Fishin’ Alberta With Paul Chaisson

It’s once again severe weather season and anglers should keep their eyes on the sky. Most fishing rods built today are made of carbon fibre and graphite and are good conductors of electricity.

When trolling fish from a boat, it is easy to pick up static from the air and it grounds to the boat or body of water. If you have had a discharge of static from your rod, it's time to get off the water as conditions are building for a thunder storm.

Conditions can change quickly. During the peak season of thunderstorms, I will not venture out in a lake too far from shore. Getting off quickly saves a rough ride in the wind and rain.

Two years ago while trolling Shaw’s point for walleye, I had such an incident happen to me. I was fishing with a fly rod for walleye and the cork handle of the fly rod touched the boat and I heard a sharp snap. A short time later thunderstorm formed with strong winds.

Here is a
weather app for your cell phone.

Accuweather has good graphics over the top of Google mapping images. The doppler radar shows moving clouds and thunderstorms. The images are 15 minutes old and are generated by Environment Canada.

Here is a short video showing the power of mother nature.

No Memory Lapse

No Memory Lapse
An Indian chief is sitting under a sign stating "World's longest memory” on the sidewalk of an old western tourist town.

A young man walks up to test if this sign is true. He asks,"What did you have for breakfast 30 years ago?"

The chief says, "eggs."

The man thinks the chief could have just made that up and leaves.

Years later, the man returns with his new family and sees the same chief. Walking up to the chief, he greets him by saying, "How!"

The chief replied, "scrambled."

New Amazon Building In Seattle Will Include A Homeless Shelter

New Amazon Building
The idea of mixed-use development isn't new. But today Amazon announced that a new building it plans to construct in Seattle will feature a decidedly uncommon mix: its own high-tech offices, and a homeless shelter with space for 65 families.

The company said it will donate more than 47,000 square feet of space, or about half of the new six-story building, to Mary's Place, which operates several family shelters.

Last year, Amazon invited Mary's Place to set up a shelter inside a former Travelodge it owns. That building will be torn down, but its replacement will include a permanent shelter space with room for about 200 homeless women, children, and families.

High School Reunion
Husband takes the wife to her high school reunion.

After meeting several of her friends and former school mates, they are sitting at a table where he is yawning and overly bored.

The band cranks up and people are beginning to dance.

There's a guy on the dance floor living it large, break dancing, moon walking, back flips, buying drinks for people, the works.

Wife turns to her husband and says, "See that guy? 25 years ago he proposed to me and I turned him down.

Why Finland's 'Forest Schools' Are Great For Kids

Why Finland's 'Forest Schools'
"Go ahead," I told the little girl. "Pick up the rock, see what's underneath."

Her chubby, 4-year-old arms struggled with the unwieldy rock buried in the stream bed, likely left behind as detritus from the last ice age. She moved it to one side, keeping one sandaled foot braced against the side of the bank and the other knee-deep in water. Her eyes got big as she examined the damselfly nymphs after their nest was disturbed. She watched quietly, as they wriggled into the water and past her foot. She was too young to know that the larval form of the flying insect was what others might call "gross."

She gently rolled the rock back over the muddy bottom, gazed around at all the rocks in the upstate New York summer stream and said, "Are there nymphies under allllll the rocks?"

This wasn't school, and it wasn't Finland — it was a nature-focused summer camp in New York's Hudson Valley that I ran when I was 17. But hearing about that Nordic country's kindergarten programs, where kids spend up to 80 percent of their time outside, reminded me of my own childhood and that summer program.

More on the mother nature network.

Do You Know How To Light A Fire?

Do You Know How To Light A Fire?
Here's my guide, steeped in personal experience, to lighting a good fire that catches consistently, burns without smoking, and establishes itself quickly.

My husband is a wonderful man who can do many amazing things, but when I first met him, he could not light a decent fire. Whether it was a woodstove, fireplace, or an outdoor campfire, his fires inevitably turned into smoking heaps of partially burned sticks – and I morphed into a seething, frustrated wife who fought the urge to take over immediately and do the job right.

You see, I consider myself a fire-building expert.

Malls Are Doomed: 25% Will Be Gone In 5 Years

Malls Are Doomed
Store closings and even dead malls are nothing new, but things might be about to get a whole lot worse.

Between 20% and 25% of American malls will close within five years, according to a new report out this week from Credit Suisse. That kind of plunge would be unprecedented in the nation's history.

In 1970 there were only 300 enclosed malls in the U.S., and now there are 1,211 of them. In fact, despite the recent turbulence in the retail industry, the number of malls open has actually edged higher every year.

If the analysts at Credit Suisse are right, that trend line about to turn -- sharply -- in the other direction.

Letter To The Editor

Politicians Can Be Nasty Too

Politicians Can Be Nasty Too
Editor:

I read with interest the article in the Gazette on June 3 ('Nasty' debate tone causes concern on council').

I agree that politics seems to be getting nastier, at all levels, especially in the age of social media and trolls. Women in politics seem to be the target of some of the nastiest stuff … just ask Alison Redford or Rachel Notley.

I don't see a lot of complaining by our Premier, or really many politicians, in papers about the nasty things people call them. My guess is a thick skin is a job requirement … something to consider if anyone aspires to politics.

Saying that, there are two women on our council, but the article never mentioned our other woman councillor's opinion (Sheena Hughes). And yet she has some experience as well with nasty comments.

It was Mayor Crouse who was quoted in the Gazette (back in Nov 2014) - saying to the Gazette's editorial board that Sheena was a "do nothing, go nowhere councillor".

Seems like the nasty tone isn't just coming from the public.

K. Van Hoof
St. Albert

SINC SAYS:

Then of course there was an even more nasty tone overheard by some members of the public. It happened at a meeting at the community hall on June 25th of 2013 when much stronger language was used by the mayor. Also overlooked in that article.

Family Dog Finds Missing Cat Under Floor 2 Months After Fire

Family Dog Finds Missing Cat

(UPI) -- A Michigan family whose home was destroyed in a fire said their dog found their cat alive under the floor of the wreckage two months after the blaze.

Christine Marr said her family thought their cat, Ringer, had died in the March fire at their home near South Haven.

Marr said her dog, Chloe, also nearly perished in the fire, but was resuscitated by firefighters using an improvised oxygen mask.

She said Chloe started acting strangely when they went to visit the wreckage of the home Sunday.

Did You Know That Tomatoes Hate Cucumbers?

Did You Know That Tomatoes Hate Cucumbers?
While they might taste great together in a salad, tomato plants actually dislike growing in close proximity to any member of the curcurbit family, which includes cucumbers.

Tomatos love carrots and basil, however – so planting these together will actually make them each grow more vigorously!

Sounds hokey? The idea that some plants and plant families are “friends” with others and grow better together is called companion planting, and it’s been around since the dawn of food cultivation.

Wildwood Bronc Bustin' With Al Popil

Hi Don, Some snaps from the ranch bronc riding at the 14th annual Wildwood Bronc Bustin’ at Wildwood, Alberta, yesterday (Saturday). These are ranch hands who are at working ranches from B.C. and Alberta and have no rodeo experience at all. They are allowed either two hand or one hand on the rein. Later in the day, the pro saddle bronc took place. Loooong day, more later on the pro cowboys if you want. Off to Stony Plain today (Sunday). Al.

wildwood ranch 2017 - brad rymer - al popil
Not only did Brad Rymer get bucked off, so did his saddle.

wildwood ranch 2017 - matt robertson - al popil
It may not be pretty but ranch hand Matt Robertson hung on to score a 91 in the first go-round.

wildwood ranch 2017 - rogan nye - al popil
Ranch hand, Rogan Nye, gets stepped on and his nose also got a slight adjustment from his bronc. The cowboy wasn’t seriously hurt.

WALKING

By Don Hamaliuk

I’m much too busy walking, to come to work today
I’m looking for solutions, to help me find my way
Walking gives me strength, to carry on my day
It also gives me thought, to show me my own way

The more I walk the more I think, of what is yet to come
I can work-out all my problems, when I walk alone as one
But if I were to tackle, a tougher problem of the world
It might be quite confusing and very deeply burrowed

I would need yet another, to help me tackle that
Now two of us are walking and can really chew the fat
But some problems aren’t so simple and could use some extra help
Things like global warming and preventing global melt

So we need a lot more thinkers, while they’re on their feet
To figure out the reason, we’re creating so much heat
We’ll tweet on social media; today that’s just the norm
There’ll now be teams of walkers, talking up a storm

The solutions will be many and will fix it their own way
We just need to get them walking, for them to have their say
So if you’ve got a problem, step out for a walk
And find a willing neighbour, so you both can walk and talk

Man Receives Ticket After Hitting 88 MPH In His Delorean

Man Receives Ticket
When Spencer White’s DeLorean hit 88 mph on Highway 14, he didn’t go “Back to the Future.” Instead, he got a ticket.

When Dr. Emmett Brown’s DeLorean time machine would hit 88 mph in the 1985 movie, “Back to The Future,” the flux capacitor would be activated. The passenger inside would then travel through time.

That’s not what happened to White.

Details in The Signal.
