My Travel Plans For 2018

My Travel Plans For 2018
I have been in many places, but I've never been in Kahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Kahoots with someone.

I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older.

One of my favourite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenaline flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!

I may have been in Continent, but I don't remember what country I was in. It's an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there.

The World's Most Nutritious Foods

The World's Most Nutritious Foods
Imagine the ideal food. One that contains all the nutrients necessary to meet, but not exceed, our daily nutrient demands. If such a food existed, consuming it, without eating any other, would provide the optimal nutritional balance for our body.

Such a food does not exist. But we can do the next best thing.

The key is to eat a balance of highly nutritional foods, that when consumed together, do not contain too much of any one nutrient, to avoid exceeding daily recommended amounts.

Scientists studied more than 1,000 foods, assigning each a nutritional score. The higher the score, the more likely each food would meet, but not exceed your daily nutritional needs, when eaten in combination with others.

Calculated and ranked by scientists, these are
the 100 most nutritious foods.

Final Sunset For Elke Blodgett

St. Albert lost one of it's most unique residents yesterday when Elke Blodgett left this earth.

It was my honour and privilege to call her a friend.

We spent many hours both online and in person discussing issues that were near and dear to her heart.

She was a strong supporter and booster of this website and encouraged me over the years to continue to provide another voice in this city for over 15 years now.

Elke was as feisty as she was kind and I have been on both ends of that scale.

She put St. Albert on the map with her artistry as well as her environmental campaigns and passion for the people who reside here.

I wanted to pay one final tribute to Elke by sharing some of the photos we published over the years of her beloved Big Lake.

RIP Elke. You earned your rest.

World's First Forest City To Tackle Climate Change In China

World's First Forest City
A 14-STOREY, plant-covered apartment block proposed for the Hertfordshire new town of Hemel Hempstead has been slammed by its would-be neighbours as an “over-sized monstrosity”.

Despite its green credentials as a “zero emission, net carbon-positive, sustainable” development, 68 out of 69 nearby residents have objected to the scheme.

“It is not at all in keeping with the area and dwarfs nearby properties,” said one. “The design is unattractive. Covering it in greenery doesn’t fool anyone.”

But 5,700 miles away in Liuzhou in southern China attitudes could not be more different.

What Do Those Food Expiration Dates Really Mean? Not Much, CEO Says

What Do Those Food
How much food have you thrown out because it was past the expiration date?

How many times have you debated with your spouse, child, parent or roommate about whether the food is safe to eat?

What do those arbitrary dates really mean, anyway?

Apparently, not much. That's according to Yoav Levy, CEO of Freshpoint, a startup out of Haifa, Israel. The company has developed a new technique for determining how fresh your food really is. He says traditional food labels use out-of-date, inaccurate information to determine freshness, and that's resulting in literally a trillion dollars worth of food waste.

Details on From The Grapevine.

The Year Cadillac Gave Drivers The Electric Chair

The Year Cadillac Gave
Some say the unusually cold, snowy winter weather in the Eastern United States is a symptom of climate change. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, one thing is certain: come winter, automobile seat warmers are as welcome in your car as a steaming cup of hot chocolate and a snuggly blanket while sitting next to a crackling fire. Thankfully, this automotive indulgence is by now commonplace. Still, you might wonder why it took so long to become standard equipment on cars.

Swedish automaker Saab gets the credit for making a heated driver’s seat standard equipment on the Saab 99, the smaller Saab 96 sedan, and the Saab 95 station wagon in 1972. This inevitably led to the first joke about the driver having a hot ass.

While most Saab buyers were probably pleased that the ’72 Saab was the first car certified by the federal government to withstand 5-mph crashes, the thought of shoving a heating pad in the seat was clearly a bigger attraction. Unlike today’s systems, this one activated automatically when the ignition was turned on and the cabin’s temperature was below 58 degrees. It shut off once the seat temperature reached 82 degrees. Saab claimed that this electric chair would not shock you, and was not affected by dampness that came in contact with it.

But before you start high-fiving the Swedes for their innovation, thank Cadillac instead.

SUCH A SIN

By Don Hamaliuk

It’s just too late; the needle is in
You sold your soul, to such a sin
Your wife is gone and all you own
The darkened street, is your new home

I can’t believe, you could live this way
What would have made you, go astray
Was your past so bad, you had to escape
From a world of sadness; mostly hate

My father loved me and showed it too
Dished-out his discipline, when it was due
I had my fights, with my sisters and brothers
Performed my chores, when I had my druthers

Our family was happy, but sometimes sad
All emotions, were eventually unclad
This may be the answer, for the way I now see
There’ll never be that needle, inside of me

Welcome To Monowi, Nebraska: Population 1

Welcome To Monowi
Five miles from the South Dakota border in the remote northern reaches of the US state of Nebraska, a long dirt road cuts through rolling prairie grasslands and golden wheat fields towards downtown Monowi, a place you can see in its entirety by climbing any of its hay bales.

An abandoned church, whose empty pews are now filled with tractor tyres, stands opposite the decaying skeleton of a grain elevator. Weeds and brome grass twist around the rotting remnants of homes that are collapsing in on themselves. And inside a white, squat building with paint peeling off its frame, 84-year-old Elsie Eiler is flipping pork fritters and cracking open beer bottles for a pair of regulars under a sign that reads: “Welcome To The World Famous Monowi Tavern. Coldest Beer In Town!”

Bitcoin Explained

Bitcoin Explained
In case you were as confused as I was about the reality and value of Bitcoin!

Not long ago in Asia a merchant found that a lot of monkeys lived near a certain village.

One day he came to the village saying he wanted to buy these monkeys!

He announced that he will buy the monkeys at $100 each.

The villagers thought that this man must be crazy - how can somebody buy stray monkeys at $100 each?

Still, some people caught some monkeys and gave it to this merchant and he gave $100 for each monkey.

This news spread like wildfire and people caught monkeys and sold them to the merchant.

After a few days, the merchant announced that he will buy monkeys at $200 each.

The lazy villagers also ran around to catch the remaining monkeys!

They sold the remaining monkeys at $200 each.

Then the merchant then announced that he will buy monkeys @ $500 each!

The villagers start to lose sleep! ... They caught six or seven monkeys, which was all that was left and got $500 each.

The villagers were waiting anxiously for the next announcement.

Then the merchant announced that he is going on holiday for a week but when he returns, he will buy monkeys at $1000 each!

He said that his employee would to take care of the monkeys he bought pending his return.

The merchant went on holiday!

The villagers were frantic and very sad as there were no more monkeys left for them to sell it at $1000 each.

Then the merchant’s employee contacted them and told them that he would secretly sell them some monkeys at $700 each.

This news spread like fire. Since the merchant buys monkey at $1000 each, they would achieve a $300 profit for each monkey.

The next day, villagers queued up near the monkey cage.

The employee sold all the monkeys at $700 each. The rich bought monkeys in large lots. The poor borrowed money from money lenders and bought monkeys!

The villagers took care of their monkeys and waited for the merchant to return.

But nobody came! ... Then they ran to the employee ...

But he too could not be found!

The villagers then realized that they have bought the useless stray monkeys at $700 each and were now unable to sell them!

This monkey business is now known as Bitcoin

It will make a lot of people bankrupt and a very few people filthy rich in this monkey business.

What Is Cheese Tea?

What Is Cheese Tea?
Cheese tea. It's exactly what it sounds like. A combination of cheese and tea. But it's not what you're probably picturing if, like me, you first imagined a cup of hot tea with cheese melted into it somehow.

It's served cold, and the bottom is tea-based. It can be a milk, classic, matcha or some other tea variety, and the cheese comes in on the top layer of the drink.
"Cheese tea is similar to a tea latte, but the foam is a little more thick and made from a whipped cheese topping," says Jenny Zheng, founder of Little Fluffy Head Cafe in Los Angeles.

Why I Teach My Kids To Be Rude

Why I Teach My Kids
"Stop following me!" my 7-year-old said firmly to another child at the playground. "I don't want to play with you right now!" He had repeated the boundary multiple times, but to no avail. The mother finally stepped in and grabbed her child in anger, loudly saying, "Come on. You don't want to play with that kid anyway. He's being rude."

I bit my tongue. I wanted to defend my son. I also wanted to apologize for his perceived rudeness. But stopped myself. He wasn't being rude. He had asked the child several times to stop following him. His boundaries and voice weren't being respected.

My sensitive little guy looked up at me, concerned, after hearing an adult call him rude. I smiled assuredly. "Some people, even adults, are still learning what the word 'rude' means," I said. "And that lady used it the wrong way. What she should have said was, 'Please respect that kid's boundaries.'"

Should The 840 HP Dodge Demon Be Banned?

Should The 840 HP
Here on TreeHugger we do have a tendency to complain about big gas guzzlers and talk a lot about the safety of people who walk and bike. I have even called for a slow car movement so that we could all drive little fuel efficient Isetta style cars. I worry about drivers behind the wheel of Fast and Furious cars; they often don't know how to handle them. Years ago, these kinds of cars were known as Doctor Killers; Peter Cheney describes the Porsches of the time:

Once upon a time, the Porsche 911 was a hard car to drive well. The earliest 911s were known for front ends that got light at speed, and a tendency to spin if you mishandled the throttle on corners. This was a car that called for a master's touch. Unfortunately, many of those drawn to it had more money than skill – a conundrum that led to the car acquiring the nickname "The Doctor Killer."
