Saturday Sessions August 12th Presents

This weeks Mark Ammar's Saturday Sessions show 684 presents guest - Steve Boddington - a repeat back by popular demand show- a legendary Edmonton guitarist, who was born in England, Boddington has lived in Edmonton since 1960. He first started his musical career as a drummer with Wally Curtis and the Shades (1965), switched to guitar shortly after and never looked back. Influenced by heavies such as British blues guitarists Eric Clapton and Peter Green, he started the band Cat’s Squirrel and performed with numerous recording artists.

Possibly his biggest claim to fame happened in 1971 when he formed Hot Cottage, one of the longest playing and most in-demand blues/rock bands in Alberta. Steve was also guitarist in a band that opened for Cream in Edmonton in the late 60's and ended up hanging out on the town with a very young Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce after the show.“Steve’s blues rock tone and guitar style is amazing and has one of the tastiest aggressive bites to it,” says host Mark Ammar.

The Big Switch

The Big Switch
After 10 years, the wife starts to think their kid looks kind of strange. So she decides to do a DNA test. She finds out that the kid is actually from completely different parents.

Wife: "Honey, I have something very serious to tell you."

Husband: "What’s up?"

Wife: "According to the DNA test results, this is not our kid."

Husband: "Well you don’t remember, do you? When we were leaving the hospital, we noticed that our baby had pooped. You said: Please go change the baby, I’ll wait for you here."

Mammoth Uncovered On Eastern Montana Cattle Ranch

Mammoth Uncovered
Lee Randall had unearthed the bones of dead bison on his property before, but nothing this big.

Last weekend, Randall announced he and a crew of paleontologists had excavated a Columbian mammoth, estimated between 20,000 and 10,000 years old, from the banks of the Powder River meandering through his property near Broadus. Today, experts hope the remains can help tell the story of how the animals lived and died.

Eventually finding the tusks and skull largely intact, and the animal's molars captured in the process of revolving a new set, Randall said he was awestruck.

What's In Your Garage?

Local resident Gord Charters is a well know pinstriper in collector car circles.

He apparently got an unusual request to have a casket pinstriped and it was delivered to his home for, shall we say, the final touches?

Gord wrote on Facebook, "How to attract attention in a suburban neighbourhood. Have a casket delivered by a hearse. Spend the day pinstriping it with the garage door open and zztop blasting from your classic car's stereo."

Gord continued, "A LOT of neighbours slowing down and staring. One asked "WHERE IS MEL??" I just turned to the casket and finger to lips, Shhhhhhhhh." (Mel is Gord's wife.)

Phyllis Diller's Take On Life
Whatever you may look like, marry a man your own age. As your beauty fades, so will his eyesight.

Housework can't kill you, but why take a chance?

Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing up is like shovelling the sidewalk before it stops snowing.

The reason women don't play football is because 11 of them would never wear the same outfit in public.

Best way to get rid of kitchen odours: Eat out.

Has The True Identity Of Jack The Ripper Been Revealed?

It remains one of the most enduring mysteries in British criminal history with a long list of potential suspects.

But the true identity of Jack the Ripper may have finally been confirmed, after researchers said they had proven the authenticity of a much disputed Victorian diary.

Twenty five years ago 'Ripperologists' around the world were stunned by the discovery of a previously unknown memoir, claiming to have been written by Liverpool cotton merchant, James Maybrick.

Legends and mysteries attached to this place are both creepy and fascinating at the same time. One tragic event happened in 1955 when a group a friends decided to take a quick swim and dive in it's warm waters, 2 of the friends never came back up, a search team was quickly dispatched to try and find the boys, the rescue divers went as deep as 315 feet but all they managed to find were the boys snorkels and a fading flashlight that belonged to the swimmers. The bodies were never recovered and they were never seen again.

Sperm Count Drop 'Could Make Humans Extinct'

Sperm Count Drop
Humans could become extinct if sperm counts in men continue to fall at current rates, a doctor has warned.

Researchers assessing the results of nearly 200 studies say sperm counts among men from North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, seem to have halved in less than 40 years.

Some experts are sceptical of the Human Reproduction Update findings.

But lead researcher Dr Hagai Levine said he was "very worried" about what might happen in the future.

A Healing Garden Sets An Example

028EEAFE-E469-4D0C-B783-F1D732BAEC6C
While on a recent trip, I stumbled across a healing garden and St. Albert could learn a lesson or two from the Six Nations people who built it in the town of Battleford, Saskatchewan.

It is located on top of a hill with a full view of the North Saskatchewan river valley and has many individual gardens that comprise the entire site.

It is spiritual and beautiful as a garden should be, and by the look of it, built entirely by volunteers with the support of the community with very little money involved. Note the many signs of sponsors names posted in a simple and down to earth manner.

It is a shining example of what a community can do, and do it better, unlike the hundreds of thousands spent in St. Albert on something far less impressive. This garden holds none of the trappings of modern society that intrude on indigenous culture.

A bonus is that the garden produces food for the peoples who tend it. A healing garden that sets an example for others to follow.

A Wedding Story

A Wedding Story
At a wedding ceremony, the pastor asked if anyone had anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom. It was their time to stand up and talk or forever hold their peace.

The moment of utter silence was broken by a young beautiful woman carrying an infant. She started walking toward the pastor slowly.

Everything quickly turned to chaos. The bride slapped the groom. The groom's mother fainted. The groomsmen started giving each other looks and wondering how best to help save the situation.

The pastor asked the woman, "Can you tell us why you came forward? What do you have to say?"

The woman replied, "We can't hear in the back."

How One Man Built A $51M Theme Park For His Daughter

How One Man Built
A father from Texas realised there were no theme parks where his disabled daughter could play. So he decided to build one.

Gordon Hartman had just got out of the swimming pool on a family holiday, when his 12-year-old daughter Morgan went up to some children playing in the water. She tried to make friends with them but they quickly left the pool.

Hartman thinks they shied away from her because they didn't know how to react to someone with a disability - Morgan has the cognitive understanding of a five-year-old as well as a form of autism.

The incident played on his mind.

Stone Is Candidate For City Council

20620917_333520973757594_4876009519015401596_n
I am happy to announce my candidacy to faithfully serve you as a Councillor on the next St. Albert City Council.

As a St. Albert citizen for thirty seven years, I recognize that we have a lively community passion for good governance and fairness for all. I believe our Council has to be committed and dedicated to chart a course of Right Reason followed by Right Action.

Here are some areas where restoration is needed which, as a City Councillor, I will pursue:
Community Values:
* I believe in proper representation of people. Councillors are here to serve you, not the other way around.
* Our City’s slogan, Cultivate Life represents for me, the nurturing and healthy growth of the community, rooted in a secure and stable environment. This is my guiding principle.
* Taxpayers must have a voice in how tax dollars are spent. Vital questions need to be included on election ballots.
* Preserve and protect park space and greenspaces

Responsible Spending:
* Improve the budgeting process. Expenditures must be explained and justified for each new period, starting from a ‘zero base’, rather than only requiring justification for adding to actual results from the preceding years.
* Every function within the City must be analyzed for necessity and cost. Develop an employee initiative bonus for identifying and effecting operating cost savings.
* Identify reasonable and valid business objectives
* Review planned, expected and actual performance levels and set right priorities.

Professional Planning:
* Manage change through growth while preserving the integrity of neighbourhoods and respecting residential rezoning concerns.
* Establish long-range development goals to support anticipated community values and needs. This will eliminate costly patchwork fixes resulting from ‘kneejerk’ planning.
* Develop and follow-through with a concrete commitment to celebrate and honour our origins by preserving our local landmarks.
* Advocate for the twinning of Ray Gibbon Drive and completing its connection to Highway 2.

What are the credentials I have to serve you?

I have a life-long passion for serving others with many years of the right professional mix of business, financial and practical experience in working with a wide spectrum of people of many professions. Currently, I am a Director of a successful St. Albert company which I founded thirty two years ago, serving our customers and employees in St. Albert and the Capital Region.

Prior to this, I held the position of Regional Manager – Western Canada, for a large international company supplying process controls to a wide spectrum of industrial plants. Before that, I worked with the Royal Bank as a Branch Accountant.

My wife Marilyn and I are blessed with 46 years of marriage, three children and nine grandchildren.
We are members of Holy Family Parish where I volunteer on the RCIA Team. I am also a volunteer mentor with St. Albert Sidekicks.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 780-257-1775 or
email me.

Borneo’s Orangutan Population Has Shrunk By A Quarter In The Last Decade

Borneo’s Orangutan Population
The orangutan population on the island of Borneo has shrunk by a quarter in the last decade, researchers said Friday, urging a rethink of strategies to protect the critically-endangered great ape.

The first-ever analysis of long-term orangutan population trends revealed a worrying decline, they said.

An international team of researchers used a combination of helicopter and ground surveys, interviews with local communities, and modeling techniques to draw a picture of change over the past ten years.

Previous counts have largely relied on estimations based on ground and aerial surveys of orangutan nests. Some suggested that Bornean orangutan numbers were in fact increasing.

A LITTLE BIT OF SHAME

By Don Hamaliuk

Hey you; stuck on the street, with not a care in the world
Your hair all in knots and your nails long and curled
I have pity for you and a little bit of shame
So busy with my life, I don’t even know your name

If you ask me for change, I might pull out my money
I’ll hand over so little, it’s not even funny
I am so healthy and strong and successful today
I wonder what it’d take, for me to be your way

If you were my child, so lonely and hopeless
I would do all I could, to get you out from that mess
But my children are successful and I’m doing just fine
I guess I don’t have to worry, if the worry’s not mine……

God's Light

God's Light
A 90-year-old man goes for a physical and all of his tests come back normal.

The doctor says, “Larry, everything looks great. How are you doing mentally and emotionally? Are you at peace with God?”

Larry replies, “God and I are tight. He knows I have poor eyesight, so He’s fixed it so when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, poof! The light goes on. When I’m done, poof! The light goes off.”

“Wow, that’s incredible,” the doctor says.

A little later in the day, the doctor calls Larry’s wife. “Bonnie,” he says, “Larry is doing fine! But I had to call you because I’m in awe of his relationship with God. Is it true that he gets up during the night, and poof, the light goes on in the bathroom, and when he’s done, poof, the light goes off?”

“Oh sweet Jesus”, exclaims Bonnie. “He’s peeing in the fridge again!”

Regular Alcohol Consumption Could Cut Diabetes Risk, Study Finds

Regular Alcohol Consumption
Regularly drinking a moderate amount of certain alcoholic drinks could reduce a person’s chances of developing diabetes, according to a study.

Consuming alcohol three or four days a week was associated with a reduced risk of developing diabetes – a 27% reduction in men and a 32% reduction in women – compared with abstaining, scientists found.

Wine was considered particularly beneficial, probably because it has chemical compounds that improve blood sugar balance, researchers in Denmark found.
