Cast Off Fishing Line Endangers Wildlife
This week I happened to run across some photos on face book of a goose that had its feet tangled in fishing line that it required immediate medical attention. Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton stepped in to go to Hermitage Park Trout Pond and recover the bird. The injury was quite deep as shown in this photograph.

The goose did lose its back hallux (toe). Today's photograph (bottom) shows the bird is doing well and recovering due to some dedicated staff. The rehab centre has a hospital located at 12815-128 st. in Edmonton.

The centre runs on dedicated volunteers that have vets as well. The centre does runs on donations from public and private sector. Check out their web site.
They also have a hot line of 780-914-4118 for emergency contact. Email is: info@wildlife-edm.ca The recovery centre is located near Spruce Grove.
The fishermen who leave fishing line lying around need to be reported for littering. Some of the new fishing lines that are braided are hard to cut with a sharp knife. I was quite upset looking at the photographs. It makes no sense to me why fishing line is hard to pick up and deposited in on site garbage cans. Capital city clean up has stepped in to help pick up the fishing line. Fishing line I have found is in the weeds close to the edge of the water.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Mrs. Jenkins
18/08/2012 06:10

She was impressed by the way Mrs. J. preceded every request to her husband with endearing terms such as: Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, etc.
The Jenkins were married 70 years and, clearly, they were still very much in love.
While Mr. J. was in the living room, the friend leaned over to Mrs. J. to say, 'I think it's wonderful that, after all these years, you still call your husband all those loving names.'
The elderly Mrs. J. hung her head, 'I have to tell you the truth,' she said, 'his name slipped my mind about 10 years ago, and I'm scared to death to ask him what his name is.'

Nighttime In Istanbul - A Photo Essay
Images courtesy KC4 Photography. KC4 has written for SAP before, mainly food essays from travels in the southern U.S. and is based in Calgary.

Istanbul has an active night life and many shops stay open late. Crime is comparatively low and while many explore the streets at night, unaccompanied women can expect to have more than a fair share of attention paid to them. Care must be taken to watch your step. The city is very clean, but streets are steep and the sidewalks can be narrow and uneven. Many subterranean stairways have no railing to warn of their existence.

Above Left: This is the 67 meter Galata Tower. Built in 1348 as the crowning glory of the fortifications around the Genoese citadel of Galata, and later serving as a fire lookout for the city of Istanbul, it now serves the city as an entertainment destination with shops, restaurants and observation level. There is also a popular night club on the top. Istanbul youth like to use the base as a meeting and gathering place.
Above Right: Fresh food, fabrics, handmade wares, jewelry and high technology are all available at the street markets.Being a major port city, anything you could possibly want or need is available for purchase. Curiously, most if not all of the shop keepers are male.

Above Left: Cafe's are the foundation of Istanbul's night life with no outing being complete without stopping at one for at least a quick tea, strong coffee or snack.
Above Right: Any hole in the wall can serve as a place to invite others to sit and enjoy a tea and possibly sheesha, the sweetly flavoured tobaccos smoked in the water pipes called hookas. The tea is typically fruity, hot and served in small glasses. It is not unusual for locals to have 8 - 10 glasses of tea a day. Visitors to shops can expect to be offered free tea, and possibly a snack of nuts or candy. Also of note, it is considered an insult not to accept the tea offered as the Turks take pride in their gracious hospitality.

Above Left: Street food is very popular in Istanbul. Since it is carefully licensed and regulated it is reasonably safe to eat, even for travellers. This vendor is checking his phone while waiting for customers to purchase his fragrant, freshly roasted chestnuts.
Above Right: Aksim Tunel - This tramway shares space with pedestrians walking a busy shopping and banking area. Riders can take this tram across the Golden Horn to Old Istanbul.

Two Quarters Or A Loonie?
16/08/2012 05:24

The barber puts a Loonie in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, 'Which do you want, son?'
The boy takes the quarters and leaves the Loonie. 'What did I tell you?' said the barber. 'That kid never learns!'
Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store and says ; 'Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take
the quarters instead of the Loonie?'
The boy licked his cone and replied, 'Because the day I take the Loonie, the game's over!'

Isn't it odd that the city makes that claim when former and current councillors have admitted it is a cash cow? And didn't the mayor express concern when revenues dropped? If revenues dropped entirely, it would prove photo radar works, but it continues to be a cash cow. Too bad the city can't be honest, admit that and remove that untruth from their website. 15/08/2012 05:42

The trees are whistling for the dogs.
The best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
Hot water comes from both taps.
You can make sun tea instantly.
You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.
The temperature drops below 90 F and you feel a little chilly.
You discover that in July and August it only takes two fingers to steer your car (one on each hand).
You discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.
You actually burn your hand opening the car door.
You break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 5:30 A.M.
Your biggest motorcycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death"?
You realize that asphalt has a liquid stage.
The potatoes cook underground, so all you have to do is pull one out and add butter.
The cows are giving evaporated milk.
Farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs.
A buddy killed a mosquito that was carrying a canteen.
They caught a 20 pound catfish that had ticks on it.
A fire hydrant was seen bribing a dog.

The Photography Of Al Popil

Hi Don,
Starry, starry night. Went out to Fedorah Saturday night to photograph the Perseid meteor shower. Didn't get much but the northern lights were out and a very fiery red quarter moon. The moon on the left side of the church is round do to a thirty second exposure and the glow in the background on the right side is from the town of Gibbons.

Suing Their Tushes Off?
Don:
If you've found Libor and Euribor so murky it made your head hurt, you haven't been alone. You may find this Spiegel essay slightly more illuminating ... slightly.
Here's an excerpt to get folks' attention: "Morgan Stanley has already made its projections, estimating the total cost to the banks, including fines and damage payments, at $22 billion, of which $1.5 billion would apply to Deutsche Bank."
Elsewhere here is this fun fact. European Community law limits fines to corporations to 1/10 of their yearly profit. Now I think more, this may be the foundation of Morgan Stanley's projection: assume that every member bank is going to be fined to the max. Add up all the suspect banks' yearly profit, and divide by ten.
If so, that's probably way low, because everybody and his brother Schlomo is lining up to sue their, uh, tushes off.

He also started to listen to both country and blues stylists, Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, Jimmy Bryant, BB King, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Duane Allman etc., then a bit later guys like Mark Knopler, Vince Gill, Robben Ford, Lenny Breau and many others. Also listened to a lot of acoustic, country blues type stuff and ragtime music adapted from the piano to guitar. (Jimmy Van Deusen, Merle Travis, Leon Redbone, Mississippi John Hurt, etc). They throw the switch and nothing happens. They all immediately fall to the floor on their knees, beg for forgiveness, and release her.
The second one is strapped in and gives her last words. "I just graduated from the Harvard School of Law and I believe in the power of justice to intervene on the part of the innocent."
They throw the switch and again, nothing happens. Again they all immediately fall to their knees, beg for forgiveness and release her.
The last one is strapped in and says, "Well, I'm from the University of Kentucky and just graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and I'll tell ya right now, ya'll ain't gonna electrocute nobody if you don't plug this thing in.

Instead, in the never ending quest to boost sales at all hours of each and every day, fast-food chains find it far too limiting to accept classic nutritional concepts — like that there should only be three meals per day and that it’s not a good idea to start the day off with a sugary soft drink.

Journal Still Expects Advertiser Support?
Yesterday's announcement that the Edmonton Journal would outsource its printing to Great West Newspapers in St. Albert and lay off nearly 100 employees should raise some serious questions for Edmonton advertisers who use the Journal.
With the loss of 70 jobs alone in the Eastgate printing plant and 25 more in the newsroom, it appears that not a single new job is created in St. Albert.
Worse still, those 25 newsroom jobs, according to one of those laid off employees, are said to be being outsourced to the city of Hamilton and to the Philippines. I will leave readers to guess where the majority will go.
Many of those 70 jobs in the printing plant are likely to be high paying, long term pressman positions, now lost to those loyal employees who spent many years of their lives devoted to the Journal.
As for those new profits that will be created in St. Albert, will much of that be funnelled off to the Glacier corporation who hold the majority stake in Great West?
Just how does a newspaper who calls itself the 'Edmonton' Journal seek to save money by sending its production costs out of the city of Edmonton?
And how can a corporation expect Edmonton advertisers to support their Edmonton business when it does not do the same for the economy of Edmonton?
Do their advertisers realize that the payroll saved by the 'Edmonton' Journal will no longer be available to them by those nearly 100 employees?
If I were an Edmonton based business and a Journal rep knocked on my door seeking advertising support, I know what I would tell them.

Consider Safety Before Blaming Chopper
Don,
This article on page 5, Speaker's Corner in the Rat Creek Press about a noisy chopper is missing some key details. I live about 3 blocks from the landing pad and the noise is not that bad. The take off times in the evening is around 10:00 p.m. weather permitting. The times recorded in that article are not accurate.
The area in question has a high rate of crime as documented on there Edmonton police crime map. I would like to think a little common sense needs to be exercised here. Local crime is why the chopper is there and step up in enforcement by bylaw, police and citizens will help reduce the cost of flying Air 1 and give a safer place to live.
The noise that comes from Calder train yards and Yellowhead Trail is a lot louder.
Before buying a house a review of the area is top of the list. Why would somebody want to buy a house in a crime ridden neighbourhood. Before everybody condemns the operation of Air 1, maybe they should review the facts as to why it is there to begin with.
Paul C.

Moving Newsroom Ops to Philippines/Hamilton?

This just in from a former Journal employee:
Hi Don:
I thought you may like this -- the Edmonton Journal is closing its Eastgate plant and moving press operations to Great West printing in St. Albert, starting in 2013.
It puts 70 workers out of work. They join the 25 newsroom people who get pink-slipped Aug. 31 as their jobs are outsourced to Hamilton, Ont., and the Philippines.
The EJ story is in Monday's rag. You don't know where you heard this from. Never hurts to be the first ones off the Titanic!

Sorry to hear that as another piece of a once powerful newspaper dwindles away again? I've heard this rumour for over a year now, but while we await official word, I very much doubt that your tip is not true. I cancelled my subscription of over 20 years some months ago. The Philippines eh? Way to go for Canadian jobs!
A Look At Rockin' August
Big crowds attended the Rockin' August Show and Shine yesterday in Lions Park and along the banks of the Sturgeon, a scenic spot for the event with great weather too. Even Mom and the kids were having fun while Dad took in the big show.

Scene And Noted Around St. Albert
* People have asked me why CTV does not broadcast their daytime news during the Olympics, just the supper hour news. Short answer, I have no idea. Polls continue to show that interest in the Olympics is waning and a majority of folks don't even follow the events. That should make local newscasts a priority, not the Olympics. On further thought, I guess I do know. Follow the money. Meanwhile it is likely that Global will seize the opportunity to surge ahead in local news ratings once again.
* George Proulx of the city writes: After reading in Friday's issue of the Edmonton Journal re the 'Pensions, etc.' for the Health Care 'Executives', I think the following speaks for itself: NEVER IN THE PAST WITH THE ALBERTA HEALTH SERVICES HAS SO MUCH BEEN REQUIRED FOR SO FEW PAID FOR BY SO MANY.
* Those AUPE 'rip off' TV ads are wearing thin with many viewers. Is using senior citizens to further their demands an acceptable practice? How many of those seniors actually understand the issue? And isn't this the pot calling the kettle black? The AUPE claim companies are taking millions from the system, but think it's somehow OK for their members to do the same in a transfer of wealth to them? I could be wrong, but then again, it leaves me thinking that there must be a better way of presenting their viewpoint.
* Isn't Nancy Carlson, Global news relief anchor, head and shoulders the best female on air at Global Edmonton with her polished and natural delivery? She may very well be the best in Edmonton. She ranks right up there with Carolyn Jarvis who used to be in that very position and has gone on to host 16:9 on Global's national network. Why Nancy isn't sitting next to Gord Steinke on the evening news is a mystery to many.
