Saturday Sessions April 15th Presents

This weeks April 15th Mark Ammar's Saturday Sessions show 667 presents guest - Steve Boddington - a legendary Edmonton guitarist, who was born in England, Boddington has lived in Edmonton since 1960. He first started his musical career as a drummer with Wally Curtis and the Shades (1965), switched to guitar shortly after and never looked back. Influenced by heavies such as British blues guitarists Eric Clapton and Peter Green, he started the band Cat’s Squirrel and performed with numerous recording artists.

Possibly his biggest claim to fame happened in 1971 when he formed Hot Cottage, one of the longest playing and most in-demand blues/rock bands in Alberta. Steve was also guitarist in a band that opened for Cream in Edmonton in the late 60's and ended up hanging out on the town with a very young Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce after the show.“Steve’s blues rock tone and guitar style is amazing and has one of the tastiest aggressive bites to it,” says host
Mark Ammar - 780-217-9787.

The Psychiatrist And The Proctologist

The Psychiatrist And The Proctologist
Best friends graduated from medical school at the same time and decided that in spite of two different specialties, they would open a practice together to share office space and personnel.

Dr. Smith was the psychiatrist and Dr. Jones was the proctologist; they put up a sign reading: Dr. Smith and Dr. Jones: Hysterias and Posteriors. The town council was livid and insisted they change it.

The docs changed it to read: Schizoids and Hemorrhoids. This was also not acceptable so they again changed the sign to read Catatonics and High Colonics - no go.

Next they tried Manic Depressives and Anal Retentives – thumbs down again.

Then came Minds and Behinds - still no good. Another attempt resulted in Lost Souls and Butt Holes - unacceptable again!

So they tried Nuts and Butts - no way. Freaks and Cheeks - still no good. Loons and Moons – forget it. Almost at their wit's end, the docs finally came up with:

Dr. Smith and Dr. Jones - Specializing in Odds and Ends.

Everybody loved it.

DNA Tests Prove Retired Postman Has Over 1,300 Illegimitate Children

DNA Tests Prove
Nashville, TN | An 87-year-old former postman has been proven to have fathered over 1,300 illegitimate children after a private investigator hired by a Tennessee family discovered the shocking truth.

The investigation that has gathered thousands of DNA samples and testimonies over a 15-year period ultimately proves the man is the father to literally thousands of illegitimate children in the region.

“Contraception wasn’t very popular in those days,” he told local reporters in his defense. “I have nothing to be ashamed of. The 60s were the good old days and I did a great Johnny Cash impression which played out real good with the ladies,” he explained. “Some even thought I was Johnny Cash for real,” he recalls laughingly. “I don’t know if they really believed it or if they were trying to convince themselves, but who was I to say no to a quickie?” he acknowledged.

6 Ways In Which Parents Hinder Kids' Playtime

6 Ways In Which
Play is so crucial for children, and yet overzealous parents have a horrible habit of ruining it.

Raising kids is hard and you’ll make a lot of mistakes along the way, but please don’t screw up playtime. Play is everything to children. It’s the way they learn to manipulate objects, resolve conflict, negotiate differences, use their imaginations, and relax. Play is crucial to a child’s wellbeing, and yet it’s frequently inhibited by overzealous parents who make the erroneous assumption that more structure is better, while the opposite is, in fact, true. The key to successful playtime is letting go.

Here are some common ways in which parents ruin play for their kids, and that every parent should watch out for.

How About A Bath Instead Of A Workout?

How About A Bath
Cassandra, the beloved protagonist of the classic 1948 coming-of-age novel, "I Capture the Castle" writes: "Noble deeds and hot baths are the best cures for depression." While most doctors wouldn't go that far, an hour-long bath has benefits that go way beyond the relaxation and stress reduction most of us are familiar with.

According to a recent study from the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine at Loughborough University in the U.K., “An hour-long hot bath can boost metabolic health and cause an anti-inflammatory response similar to exercise.”

Egregious Easter Biohazard:

‘Phantom FOG Blobbers’ Cost Taxpayers Money

Egregious Easter Biohazard

FluksAqua Wages Campaign Against ‘Flushing Fat’ after Easter Dinner

Toronto, ON, April 11, 2017 - As Canadian families come together to celebrate Easter weekend with massive traditional meals, there’s an inevitable crisis looming. Kitchen drains and toilets across the nation will soon become filled with fat, oil and grease (FOG) from turkey, ham, bacon and all the trimmings.

While flushing grease down toilets and sinks seems to be the easiest way to dispose of the liquid waste, Canadians need to consider what happens as the waste builds up in the sewer system especially over a major holiday weekend like Easter.

“Individuals may think it is not a big deal but multiple households pouring grease down the drain can clog the water infrastructure costing a water utility thousands of dollars which gets paid out of your tax dollars,” said Dr. Hubert Colas, President Americas,
FluksAqua. “For all of the hard working water operators across Canada and responsible Canadians, we’re calling on these ‘Phantom FOG Blobbers’ to do the right thing and dispose of their fat oil and grease properly through their local garbage and recycling systems.”

What is the real cost of FOG in Canadian Water Systems?

The City of London, Ontario services 381,000 water system customers and were paying an average of $600,000 a year to flush out and prevent blockages in the system caused by “fatbergs”. Fatbergs are caused by FOG, baby wipes and other materials that come together and create giant solid masses of waste that block pipes and restrict the flow of water.

What can we do about it?

Ideally, Canadians would stop flushing FOG down drains altogether.

The city of London, Ontario has taken a bold step in providing residents with environmentally friendly containers to collect fat oil and grease from cooking. The containers are then disposed of through the garbage system where they break down in landfills or are taken to one of four environmental depots. The collected waste is taken to an anaerobic digester which is used to convert the waste into methane that can be used to produce power.

“People want to do the right thing, but we also need to make it convenient for them,” said Barry Orr, Sewer Outreach and Control Inspector for the City of London, Ontario. “There’s no excuse to use your kitchen sink as a garbage can, with or without a collection cup. Canadians can easily keep FOG out of the water system.”

FOG in sewer system courtesy City of London, ON. - As a result of London’s
‘Your Turn’ FOG collection cup campaign, the city of London has been FOG Blob blockage free for 3 years. Since the program began in 2013, 75,000 cups have been handed out. From a financial standpoint, Orr says that the city has saved over $100,000 a year on the drain diversion program.

Orr adds that some Canadian cities are in the process of offering collection cups such as Windsor, Sudbury and Sarnia and others are interested.

“London should be commended on their FOG collection and the positive impact it has on their water system,” says Colas. “Reducing FOG waste in the water infrastructure means less pressure on the system and can lower operating costs.”

The Philosophy Of Burma Shave

Burma Shave
For those who never saw any of the Burma Shave signs, here is a quick lesson in our history of the 1930's to the 1960's.

Before there were interstates, when everyone drove the old two lane roads, Burma Shave signs would be posted all over the countryside in farmers' fields. They were small red signs with white letters. Five signs, about 100 feet apart, each contained one line of a four line couplet ... and the obligatory fifth sign advertising Burma Shave, a popular shaving cream.

Car in ditch
driver in tree
The moon was full
and so was he.
Burma shave

Passing school zone
take it slow
Let our little
shavers grow
Burma shave

He saw the train
And tried to duck it
He kicked the gas
And then the bucket !!
Burma Shave

A man a miss,
A car a curve,
He kissed the miss,
And missed the curve,
Burma Shave

Elon Musk Says Tesla's Solar Roof Tiles Go On Sale in April

Elon Musk Says
Elon Musk’s plan for an all-Tesla existence is about to get one step closer, when his high-tech solar roof shingles go on sale in April.

Musk tweeted that Tesla would start taking orders for the unique solar tiles in April on Friday in the middle of a massive news-dump about the upcoming Tesla Model 3. Tesla’s new solar roof, made from a sophisticated new kind of glass tile that disguises solar panels as ordinary shingles, was announced as the icing on top of the Tesla and Solar City merger-cake. The tiles are a new type of “Tesla Glass,” that also might appear in future versions of the Model 3. We don’t yet know how much they’ll cost, but Musk said that he expects them to cost “less than a normal roof.” In other words, homeowners that need a roof replacement can go to the Tesla system and essentially make their money back in power savings after a few years.

READER LIBRARY POLL CONTINUES

Is anyone but city council surprised at the overwhelming rejection of a new library by taxpayers? Council members Brodhead, Heron and Osborne along with a lame duck mayor did not want you to have your say on the ballot during the election. Perhaps they should run their own online poll and confirm the mistake they are making. It is not too late to cancel this tax burden.

Back To The Future In A 98-Year-Old Electric Car

Back To The Future
THE new hybrid Ford Escape taxis scuttling around New York City give their occupants an aura of environmental superiority. But as far as clean electric-powered cars are concerned, these high-mileage hybrids are actually a bit behind the times.

About 100 years behind.

Starting in 1914, the Detroit Taxicab and Transfer Company built and operated a fleet of nearly 100 electric cabs. Customers would often wait for a smoother, cleaner, more tasteful electric cab, even when a gas-powered cab was already on station.

Details in the New York Times.

Letter To The Editor

Unnecessary And Costly Library
Will Be Huge Cost To Taxpayers

the gang that couldn't shoot straight
Editor:

Talk about the gang that couldn't shoot straight. The tainted and highly questionable survey commissioned by the mayor originally stated that the total cost of the proposed library branch was not to exceed $20 million. But now we are told this didn't include the cost of the land.

Apparently the "all in cost" of the branch library is now estimated to be $25 million. This will increase property taxes over 1.80% per year.

But you have to remember the city budget process permits cost overruns of up to 50% for the project to remain with approved limits. It could exceed $35 million and the mayor could declare his latest white elephant project to be within budget.

As part of the gang that couldn't shoot straight, the library Board Chair stated in her letter to the editor in the St. Albert Gazette (February 25) that "the branch library annual operating costs are estimated at $1.30 million."

The Gazette article of April 5th states "the estimated $2 million operating costs would mean another (property) tax increase of 2.00% (per year)." These cost estimates are over 50% higher than just six weeks ago. The board chair said in the same letter "library trustees are appointed by city council to carefully govern the library on behalf of citizens, including presenting a cost effective annual budget." Apparently that doesn't mean accurately.

With the existing library operating costs of over $4 million, combined with the branch building and land costs of $25 million and operating costs of $2 million per year, over 7.80% of our property taxes will be allocated to ONE service. One service that has the lowest participation and usage rates of any service the city provides.

It's time this project is shelved. And it's time councillors come to their senses and realize the mayor is not a leader. He continues to demonstrate his spendthrift ways and remains on the path of being the most spendthrift mayor in the history of our city.

He does not care what he wastes taxpayer money on. And he has wasted tens of millions.

It's time the three councillors under the mayors control realize that the emperor has no clothes. They need to demonstrate their independence by voting this project down.

Wonder whatzit?  A special rake, perhaps?
Not a rake for sure. It's a contour marking gauge, sometimes called
a profile gauge. Push it up to an irregular surface and the pins move
to give an exact shape of it. Flip it over and you can trace out the
contour on other material. Like this video:

How The Humble Potato Cannon Served The Allies In World War II

How The Humble Potato
The potato launcher, a beloved spud-flinging project for DIY tinkerers everywhere, is grandfather to most non-lethal gas-propelled armaments, like the paintball gun and the crowd-pleasing T-Shirt cannon.

And the reason for its popularity is obvious. Potato launchers are relatively easy to make, inexpensive, and dependable—with plenty of power and excitement packed in as well. The modern version is typically a combination of plastic pipe, pipe fittings, and a device that ignites flammable gas inside the gun's combustion chamber.

But the actual creation of the first true spud gun is up for debate. Some attribute its creation to the inventor of PVC, a material that would become central to the modern potato launcher. Others trace its origins back to Italian physicist Alessandro Volta and his "electric pistol." But its first modern form wouldn't take shape until some 160 years later in World War II Britain.

The Circus Kid

The Circus Kid
A husband and wife who worked for the circus went to a Florida adoption agency.

The social workers there raised doubts about their suitability.

The couple then produced photos of their 50-foot motor home, which is clean and well maintained and equipped with a beautiful nursery.

The social workers then raised concerns about the education a child would receive while in the couple's care.

"We've arranged for a full-time tutor who will teach the child all the usual subjects along with French, Mandarin, and computer skills."

Then the social workers expressed concern about a child being raised in a circus environment.

"Our nanny is a certified expert in pediatric care, welfare, and diet."

The social workers were finally satisfied. They asked, "What age child are you hoping to adopt?"

"It doesn't really matter, as long as the kid fits in the cannon."

‘Former Nasa Engineer’ Says He Saw Nine-Foot Alien On Space Shuttle During Flight

‘Former Nasa Engineer’
A MAN claiming to have worked for Nasa as an aerospace engineer has told how he once saw a nine-foot tall alien standing in a space shuttle during a US space agency mission.

Clark McClelland claims to have observed the eight to nine-feet tall being in an astronaut's suit in the bay of the shuttle.

The story, which has emerged on paranormal websites and YouTube, is true he said, giving a testimony about the supposed sighting in a vide for YouTube channel Paranormal Crucible.

The channel produced mock-up video of the oversized "alien entity" interacting with NASA astronauts in the bay.
