals in June and is back in Canada for summer dates. Ann has appeared on CBC’s Vinyl Café with Stuart McLean, ABC TV’s prime time music comedy trivia show Spicks and Specks, ABC Radio’s The Inner Sleeve plus Sydney Mornings with Wendy Harmer, and Germany’s Arte TV. She has been featured in Elle Magazine and performed at Koerner Hall via the Songwriters’ Association of Canada, alongside Dan Hill, Marc Jordan, Melanie Doane, and others. So happy that Ann accepted our invite! - Mark Ammar 780-217-9787.

Oooh, Heaven Is A Place On Earth

heaven-04
Sid and Irv are business partners. They make a deal that whichever one dies first will contact the living one from the afterlife.

So Irv dies. Sid doesn’t hear from him for about a year, figures there is no afterlife. Then one day he gets a call. It’s Irv.

‘So there is an afterlife! What’s it like?’ Sid asks.

‘Well, I sleep very late. I get up, have a big breakfast. Then I have sex, lots of sex. Then I go back to sleep, but I get up for lunch, have a big lunch. Have some more sex, take a nap. Huge dinner. More sex. Go to sleep and wake up the next day.’

‘Oh, my God,’ says Sid. ‘So that’s what heaven is like?’

‘Oh no,’ says Irv. ‘I’m not in heaven. I’m a rabbit in Saskatchewan.’

128-Year-Old Man In Argentina Claims He's Adolf Hitler

128-Year-Old Man
A 128-year-old man in Argentina claims he is Adolf Hitler - and has somehow managed to hide the fact for the past 70 years.

Although it is universally accepted that the infamous Nazi warlord committed suicide in 1945, a man called Herman Guntherberg has given a rather different story to the ultra-conservative Argentine newspaper El Patriota.

Guntherberg claims he arrived in Argentina at the end of the war, with a fake passport produced by the Gestapo, and he is in fact the Fuhrer himself.

Father's Last Request

Father's Last Request
A husband and wife had four boys. The odd part of it was that the older three had red hair, light skin, and were tall, while the youngest son had black hair, dark eyes, and was short.

The father eventually took ill and was lying on his death bed when he turned to his wife and said, "Honey, before I die, be totally honest with me - is our youngest son my child?"

The wife replied, "I swear on everything that's holy that he is your son."

With that the husband passed away. The wife then muttered, "Thank God he didn't ask about the other three."

The Last Death-Defying Honey Hunter of Nepal

The Last Death-Defying
Three hundred feet in the air, Mauli Dhan dangles on a bamboo rope ladder, surveying the section of granite he must climb to reach his goal: a pulsing mass of thousands of Himalayan giant honeybees. They carpet a crescent-shaped hive stretching almost six feet below a granite overhang. The bees are guarding gallons of a sticky, reddish fluid known as mad honey, which, thanks to its hallucinogenic properties, sells on Asian black markets for $60 to $80 a pound—roughly six times the price of regular Nepali honey.

Himalayan honeybees make several types of honey depending on the season and the elevation of the flowers that produce the nectar they eat.

All of a sudden, that smile comes back to your face and you say to yourself, "Now that's a big ass balloon!"

And things don't seem quite so bad!

A Hiring Manager

A Hiring Manager
The bank manager was in the final stages of hiring a cashier and was down to two final applicants, one of which would get the job.

The first one interviewed was from a small college in upstate New York. A nice young man, but a bit timid.

Then he called for the second man, "Jim Johnson!" Up stepped a burley young man who seemed quite sure of himself. "He looks like he can take care of any situation," thought the manager, and decided, there and then, to hire him.

He turned to the first applicant and told him he could go and they would let him know.

Turning to Johnson, he said, "Now Jim, I like the way you carry yourself -- that's an important asset for the job as cashier. However, you must be precise. I noticed you did not fill out the place on the application where we asked your formal education."

Jim looked a little confused so the manager said, "Where did you get your financial education?"

"Oh," replied Jim, "Yale."

"That's very good ... excellent. You're hired!"

"Now that you're working for us, what do you prefer to be called?"

Jim answered "I don't care... Yim... or Mr. Yonson."

We May See Color So We Can Understand Each Other

We May See Color
Humans and other primates see color thanks to three different kinds of cells in the retina.

By responding differently to short-, medium- and long-wavelength light, these cells provide the information the brain needs to figure out color in the environment.

This is how we do it. It's also how the birds and the bees do it.

But it turns out that our eyes do this imperfectly.

Laboratory Chimps Caged 30 Years
Are Finally Released To A Sanctuary

Like prisoners emerging from a lifetime behind bars, a group of chimpanzees step blinking into the sunlight. This is the first time they have felt grass under their feet and breathed fresh air for 30 years. A few of the chimps were born in captivity but most were kidnapped from African jungles as babies and flown to Europe, where they were locked in metal laboratory cages to be used in a long series of experiments.

Two campers are walking through the woods when a huge brown bear suddenly appears in the clearing about 50 feet in front of them.

The bear sees the campers and begins to head toward them. The first guy drops his backpack, digs out a pair of sneakers, and frantically begins to put them on.

The second guy says, ‘What are you doing? Sneakers won’t help you outrun that bear.’

‘I don’t need to outrun the bear,’ the first guy says. ‘I just need to outrun you.’

CANNABIS VS. BEER: Which Industry Will Reign Supreme?

CANNABIS VS. BEER
Would you rather light up a joint, or drink a beer?

According to new research by the Cannabiz Consumer Group (C2G), which studied the behavior of 40 thousand participants, marijuana is “canna-balizing” the beer industry. In states where cannabis has been legalized, 27 percent of drinkers have already substituted cannabis for beer. And if marijuana were legalized nationally, C2G predicts that the beer industry could lose more than $2 billion in retail sales.

However, just because cannabis is becoming more widely accepted, there’s no evidence that alcohol is going anywhere; it’s part of our culture. That’s why some innovative companies are coming up with new ways to combine the two.

Wolf Pack Hunts A Hare - The Hunt - BBC Earth

A diet of Leverett's will not be enough to sustain a growing pup or feed an entire Wolf pack, so bigger prey is needed. The problem is bigger prey like the Hare are incredibly agile and can run up to speeds of 60 km per hour. If this Wolf pack are not going to go hungry, they will need to hunt as a unit.

Lost Dogs Return Home After Owners Cook Sausages Near Where They Went Missing

Lost Dogs Return Home
The family of a pair of handsome miniature schnauzers were distraught when they disappeared in thick fog while on a walk in the hills.

They thought they would never see Charlie and Theo again - until the pair scampered back when they smelled sizzling sausages.

Owners Liz and Graham Hampson launched a rescue campaign and contacted mountain rescue teams, friends and family.

How Politics Works

How Politics Works
I told my son, “You will marry the girl I choose."

He said, "No."

I told him, "She is Bill Gates's daughter."

He said, "Yes."

I called Bill Gates and said, "I want your daughter to marry my son."

Bill Gates said, "No."

I told Bill Gates, "My son is the C.E.O. of the World Bank."

Bill Gates said, "OK."

I called the president of World Bank and I asked him to make my son the C.E.O.

He said, "No."

I told him, "My son is Bill Gates's son-in-law."

He said, "OK."

Beer A Better Painkiller Than Acetaminophen, Study Says

Beer A Better Painkiller
(RNN) - Two or three beers may be a better painkiller than the stuff you get in the drugstore, a British study found.

And beer definitely goes better with pretzels than acetaminophen.

Researchers at Greenwich University in the U.K. say they discovered strong evidence that alcohol is an effective painkiller. They also concluded the more beer people drank, the less pain they felt.

More good news here.

>#176 HEALTHY SENIOR

By Don Hamaliuk

My mother use to feed me, to grow up big and strong
Cauliflower and broccoli, some foods that taste so wrong
I really didn’t believe, that vegetables could be so good
Especially when there was sugar, in all my favorite food

Should have listened to my mother, the words keep haunting me
One look in the mirror and it’s scary what I see
So I’m eating all my veggies and foods that are whole
My portions are no bigger, than can fit into a bowl

I bought some shoes for walking and do it every day
And moved to Arizona, for my long winter stay
If I continue on this journey, it should come as no surprise
That by the time I’m in my hundreds, I’ll be the perfect size

Our Readers Respond

Poetry Corner has apparently inspired a number of other folks to join in. Take for example this bit of fun!

Perron And St. Anne

I love this little city
St. Albert is the name
But when it comes to traffic
Patience is the game

I finally got used to the Trail
Where left turns are truly a pain
But I have to agree it is safer
Though I do so with disdain

But now I see a problem
Which needs to see a ban
What the hell goes on
At Perron and St. Anne!

You can’t turn left; You can’t turn right
Testing this patient man
When the light is showing red
At Perron and St. Anne

I sit there almost alone
And I am really not a fan
As there is almost no traffic
At Perron and St. Anne

I send an email, then I text
My long lost buddy Dan
Cause there is nothing else to do
Waiting at Perron and St. Anne

I can guess the reason
Yes I think I can
The good old Farmer’s Market
Starts at Perron and St. Anne

But at any other time
You can kick a can
Down the intersection
Of Perron and St. Anne

I hope this is a test
Which no longer will be ran
I want to turn right on a red
At Perron and St. Anne

Wonder whatzit used for?   And whatzit called?
Bixman / St. Albert

READER GUESSES:

*
A blueberry picker. - Geordie in Edmonton

*
The Whatzit pic is a stumper. I have seem similar things
used for picking blueberries, removing ticks from dogs and
used in the process of making cheese. However, I haven't
a clue as to what this is or what it is used for in
reality. -
Marc in NS

*
I'd say Marc came pretty close and could easily be used
as he suggests for picking blueberries. But in actual fact I
believe it's a type and variation of an antique wooden
Cranberry Scoop. But heck, even Lee Valley Tools sells
a modern equivalent general "Berry Scoop" these
days. -
