St. Albert Merchants Hockey With Al Popil

Hi Don, Some snaps from last night’s (Friday) St. Albert Merchants versus Morinville Jets hockey game at Akinsdale arena in St. Albert. The Jets won 4-1. I don’t get out to many hockey games anymore, maybe one every 5ive years or so. A little rusty. - Al

The Crafty Dachshund

The Crafty Dachshund
A leopard is walking through the jungle when he sees a lost dachshund in the distance.

He stealthily begins to stalk up on him, intent on making a meal of him. However, the dachshund catches a glimpse of him out of the corner of his eye.

Knowing that there's no way he can win a footrace against a leopard, he decides to employ other tactics; he sits down by a nearby pile of bones. Once the leopard is in earshot, the dachshund sighs contentedly and says to himself, "My, that was one tasty leopard."

And not being of the brightest variety, the leopard immediately high-tails it out of the area.

A monkey had been watching all this go down, and, being the cheeky rascal of the jungle, decides to spill the beans to the leopard. Swinging through the trees, he eventually catches up to the leopard, and tells him that there's no way that little dog could have eaten an entire leopard. The leopard sees he's made a fool of himself, vows revenge, and tells the monkey to hop on his back to come watch.

A few minutes later, the dachshund sees them approaching. As they get closer, he taps his foot in apparent irritation and mutters to himself, "Where's that dang monkey? I sent him off half an hour ago to fetch me another leopard!"

Facts About Iceland's Elusive Elves

11 Facts About Iceland
As if the landscape of fire and ice wasn’t wonderful enough, the stories of its magical creatures make it all the more wondrous.

Most cultures have their own breed of impish creatures invisible to human eyes. In the United States we have a fairy who takes our teeth, a rabbit that delivers chocolate, and a team of toy-building workers in the North Pole. But while our belief in magical creatures generally fades away with childhood, in Iceland, elves aren’t just for kids. As part of the county’s history, elves have played a part in the cultural fabric of the place for ages. Their lore is woven into the magic of the land, where they are as much a part of an unseen universe as they are a part of nature itself, even inspiring road and building developers to respect their habitats.

Your Laundry Is More Toxic Than You Think

Your Laundry Is More Toxic
If you're like most Americans, you have a closet filled with clothes made from synthetic materials. Fleece jacket? Check. Yoga pants. Yup. That little black dress? Probably. Today, if you're wearing clothes, then you're probably wearing polyester and the plastic that comes with it.

According to Tecnon OrbiChem, a company that analyzes data regarding world chemical use, polyester has been the world's most dominant fiber since around 2007. From 1980 to 2007, the quantity of polyester produced annually increased from 5.8 million tons to 34 million tons. By 2025, that number is expected to almost triple to around 99.8 million tons.

That's a good thing, right? From an environmental perspective, the production of polyester is no more harmful than the production of cotton. Win-win, no?
The truth is that rate of growth isn't something to celebrate.

Lessons Learned 2
A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp.

They rub it and a Genie comes out.

The Genie says, 'I'll give each of you just one wish.' 'Me first! Me first!', says the admin clerk. 'I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.' Puff! She's gone.

'Me next! Me next!' says the sales rep. 'I want to be in Hawaii , relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life.'

Puff! He's gone.

'OK, you're up,' the Genie says to the manager. The manager says, 'I want those two back in the office after lunch.'

Should We Drop The Term Millennials?

Should We Drop The Term Millennials?
Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal published a brief post describing the pitfalls of labelling young people as “millennials” in news coverage.

Why? It’s a word that’s often met with derision. It conjures an image of Snapchat-happy, gentrifying narcissists who hate hard work and criticism but love fair trade coffee and spending all their money on avocado toast.

“’Millennials’ has become a sort of snide shorthand,” the Journal writes. “We have blamed them for the housing shortage, their fickle shopping habits or for fleeing New Jersey. We had a laugh at their expense over behaviours such as fear of doorbells or their discovery of the TV antenna.”

The Story Of Mexican Coke Is A Lot More Complex Than Hipsters Would Like To Admit

The Story Of Mexican Coke
Just as lots of people wanted to buy the world a Coke, as the classic 1970s ad goes, a big chunk of the population today yearns for nothing but “Mexican Coke,” seemingly the same brown fizzy liquid in the classically curvaceous bottle—but with one important difference.

Coca-Cola that is hecho en México (made in Mexico) contains cane sugar rather than high-fructose corn syrup, the current whipping boy of the food world. Hipsters and the trendy restaurants they patronize have known about Mexican Coke for some time now, and bodegas in Los Angeles have stocked it to appeal to their Mexican-American customers. But in recent years, Mexican Coke has been appearing in the wide aisles of Costco, signaling a broader interest.

American Enterprise, a new exhibition at the National Museum of American History, features the slender glass bottle, and curator Peter Liebhold says there’s more to the story of Mexican Coke than a simple preference for one kind of sweetener over another.

After a long day on the golf course, I stopped in at Hooter’s to see some friends and have some Hot Wings and beer.

After being there for a while, one of my friends asked me which waitress I would like to be stuck in an elevator with.

I told them "The one who knows how to fix elevators".

I'm old, I'm tired, and I pee a lot."

'Irregardless' Is A Real Word

'Irregardless' Is A Real Word
No word receives as much lexical scorn as “irregardless”—I felt a shiver just typing it. But unlike the made-up terms it often gets lumped in with, including “supposably” and “sherbert,” irregardless is technically a real word. The Merriam-Webster dictionary says so.

Kory Stamper, a lexicographer for Merriam-Webster and author of Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries, explains in this video that the word was first used in dialectical American speech in the early 20th century, and remains somewhat common in spoken English. It means “regardless,” and is a blend of two words: “irrespective” and “regardless.”

Remembering Hollywood Squares

Remembering Hollywood Squares
These great questions and answers are from the days when Hollywood Squares' game show responses were spontaneous, not scripted, as they are now!

Q. True or False, a pea can last as long as 5,000 years.
A. George Gobel: Boy, it sure seems that way sometimes.

Q. You've been having trouble going to sleep. Are you probably a man or a woman?
A. Don Knotts: That's what's been keeping me awake.

Q. According to Cosmopolitan, if you meet a stranger at a party and you think that he is attractive, is it okay to come out and ask him if he's married?
A. Rose Marie: No, wait until morning.

How Charlie Brown Killed The Aluminum Christmas Tree

How Charlie Brown Killed
It's hard to imagine a children’s television show more directly responsible for the death of a consumer product line than “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

“A Charlie Brown Christmas” is perhaps the most beloved animated children’s special ever produced. It’s the story of an awkward and humble boy’s attempts to find the true meaning of Christmas.

“A Charlie Brown Christmas” resonated with 1965 television audiences in a way no other children’s programming had before.

It catapulted the career of cartoonist Charles Schulz, launched a merchandising empire that would eventually realize $1 billion in sales annually and poured the foundation for iconic storylines such as Charlie Brown’s failed attempts to kick a football, the kite-eating tree and his unrequited love for “the little red-headed girl.”

It also nearly single-handedly broke the aluminum Christmas tree industry.

ALMOST JUST LIKE YOU

By Don Hamaliuk

Are you a good parent, do your kids think you’re a star
Are you free with your love, how high do you hold the bar
Do you support all their endeavors; then give them a hand
Are you teaching them the art, to respectfully demand

Family is forever; you need to keep that in your mind
They’ll continually be watching, they’re surely not blind
So the things that you are saying and all the things you do
Will always be part of them and compliments of you

You’ve turned out like your parents; we’ve heard that one before
It may not always be that obvious, but too close to ignore
They’ll talk of you quite often, even after you have gone
Of things you’ve done so right and some you’ve done so wrong

So let them know you love them and show them that you care
When they are frightened or are worried, always be right there
And when they become a parent, they’ll know just what to do
Their kids will learn from them, to be almost just like you

The Sunday Whatzit?

Whatzit this time?
Bixman / St. Albert

READER GUESSES:

*
Morning, Don. My first guess for the Whatzit pic was of
a clock spring. I took apart a clock once when I was a
boy and the tension spring opened up in a similar
manner. Needless to say, I could not repair the clock
after that experience. Laugh -
MG in NS

*
I'd say today's Sunday Whatzit is a Toroflux Kinetic Slinky
or "Flow Rings". Basically more of an adult oriented and
mesmerizing kinetic sculpture and also used as a fun interactive
"flow toy" that's like a 4th dimensional "slinky", made of a single
piece of stainless steel. I believe they are also in vogue and
used as a "fidget thing". Now, what was that saying that Barnum
was said to have used so often… ???? -

The Supermarket

supermarket
A while ago, a new supermarket opened in town.

It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh.

Just before it goes on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain.

When you pass the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and you experience the scent of fresh mowed hay.

In the meat department there is the aroma of charcoal grilled steaks with onions.

When you approach the egg case, you hear hens cluck and cackle, and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying.

The bread department features the tantalizing smell of fresh baked bread and cookies.

I don't buy toilet paper there anymore though.

Here Comes Santa Claus (With His Satanic Sidekicks)

Here Comes Santa Claus
Austrian financial adviser Ernst Eigner is ugly and scary. But only in his "Krampus" costume with red glowing eyes and horns to frighten naughty children and "evil spirits".

His troupe is just one of an estimated 850, with 10,000 members around Austria marauding through towns and villages over the Christmas period in "Krampuslauf" parades.

"We are spreading the tradition of scaring away evil spirits," Eigner told AFP as he donned his outfit before one such event in Schwadorf near Vienna.

"Just symbolically though of course," he said, resplendent in his shaggy Roman centurion-cum-zombie costume, animal bones dangling here and there.
