Saturday Sessions September 16th Presents

This weeks Mark Ammar's Saturday Sessions show # 689 presents guest - Miss Rae - Miss Rae's honeyed voice drips with Southern Soul, front porch Delta Blues, and a smoky Parisian nightclub jazz feel. Raised on crackling vinyl, Billie Holiday and Big Mama Thornton were her initial vocal teachers. Miss Rae's big and bold voice has been compared to the likes of Etta James.

Although young at heart, Miss Rae is an old soul who will take you on a trip back in musical time. A woman of wanderlust, Miss Rae spent 40 days on a blues journey travelling throughout the southern states. Following in the footsteps of Robert Johnson and Howlin' Wolf by singing on porches under the Mississippi heat. She then crossed the waters to France, living and singing in Paris for nearly two years.

A woman of mixed ancestry, Miss Rae channels her African roots by delivering a passionate and powerful performance on stage. She treats every concert as though it were her final show. At 26 years old, Miss Rae is currently based out of her hometown of Edmonton, working on a sophomore album with the Midnight Ramblers, to be released in the Spring of 2018. So happy that Miss Rae accepted our invite to grace our stage and show as our guest. -

Draggin' Their Feet

Draggin' Their Feet
Two men are approaching each other on a sidewalk.

Both are dragging their right foot as they walk.

As they meet, one man looks at the other knowingly, points to his foot and says, Vietnam, 1969."

The other points his thumb behind him and says, "Dog crap, 20 feet back."

Fake News Is Nothing New: This Photo Hoax Went Viral A Century Ago

Fake News Is Nothing New
Fake news is big news right now. According to certain people, you can’t believe anything you read in the newspapers. However, this certainly isn’t the first time in history the media has been accused of sharing a story that may (or may not) be true.

Take, for example, the extraordinary story of the Cottingley Fairies, which hit the headlines of British newspapers a century ago. “Real fairies photographed,” claimed the reports, and who could doubt it when there was actual photographic evidence. The camera doesn’t lie, right? Or at least it didn’t in the early 1900s when photography was still relatively new. So if the camera doesn’t lie, the images of the little girls with the fairies had to be true. Didn’t it?

Not necessarily.

The 911 Call
Emily Sue passed away and Bubba called 911. The 911 operator told Bubba that she would send someone out right away. 'Where do you live?' asked the operator.

Bubba replied, 'At the end of Eucalyptus Drive.'

The operator asked, 'Can you spell that for me?' There was a long pause.

Finally Bubba said, 'How 'bout if I drag her on over to Oak Street and you pick her up there?'

You've Been Doing It Wrong! The Best Way To Slice A Loaf Of Bread Revealed

You've Been Doing It Wrong!
Slicing a loaf of bread doesn't require much skill: you just pick up a knife and get cutting.

But a restaurant worker has revealed how we've all been slicing our loaves in the wrong way.

New Yorker Sarah Jampel, who says she works in a restaurant two days a week, has said that you can produce more consistent slices if you cut a loaf on its side rather than from the top down.

Will Supervolcanoes Help Power Our Future?

Will Supervolcanoes
There’s no doubt that in coming years, we’re going to need a lot of lithium. The growing market of electric automobiles, plus new household energy storage and large-scale battery farms, and the current lack of any technology better for storage than lithium ion batteries, puts the future of energy storage in the hands of just a few places around the world where the alkali metal is extracted.

Earlier this decade, researchers from the University of Michigan projected the growth in demand for lithium up until the year 2100. It’s a lot—likely somewhere between 12 million and 20 million metric tons—but those same scientists, as well as others, at the USGS and elsewhere, have estimated that global deposits well exceed those numbers. The issue is not the presence of lithium on Earth, then, but being able to get at it. Most of what we use currently comes from just a few sources, mostly in Chile and Australia, which produce 75 percent of the lithium the world uses, and also by Argentina and China, according to USGS research from 2016.

Looking to solve this problem, Stanford geologists went in search of new sources of the metal.

Grilling Mistakes You Don't Have To Make But Probably Do

Grilling Mistakes
Men tend to pride themselves on their grills.

No, not those. We mean their grilling skills, and it's this very pride that sometimes makes it hard for them to accept advice or, heaven forbid, criticism. That's a shame. There are some pretty wonky grilling methods out there, and that means whole families are having to scrape by without ever truly knowing the pleasure of a perfectly grilled pork steak.

That's why we've compiled some of the most pernicious grilling mistakes out there. It's a public service, really. If you see yourself in any of these errors, don't feel too bad about it. Just make room in your heart for change. You'll be competition-ready in no time.

More on Urbo.

An Aging Tale

An Aging Tale
A lady is having a bad day at the roulette tables in Vegas. She's down to her last $50. Exasperated, she exclaims to the whole table, "What rotten luck I've had today! What in the world should I do now?"

A man standing next to her suggests, "I don't know, why don't you play your age?"

He walks away, but moments later, his attention is grabbed by a great commotion at the roulette table. Maybe she won! He rushes back to the table and pushes his way through the crowd.

The lady is lying limp on the floor, with the table operator kneeling over her. The man is stunned. He asks, "What happened? Is she all right?"

Ancient 'Monster' Elephant Was 50 Percent Bigger Than Modern Cousins

Ancient 'Monster' Elephant
CALGARY, Alberta — Half a million years ago, the Arabian Peninsula wasn't a sandy desert but rather a lush, wet landscape. There, a gigantic elephant — 50 percent larger than today's biggest elephants — tromped around an ancient lake before dying, a new fossil skeleton reveals.

The behemoth, known as Elephas recki, is an ancient elephant species that existed from about 3.5 million years ago to about 300,000 years ago and lived in parts of Africa and the Middle East, said study lead researcher, Iyad Zalmout, a paleontologist with the Saudi Geological Survey in Jeddah.

Medicine Lodge Rodeo With Al Popil

Hi Don, Some snaps from Saturday's pro rodeo at Medicine Lodge, AB. Interesting is that I start my outdoor rodeo season here on Mother’s day back in May and I finish my last outdoor rodeo here as well and in the rain too, just like the first one. I ran into the EMT gal who got seriously injured here when a barrel racer crashed through a locked gate last May. She is doing well. Summing up this year’s rodeo season, I’ve seen more bull riders and bull fighters get “horned” more than before. Same with barrel racers being “dumped”. The only thing is I didn’t get one real good steer rasslin’ pic this year, which is my favourite event. Any way…

medicine lodge pro 2017 - jesse lawes - al popil
Provost, AB, steer rassler, Jesse Lawes, managed to wrestle his steer down in 8.6 seconds.

medicine lodge pro 2017 - Steele Depaoli - al popil
Team roper header, Steele Depaoli, of Longview, AB, didn’t manage to lasso his steer quite right and managed a no time.

medicine lodge pro 2017 - Chris Young - al popil
Encouraged by fellow bull riders, Holden, AB, bull rider, Chris Young, managed a good score atop “Pirhana” in the bull riding event and scored 82.5.

medicine lodge pro 2017 - Kyle Evans 1 - al popil
medicine lodge pro 2017 - Kyle Evans 2 - al popil
medicine lodge pro 2017 - Kyle Evans 3 - al popil
“Pirhana” takes out his frustration on Innisfail, AB, rodeo bull fighter Kyle Evans and gives the bull fighter a toss.

Here's another version, for small quantities:

They are both Green Bean frenchers, used to cut your

Congrats to Patrick in BC for his correct guess.

Seattle Fights For Sea Animals By Going Strawless For September

Seattle Fights For Sea
Residents and businesses alike are joining the Lonely Whale Foundation to help stem ocean pollution by giving up plastic straws for the month.

Plastic straws are everywhere. It’s as if humans have forgotten how to raise a drink to their lips and tip the head back to take a sip. Sure, some people may require the assistance of a straw, but get this: In the U.S. alone, we use 500 million plastic straws daily. It’s absurd. And tragic, actually, as much of that ends up in the ocean, polluting our waters and devastating marine life.

SHE DON'T LOVE HER CELL PHONE ANYMORE

By Don Hamaliuk

It started as a hot new love affair,
It had to match most everything she’d wear.
And all the friends in her contact list,
Were like a communication party list.

She loved her cell phone more than anything else she owned.

Every day from dusk till dawn,
She turned that cell phone on.
It would wake her up and rule her day,
Heaven help if you were in the way.

She loved her cell phone more than anything else she owned.

Then one message came by surprise,
Send a little money to claim your prize.
It was so real and so convincing,
She sent her information without thinking

And she loved her cell more than anything else she owned.

It happened all so very fast,
Her account emptied to the last.
It was too late, the damage done,
Out of many she was just one.

And her cell phone was almost everything that she owned.

She turned it off in a huff,
That was it; she’d had enough.
She phoned her provider to cancelled the plan,
She is done with cell and will stick to LAN.

She don’t love her cell phone anymore.
It just sits there all broken on the floor.

READER GUESSES:

*
Quite a bit late even getting to SAP today, but being Sunday,
I sure have to take a look at the Sunday Whatzit? and for this
one, I'm going to say it sure looks like a hand-crank bean slicer
and/or french style cutter. We had the use of such a thing many
years ago, and as I recalled, the beans got put into a crock in
layers, with layers of rock salt in between. I also recall coming
across the crock that had been stored in a shed ages later,
maybe years, and the beans were just like they had been fresh
picked, but salty of course. I couldn't believe it and still can't
as I remember back. I'm sure the beans we used were tall
pole scarlet runner beans. I loved just eating them raw and
the plants were very pretty with their red blooms in the
summer. -

Estate Planning

Estate Planning
My buddy Tom was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business.

He knew that he would inherit a fortune once his sickly father died.

Tom wanted two things:
• to learn how to invest his inheritance and,
• to find a wife to share his fortune.

One evening at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away.

"I may look like just an ordinary man," he said to her, "but in just a few years, my father will die, and I'll inherit 20 million dollars."

Impressed, the woman obtained his business card.

Two weeks later, she became his stepmother.

Women are so much better at estate planning than men.

Should We Ban Nuts In Public Places?

Should We Ban Nuts
Nuts are an on-the-go snacking staple, yet they are also potentially deadly to a small fraction of the UK population. So is it time to crack down on eating nuts in public and if so, where should we start?

About two million people in the UK have a food allergy, with fish, shellfish and nuts among the most common types.

For most people, the symptoms are mild - such as an itchy mouth or a rash - but in extreme cases, it can result in difficulty breathing or a potentially fatal anaphylactic shock.
