Return To Vimy

A young Canadian woman visits the Vimy Memorial to make a charcoal imprint of the engraved name of her great-grandfather who was lost in battle, bringing with her a notebook of sketches and diary entries that he made during months of preparation for the battle to take back Vimy Ridge. The sketches transform into colourized archive footage and take us back in time to revisit the daily lives of the soldiers of the Canadian Corps, witnessing the long and detailed preparation that lead to this legendary battle. This is the first time the NFB has colourized its own archives for a film project, shedding unprecedented light on the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) film collection.

How Is Norma?

How Is Norma?
A sweet grandmother telephoned St. Joseph 's Hospital. She timidly asked, "Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?"

The operator said, "I'll be glad to help, dear. What's the name and room number of the patient?"

The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, "Norma Findlay, Room 302."

The operator replied, "Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse's station for that room."

After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said, "I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal and her physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow."

The grandmother said, "Thank you. That's wonderful. I was so worried, God bless you for the good news."

The operator replied, "You're more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?"

The grandmother said, "No, I'm Norma Findlay in Room 302. No one tells me shit here."

Speeding Drivers Slow As They Approach Barrier In Road, Then Notice Nothing’s Blocking Them

Speeding Drivers Slow
Some painted crosswalks can be easily overlooked, which can be extremely dangerous to pedestrians.

However, a small fishing town in Ísafjörður, Iceland seems to have come up with a brilliant way around this.

They’ve created a 3D optical illusion that’s not only aesthetically pleasing but is sure to make cars come to a complete halt. They’ve painted a crosswalk that looks like floating beams.

The Karate Chop

The Karate Chop
Redneck Ray is sitting at the bar in a Houston pub, silently nursing a beer.

Suddenly a big burly man walks in and slaps Ray so hard that he falls off the stool.

“That was a karate chop from Korea,” says the big man proudly.

Ray sighs, gets up and brushes the dust off his clothes, sits down on the stool and continues to drink his beer.

Suddenly he gets hit so hard that he flies into the wall.

“That was a kung fu punch from Cambodia,” chuckles the big man.

Ray had had enough. He gets up, brushes off the dust and calmly leaves the pub. After about 30 minutes he returns, walks up behind the big guy who is now sitting at the bar, and whacks him so hard behind his ear that he blacks out.

Ray looks at the bartender and says:

“When he wakes up, tell him that was a crowbar from Home Depot.”

Mayonnaise Is Disgusting, And Science Agrees

Mayonnaise Is Disgusting
For much of the past year, I have fought a one-sided battle with a popular fast casual restaurant chain that we’ll call “Ready.” Unlike most restaurants, Ready doesn’t make sandwiches, assemble salads, or otherwise perform acts of cookery upon customer request. Instead they sell nominally healthy, whole-ingredient-based pre-made soups, salads, and sandwiches. Because I’m lazy and impatient, I’m Ready’s perfect customer and not just because Ready has a location in Popular Sciences’ building. They also have another four locations (including one that sells beer) along my commute. So you’d think that Ready sandwiches would be a regular part of my nutritional rotation. But they aren’t, because Ready’s sandwiches are disgusting.

The problem is that Ready saturates almost every sandwich with a miasma of mayonnaise. When Ready doesn’t use mayonnaise, they use a yogurt dressing which is mayonnaise for people who are ashamed that they’re eating mayonnaise. The shame is justified, the yogurt dressing is not.

The Joy Of Not Wearing A Bra

The Joy Of Not Wearing
The bra is a product sprung from a perceived necessity, and from an attempt to create necessity where there is none or very little.

Late one morning, in a house in Peru’s Sacred Valley, my friend Louisa asked me why I wore a bra. We were standing in our rented kitchen, boiling water for tea. I had on, below my T-shirt, a specialty underwire brassiere with the adjustable straps drawn tight and two full DDD cups. She was in a formless gray sweatshirt, with nothing underneath. “Because I have to,” I said, laughing a little, because she’d framed it as a choice. “My boobs are massive!” She said, “So are mine.” Then she lifted her shirt to show me, and she was right: her breasts were huge, hovering there like two pale buoys. I’d never noticed.

Want Successful Kids? Let Them Play

Want Successful Kids?
Overprotective parenting is destroying kids' chances at success in life.

Lenore Skenazy has done it again. The founder of the Free Range Kids blog has written yet another brilliantly scathing critique of modern parenting, in which she links hyper-protective parenting to the overly-fragile young people now venturing into the world, incapable of handling themselves, navigating relationships, and meeting basic adult milestones.

College students are showing "a decline in resilience," and calling emergency counselling services twice as much in the past five years, often for reasons as questionable as finding a mouse in their dorm room (and needing police to set a trap) and having an argument with a roommate. While Skenazy is clear that breaking down the stigma associated with mental health is a good thing, it's problematic that lacking basic 'adulting' skills is so accepted. This is something of which young people should not be proud.

New Council To
Plebiscite Voters:
FU, We're Gonna
Build A Library!

There is no way to put this to you gently folks. Your new council clearly said 'Forget Us' if you expected a council who would honour your wishes. Citizens who said no to any library expansion in the recent election plebiscite mean nothing to this group. As rookie councillor Joly put it, the wishes of the 38 percent who voted yes deserve to be heard. Huh? What about the 62 percent who voted NO?

Five members of our new council don't like the plebiscite result and we want to forge ahead with planning for a new branch library as they rejected a motion by councillor Sheena Hughes to rescind the borrowing bylaw and drop all planning for the $21.9 million branch library.

The plebiscite wording was very clear.
Stop. All. Planning. Period.

Yet councillors
Broadhed, Hansen, Joly, and MacKay, along with mayor Heron openly defied your wishes and will continue to plan for some form of new library.

Thus sets the stage for yet another four years of a council who have no regard for our opinion. They will continue to tell us that we don't know what we voted for, we aren't knowledgable enough to make an informed decision and any other bull they could dream up to kick us square in the privates with their decision.

And all this in spite of a presentation by local resident Frank Vagi that the information the previous council received about library usage was tainted and incorrect. Membership numbers claimed to have increased by 300 percent by the library board, have actually fallen by 50 percent and St. Albert leads the province in dropping library use.

Democracy is dead in St. Albert and there ought to be a revolt.

Spend Time With People, Not with Devices

Spend Time With People
I had spent a half hour in the bank with my dad, as he had to transfer some money. I couldn't resist myself and asked, ''Dad, why don't we activate your internet banking?

''Why would I do that?'' he asked.

''Well, then you wont have to spend time here for things like a transfer. You can even do your shopping online, everything will be so easy! I was so excited about initiating him into the world of Net banking.

He said, ''If I do that, I won’t have to step out of the house.

''Yes, yes''! I said, I told him how even groceries can be delivered at your door now, and how Amazon delivers everything.

His answer left me tongue-tied, he said: ''Since I entered this bank today, I met four of my friends, I have chatted a while with the staff who know me very well by now. You know I’m alone. This is the
company that I need. I like to get ready and come to the bank, I have enough time and it is the 'physical touch' that I crave. Two years back when I got sick, the store owner from whom I buy fruit, came to see me and sat by my bedside and cried. When your Mom fell down few years ago while on her morning walk, our local grocer saw her and immediately got his car to rush her home as he knows where I live.

Would I have that 'human' touch if everything became online? Why would I want everything delivered to me and force me to interact with just my computer? I like to know the person that I'm dealing with and not just the 'seller'. It creates bonds and relationships. Does online deliver all this as well?

Technology isn't Life.

'The Coffin Club' Faces Death With A Song

'The Coffin Club'
In New Zealand, seniors are taking death into their own hands, meeting once a week to build and decorate their own coffins. It may sound macabre. It certainly doesn't seem like fodder for a film, and it definitely can't be the makings of a charming song-and-dance musical.

But for Kiwi film director Briar March that’s exactly what came to mind when she first learned about a growing number of aging New Zealanders who are joining coffin clubs in an effort to stare down death while having fun. Her new docu-musical, "The Coffin Club" (watch it below), puts a "celebratory spin" on this oddly heartening hobby sweeping her country.

Oddities To Ponder

Oddities To Ponder
The moon moves about two inches away from the Earth each year.

The Earth gets 100 tons heavier every day due to falling space dust.

Due to earth's gravity it is impossible for mountains to be higher than 15,000 meters.

Bear In Myanmar Has Giant Tongue Removed By Team Of Vets

Bear In Myanmar
A bear had emergency surgery to remove its tongue after it became so heavy that it lolled out of his mouth and dragged along the floor.

Vets believe that the bizarre swelling, which weighed 3kg (6.5lb), was without precedent.

“I’ve worked with bears for over 10 years and I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Heather Bacon from the University of Edinburgh’s royal school of veterinary studies. “It’s pretty astonishing.”

NOT ALL OF THEM SURVIVED

By Don Hamaliuk

They fought for us so fiercely; not all of them survived
In the trenches of a far off land, longingly deprived
Intentions were so noble, to fight for a good cause
Not thinking of a selfish thought, or anyone’s applause

I am thankful for their efforts, although I’m not so sure
How someone fighting someone else, is any kind of cure
It seems so very simple, that we should all just get along
And when will we finally realize, that fighting is so wrong

This thought is not so different, it’s all been thought before
By those that were left behind and those that went to war
I feel for all the families, of loved ones that were lost
The price they paid for freedom, was such a heavy cost

I am so very hopeful, but I can’t help feeling sad
I want the wars to end and it makes me feel so mad
But today I am so grateful, for sacrifices that were made
And thankful I can live my life, without being too afraid

READER GUESSES:

*
A long eared Jerboa ( Kangaroo Rat) - Geordie in Edmonton

* I'll say that little Whatzit? critter has to be: A Macrotis, or Bilbie,
or rabbit-bandicoot. Same animal but just different names it
seems. -
Patrick in BC

* A rabbit-bandicoot was what I was going to post, but I knew it
to be correct at 6 AM since my son did a project on this
endangered creature ... and wanted one for Christmas.
I figured I had the early morning advantage so I let it go to others.
Good speculation, Patrick. Kudos. -

Paying Attention

Paying Attention
Two bored casino dealers are waiting at the crap table.

A very attractive blonde woman arrived and bet twenty thousand dollars on a single roll of the dice. She said, "I hope you don't mind, but I feel much luckier when I'm completely nude."

With that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and yelled, "Come on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!" As the dice came to a stop she jumped up and down and squealed ... "YES! YES! I WON, I WON!"

She hugged each of the dealers and then picked up her winnings and her clothes and quickly departed.

The dealers stared at each other dumbfounded. Finally, one of them asked, "What did she roll?" The other answered, "I don't know - I thought you were watching."

Four Ways That Falling Back From Daylight Saving Time Can Kill You

Four Ways That Falling Back
We go through this ridiculous change for no good reason at all, yet it is unhealthy and dangerous.

For years I have been railing on about why we still have Railway Time, our time zone system developed for the convenience of those who wrote train schedules and then TV guides. Twice a year I complain about War Time, the Daylight Saving Time developed in the First World War to save coal and keep people working in the factories longer.

Except the war is over and we now have air conditioning and artificial lighting, so it doesn't actually save any energy at all. And now, there is a lot of evidence that these time changes are really bad for your health.

The fall back switch, where we get an extra hour of sleep, is far less disruptive than the spring forward, but it still is problematic.
