Smoke Here Too In Southwestern Alberta!
WatertonSmoke_1
Hi Don, Smoke is also really bad down here in Southwestern Alberta. The two images are driving towards Waterton from the east, taken yesterday afternoon. First is about 5 kilometers from the park gate, the second (below) is less than a kilometer from the Chief Mountain intersection. Just as bad Thursday in the Crowsnest pass. - Bob from Blairmore

The Rio Olympics Were Only A Year Ago

Officials in Rio de Janeiro hoped hosting the 2016 Olympics would help make it a first-class city. Instead, many buildings and stadiums made for the games have gone unused since the event ended.

St. Albert City Council Meeting, September 5, 2017

The video of this past Tuesday's St. Albert city council meeting is now available for those who may have missed it and we have embedded the video here to save them searching the city site. The meeting is quite an eye opener on many fronts including the accusation against the mayor by Stan Lozinski which takes pace early in the video. It is also significant that library head Peter Bailey does not seem to have a clear response to answer questions from members of council on the proposed branch library cost. Readers will have to sort through the video to catch the relevant portions as the agenda jumps back and forth making it difficult to follow at times.

Red Flags You're Drinking Way More Caffeine Than Your Body Can Handle

Red Flags You're Drinking
Too much caffeine can leave you feeling really weird, and while you might think of jittery hands and extreme adrenaline as obvious symptoms, copious amounts of caffeine can actually do a whole lot more to your body. Whether your drink of choice is coffee, green tea, Monster, Red Bull, all of these beverages have the potential to alter your brain chemistry, obstruct your nervous system, and affect your body in ways you'd probably never guess. So, yeah, it's kind of important to know how much caffeine you should drink.

Navajo Nations First Solar Project Now Producing

Navajo Nations First
A giant array of solar panels near the famed sandstone buttes of Monument Valley has begun producing electricity for the Navajo Nation at a time when the tribe is bracing for the loss of hundreds of jobs from the impending closure of a nearby coal-fired power plant.

The Kayenta Solar Facility is the first utility-scale solar project on the Navajo Nation, producing enough electricity to power about 13,000 Navajo homes.

The plant comes at a time when the area's energy landscape is shifting.

St. Albert City Council
Citizen Pleads With Mayor, Council
While Other Threatens Legal Action

It must have been quite a council meeting yesterday afternoon and evening, but residents were denied a live stream of the event due to technical issues. This is what greeted viewers who tried to watch city council yesterday afternoon.
Screen Shot 2017-09-05 at 4.15.47 PM
And further on being denied, residents were denied the questions to be asked in a plebiscite approved by council in a motion to create the vote made earlier this year.

It will be interesting to actually see all the action when the video becomes available in the next day or two according to the city's web site.

The meeting opened with a plea from local resident Murray Lambert to try and preserve the original questions proposed for the plebiscite by this council.

It was a sad occasion to know council rejected Lambert's plea and democracy died in St. Albert last night.

Here is the text of Lambert's presentation to council.

Council Presentation 09/05/17
(Proposed plebiscite questions amendments)

While I generally do not support governance by referendum there are times when the ‘people’ must have their say and this is definitely one of those occasions.

It seems these days that political bodies at virtually all levels of government focus much more on catering to the wants of special interest groups than meeting the needs of ordinary citizens to wit this council is certainly no exception.

During this past term the dismissiveness and condescension directed toward the electorate and its ability to make proper decisions on the part of individual councillors composing the majority ‘power group’ has been palpable.

Although the Library Borrowing petition was declared invalid on the basis of a technicality, the voices of some of 6700 signatories cannot be ignored nor muted.

After council previously approved a motion to include the triple questioned plebiscite on the fall ballot and the wording with information that it would entail, Mayor Crouse is attempting to bypass established procedure by virtue of his motion to significantly alter the wording thereby reducing it to a meaningless questionnaire.

I liken this to an ill tempered child playing with others in a sandlot game of baseball, football or whatever not liking the way that the game is going insisting that the rules be changed midstream or else he would take his ball and go home.

Mayor Crouse, the ball or for that matter the sandlot itself does not does not belong to you or anyone else on council either individually or collectively but is the rightful property of each and every citizen of our city for which you are but the stewards.

This was followed by a letter delivered to all members of council by local resident Stan Lozinski regarding an incident widely publicized on Facebook which occurred following s service for the late councillor Len Bracko on Thursday of last week. That letter is shown in this scan of a photocopy below.

Lozinski Letter

Alien Search Detects Radio Signals From Dwarf Galaxy 3B Light Years From Earth

Alien Search Detects Radio
Astronomers searching for signals from alien civilisations have detected 15 powerful, repeated radio pulses coming from a dwarf galaxy 3 billion light years away from Earth.

The source of the mysterious signals, known as fast radio bursts, is unknown. Some have proposed they could be emanating from black holes or rotating neutron stars with extremely strong magnetic fields. A more speculative possibility is that they are beacons from extraterrestrial spacecraft.

Top Brewery Road Trip, Routed Algorithmically

Top Brewery Road Trip
There are thousands of craft breweries in the United States (and the world) that make delicious beer. In 2014, the Brewer’s Association put the United States count at 3,464, with about 1,800 microbreweries and 1,400 brewpubs. BreweryDB currently lists about 4,500.

So there’s a lot of good beer out there — and yet so little time. Unless your job is to drink beer every day, visiting every brewery is probably not a practical goal to strive for. However, visiting the best breweries is something worth thinking about.

The Sunday Whatzit? Answer
WHATZIT SPET 3:17
Hmm, seems to brass, probably heavy. Whatzit?
Bixman / St. Albert

Used to be a hang-it-up Fire Extinguisher for unattended
locations like remote equipment buildings. Worked well,
but unfortunately contained a fluid called carbon
tetrachloride. Very toxic to your liver and kidneys, and
is a central nervous system depressant if inhaled.
If burned in a fire it generates phosgene gas, also deadly.
Still, they were very effective at putting out a fire in a
contained room.

collectables. Congrats to Patrick in BC for his correct guess.

Saturday Sessions September 9th Presents

This weeks Mark Ammar's Saturday Sessions Jam show #688 presents guest -
Chris Durand - Started playing guitar at about 12 years old and has been gigging since. Chris's first band was from Morinville Alberta. He also played with various other bands, musterdpunt, underground punk band and in a country rock duo called stolen pony, with Hank Verbeek. He then moved to Vancouver Island and busked on the streets forming a band called the gutter suckers, which he then changed name to the outsiders as it sounded better.

Chris has recorded tracks for various artists to many to mention without forgetting someone. He received a Rawlco radio grant to make a CD and recorded an eight song CD, hoping to get funding to make a web sight and print CDs. Chris currently is playing with Rosemarie Seiver, Dwayne Elias and Tysen Wells in a band called St Bliss and is also a regular in a band called The Bad Characters with Pascal Lecours playing French and English Music across Alberta and neighbouring provinces. Great to have Chris back! -

All About Pronunciation

Screen Shot 2017-09-03 at 4.05.06 AM
A southern gentleman went to Las Vegas. Sitting in a cocktail lounge, and sipping on some bourbon, he beckoned the waitress and said quietly, "Miss, y'all sure are a luvly, luvly lady. Can ah persuade y'all to give me a piece of aarss?"

"Wow, that's the most direct proposition I've ever had!" gasped the girl. Then she looked around the room, smiled and said, "Sure, why not? You're an attractive guy too, and it's pretty slow here right now, so why don't we just slip away up to your room?"

When they returned half an hour later, the man sat down at the same table and the waitress smiled at him and asked, "Will there be anything else?"

"Why yes, " replied the southern gentleman. "Ah sure 'preciate what y'all just did for me. It was real sweet and right neighbourly of y'all. But where ah come from in Alabama, we lahk our bourbon real cold, so ah still need a piece of aass for mah drink."

Wow! Worthy Pies You Can Do At Home

Wow! Worthy Pies
Fork “Lattice” Crust - To make this easy faux-lattice design, all you’ll need is store-bought pie crust dough and a fork! Hold the fork vertically in your hand and firmly press it into the dough. (Firm enough to leave deep grooves, but delicate enough not to cut through the dough.)

Then, hold the fork in the opposite direction (horizontally) and mark the dough to the right of your first mark. Continue this alternating pattern in a line across the dough - from left to right. Follow this pattern until you’ve marked the entire piece of pie crust dough. Use the decorative dough to top your pie!

THE REASON THAT YOU'RE YOU

By Don Hamaliuk

I’m happy to be witness; that you always find your way
And I’m glad to be a part of that, each and every day
If you change direction, I want to be there too
Where we will go from there, I haven’t got a clue

But that part’s not important, as long as we’re together
We can get through anything, through any kind of weather
Your influence in my future, is welcomed all the way
There are oh so many reasons to make me want to stay

Your imagination is so out there, your wit is out there too
Your people skills amaze me; they all want to be with you
And when we get up dancing, your moves are so refined
No matter where I lead you, you never seem to mind

When we go out walking, you never fall behind
To everyone encountered, you’re more than extra kind
My eye is on you constantly, looking for a clue
I hope to find the answer, for the reason that you’re you

The Sunday Whatzit?
WHATZIT SPET 3:17
Hmm, seems to be brass, probably heavy.  Whatzit?
Bixman / St. Albert

READER GUESSES:

*
Could the Whatzit pic be something used in a beer
micro-brewing process?
- MG in NS

* A form of fumigation device maybe.....I have seen things
like this in beer making so I can see why you guessed
that MG.
- Rps in ON

* I'd say that Rps was pretty close with his guess of "a form
of fumigation device maybe…" Those automatic pressurized
Vaporizing Liquid Hanging Fire Extinguishers were quite toxic
when they released their contents. They were often used in
small remote semi-enclosed equipment rooms in case of
equipment fires etc. and I believe the early ones used carbon
tetrachloride or worse as their extinguishing agent. We had
several hanging in a compressor room where I worked years
ago and before they were banned.

The Oldest Pair of Women's Jeans Look Like The Jeans Of Today

The Oldest Pair
The oldest known pair of women’s jeans has been recently unearthed and something about them looks extremely, distressingly familiar.

The jeans in question were acquired by Levi Strauss & Co. on Tuesday, reports Time, and were purchased from a vintage collector who found them at an estate sale. They belonged to a teacher named Viola Longacre who died at the ripe old age of 100 in 2014; according to her daughter Bette, she wore them during the summers she spent in tents and cabins in the Sierra Mountains, attending classes at what was then called Fresno State College. Similar to the Lady Levis, which were the first pair of jeans marketed specifically towards women, these jeans are thought to be from the early 1930s.

More on Jezebel.
