Agency Approves Tunnel Under Stonehenge

Agency Approves Tunnel Under Stonehenge
For the first time in more than a century, the enigmatic monument of Stonehenge may soon loom large over a sweeping English countryside devoid of roads and vehicles.

The U.K. government's Highways England agency has given approval to route the A303 expressway, which passes extremely close to the prehistoric icon, through a 1.8 mile-long tunnel under the Stonehenge World Heritage Site. The $2 billion-project would significantly reduce the traffic congestion that has increasingly become a modern eyesore in front of the idyllic landmark.

Richard writes: I was going through some old negatives and came across this image from 1975 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I remember that I was new to film photography and had accidentally opened the back of the camera after taking 24 pictures. I closed the camera back quickly and developed the film a few days later. Only one picture was not completely ruined, shown below. The weird thing is that I don't remember the youngster being in the car when I took the photograph. - Richard Wear, St. Albert

It's Only A Game

It's Only A Game
A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer. “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it you.”

The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?”

The boy takes the quarters and leaves.

“What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!”

Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. “Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?”

The boy licked his cone and replied, “Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!”

What Everyone Gets Wrong With 'Millennial Snowflakes"

What Everyone Gets Wrong
I know the ultimate millennial. She owns a bicycle in lieu of a car, goes to yoga class at least twice a week, grows her own bean sprouts and works side-gigs instead of for a full-time employer – she left a budding career as an economist to pursue her dream of being a comedian.

The problem is, she's not a millennial. She’s a baby boomer in her late 50s.

Millennials are the generation that’s fun to hate
It’s true that each generation is shaped by demographics, historic events and economic forces. Like, of course, the Great Recession: worldwide, young adults now earn up to 20% below their average compatriot; 30 years ago, they earned more.

One Last Kick At The Cat

angif-kick-at-the-cat-def
Editor;

Over the past four years I have submitted numerous letters to the editor, posted comments on local websites and blogs and made oral presentations at city council all the while centering on perceived deficiencies within our local government.

In the process, I have been very critical of Mayor Nolan Crouse, sitting councillors; Wes Brodhead, Cathy Heron, and Tim Osborne, former councillor Gilles Prefontaine and our since removed city manager, Patrick Draper. Their collaboration and frequently questionable practices have allowed these individuals to hold sway over city business through predetermined group thinking and carefully orchestrated block voting.

If you don’t believe me take some time to peruse the video archives on the city website and see for yourselves. While you are at it you will also witness the due diligence and relentless efforts of councillors; Sheena Hughes, Cam MacKay and since the by-election, Bob Russell. The differences in the degree of preparation and quality of debate brought to the table by the latter group clearly stand out. After all, why would the members of what I call the power group need to invest any more time or energy than absolutely necessary knowing that the outcome will be in their favour via a customary 5 to 2 or somewhat later
4 to 3 vote.

Time and again these minority individuals who have been vehemently demeaned by their self righteously indignant detractors, have figuratively ‘flailed themselves against the ramparts of the castle’ despite its futility in the simple attempt to better represent and defend the best interests of the average citizens of St. Albert. Meanwhile, in defiance of their sworn duty to exercise due diligence in providing for the welfare of the general populace, the power group concentrated on advancing their own self-interests, satisfying the wants of special interest groups, and acceding to the demands of developers. This situation might best be described as idealism versus pragmatism.

Simply put, should Cathy Heron succeed in becoming our next mayor, little or no change from the status quo can be expected for more than any of the others she has danced to the tune of her master and mentor the mayor, whose actions have more often than they should been, subject to question although seemingly impervious to proper scrutiny and subsequent consequences.

In the election advertisements extolling her accomplishments Cathy Heron emphasizes serving on more committees, commissions and other organizations than any other member of council. I suppose in itself this is noteworthy, but simply sitting on such bodies does not necessarily equate to having made meaningful contributions. I must add that as a perk or bonus she has managed to accrue sizeable sums from the per diems that come with attending these meetings something which she unsuccessfully argued to retain when council approved a revised council compensation package.

On the matter of her involvement, along with Wes Brodhead, within the regional authority she makes grandiose claims to have made great strides in securing future benefits for St. Albert, to wit I suggest you talk to the good folks of the town of Beaumont who were recently bludgeoned into submission through the veto power of the City of Edmonton over their annexation plans.

Contrary to the above, Cam Mackay has true to form avoided glitzy showmanship and ‘smoke and mirrors’ in offering a sensible and realistic fact based platform designed to benefit all of the citizens of St. Albert. I firmly trust that a majority of discerning voters will agree with that observation come election day.

In closing, it is undeniable that there has been undesired partisanship and significant discord within our city council resulting in dysfunction. In examining cause and effect and knowing the facts it is evident that much, if not most of the problem can justifiably be attributed to Mayor Nolan Crouse himself.

How Flying Seriously Messes With Your Mind

How Flying Seriously Messes With Your Mind
With the tiny screen bouncing around in front of us, tinny sound quality and frequent interruptions, watching a movie during a flight is hardly an immersive experience.

Yet, frequent fliers may have found themselves – or at least witnessed others – welling up at the most innocuous of films while on a long airline journey. Even lighthearted comedies such as Bee Movie, Bridesmaids and The Simpsons can trigger the water works in passengers who would normally remain dry-eyed if watching these on the ground.

Bombshell Report Exposè

Document May Scuttle
St. Albert Library Vote

plebiscite
Has a new report by local retired engineer Frank Vagi, handed to the city of St. Albert on Monday October 9, 2017 called into question the very integrity of the data provided to St. Albert City Council?

It seems to show that much of the data used by the Pro-Library Group has been 'fudged'. Serious doubt is now cast not only on the branch library proposal, but on the integrity of the data itself.

As long suspected by many who claim the library is neither overcrowded or used to the maximum, the report shines a light on a library that should have any reasonable voter rethinking a yes vote to any library expansion on their ballots on Monday.

It should also cast grave concern upon candidate for mayor Cathy Heron, who tossed in $1,000 to back the group's campaign.

Download the entire report here.

Here is a quick look at the first three pages of the report.

The library expansion may now be officially dead, days before the Pro-Library group's dream of a new branch library is included in a non binding plebiscite on Monday's ballot. This document may scuttle any library expansion altogether.

Dan has worked diligently since the day I met him at the Blues on Whyte in the mid 2000's and his hard work has definitely payed off for himself and his band mates as they've gained high recognition from fans across Canada, numerous Blues societies, The Memphis Blues Challenge and The Maple Blues Awards just to name a few.

He also co-hosts a well established weekly open stage in Edmonton. I have featured Dan numerous times and we're always happy to have him back. -

The Big Decision

The Big Decision
An engaged man asked his father for advice for a long and happy marriage.

Dad, you and Mom have been happily married for 28 years now. How do you do it?

"That's easy son, when your Mom and I first got married, we made a deal. She would make all the little decisions, and I would make all the big decisions."

"Hey, that sounds like a good arrangement. But how do you decide what's a big decision, and what's a little decision?"

"Oh, there hasn't been any big decisions yet."

Magnificent White Humpback Whale Filmed Off Coast Of Australia

Magnificent White Humpback
Call me Ishmael? Fortunately for Migaloo, the only people obsessed with this great white humpback are his admirers. Named after the Aboriginal word for "white man," Migaloo has gained notoriety as one of only a very few snowy whales known to humankind – and the beloved wild whale was spotted again last week off the coast near Sydney to the utter delight of whale watchers. He is pictured above from a sighting a few years ago; recent video below.

Estimated to be around 31 years old, the wan whale is either leucistic – like the white giraffes seen recently in Kenya – or a true albino, meaning that he us unable to produce pigment at all.

More plus video on treehugger.

Oddities To Ponder

Oddities To Ponder
The roar that we hear when we place a seashell next to our ear is not the ocean, but rather the sound of blood surging through the veins in the ear.

Nine out of every 10 living things live in the ocean.

The banana cannot reproduce itself. It can be propagated only by the hand of man.

How Spam Became One Of The Most Iconic American Brands Of All Time

How Spam Became
While you might think of Spam as a basic canned meat, it’s actually one of the greatest business success stories of all time: Since Hormel Foods Corporation launched the affordable, canned pork product in 1937, it’s sold over eight billion cans in 44 countries around the world.

On July 5, Spam celebrated its 80th anniversary. It’s fitting that this comes only a day after the birthday of the United States. The product is up there with Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Pizza Hut as one of the most distinctive American brands of all time.

As a consumer behavior researcher, I believe Spam’s widespread success can be attributed to two factors: it addressed a real need, and also formed an emotional connection with its consumers, by tapping into American ideals like ingenuity and resourcefulness.

A COWBOY HAS A HAT ON

By Don Hamaliuk

A cowboy has a hat on, or a ring around his head
The way he roams and hobbles, it seems he’s nearly dead
And don’t go trying to rile him, about the way he cooks
Those beans are good for 14 days, no matter how it looks

His snuffbox may be showing, on a pocket of his shirt
It may be copenhagen and taste like flavored dirt
But the taste of it’s addictive and part of cowboy life
And may be another reason, he doesn’t kiss his wife

He understands his horses and the cows he calls by name
And the 7 second bull ride, is his favorite cowboy game
His name may not be common, like George or Don or William
But a real authentic cowboy would be Chester, Matt or Dylan

His life is plain and simple and he don’t take no guff
Has no use for politicians and will always call their bluff
Cowboys are a lonely bunch and known for their persistence
If you see him struggling some, you’d better keep your distance

Dadbag, A Fanny Pack That Will Give You An Instant 'Dad Bod'

Dadbag, A Fanny Pack
This is the Dadbag. It's a fanny pack that looks like a guy's belly.*

On Bored Panda, its designer, Albert Pukies of London, shares:

I made the dadbag because I’m desperate to have dad bod but I’m also very concerned about the health risks associated with it. The solution is quite simple, a bumbag with a proper dad belly printed on it.
