People Who Use Political Spin

People Who Use Political Spin
Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California, was doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that Senator Harry Reid's great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor.

The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows in Montana territory.

On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: 'Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.

So Judy recently e-mailed Senator Harry Reid for information about their great uncle.

Believe it or not, Harry Reid's staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:

"Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honour when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed."

That's real Political Spin.

O.J. Simpson's Former Agent Will Try To Sell White Bronco On 'Pawn Stars'

O.J. Simpson's Former
The infamous white Bronco from O.J. Simpson’s 1994 police chase on the Los Angeles 405 freeway will be featured on the Las Vegas-based reality television show Pawn Stars, the A&E Network confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.

The Bronco will be showcased in an Aug. 14 episode on the History channel. Pawn Stars personality Rick Harrison, who co-owns World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, told the New York Post: “It’s in amazing shape. I drove it around and it felt a little odd, but it runs great.”

Election Candidates:

Letters To The Editor Welcome

Screen Shot 2017-08-17 at 8.49.19 AM
Once again this year, the St. Albert Gazette has chosen to enact a ban on letters to the editor from any municipal election candidate. (See screen shot left.)

We at SAP on the other hand, believe any candidate who wishes to express viewpoints should be allowed to do so. A ban on such letters is questionable because the only valid reason would be space limitations. Such limitations no longer exist when one has a web site to carry information for voters.

To deny candidates the right to inform voters of their opinions or positions on local issues during an election campaign is a disservice to candidates. Worse, it is a disservice to voters at a time when they should be fully informed on the views and opinions of candidates to allow an informed choice at the polls.

In contrast to the Gazette, St. Albert's Place will publish any letter that any city of St. Albert municipal candidate might wish to write as a service to the public. An added bonus is that we will provide a separate section of this site, keeping all letters received in a single location eliminating searching multiple social media sites and pages for such information.

Letters from candidates are welcome provided they are approximately 500 words maximum. We will accept email letters only, but not in .pdf format.

Don New Caricature Small
Of course letters from readers are welcome as well, but if the subject is civic election related they must be signed with your true name, and a valid email address and you must be a resident of the city of St. Albert.

We welcome all viewpoints and consider them to be an important part of an election campaign.

Can We Take A Moment To Appreciate Ketchup?

Can We Take A Moment
Ketchup has taken a lot of grief lately.

Often it's from nutritionists shrilling that we need to lock it up and throw away the key, lest our children drown in all that corn syrup.

Certainly, the health concerns are legitimate. And there’s no getting around the fact that sugar-addled ketchup — a tablespoon of it packs more sugar than a chocolate chip cookie.

But this isn’t dinner. Or, at least, it shouldn’t be.

More on the mother nature network.

Advice From An Old Farmer

Advice From An Old Farmer
Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in.

If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around.

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.

Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.

Most times, it just gets down to common sense.

Who's Going To Fly The Plane?

Who's Going To Fly
Willie and Waylon (Nelson and Jennings, respectively) famously advised “Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys,” but you probably should give serious consideration to directing them toward being pilots.

The United States is facing a commercial pilot shortage over the next two decades that is certain to drive up the pay and benefits of America’s already best-paid work groups. And that same pilot shortage threatens to limit future air travel options for consumers as airlines are forced to reduce service on, or drop some routes entirely because they won't be able to find enough pilots to cover all t he flying they want to offer and that consumers would like.

The Junior Director

The Junior Director
All the members of the company's Board of Directors were called into the Chairman's office, one after another, until only Ted, the junior member, was left sitting outside.

Finally it was his turn to be summoned.

Ted entered the office to find the Chairman and the other four Directors seated at the far end of the boardroom table.

Ted was instructed to stand at the other end of the table, which he did.

The Chairman looked Ted squarely in the eye, and with a stern voice, he asked, "Have you ever had sex with my secretary, Miss Foyt?"

"Oh, no, sir, positively not!" Ted replied.

"Are you absolutely sure?" asked the chairman.

"Honest, I've never been close enough to even touch her!"

"You'd swear to that?"

"Yes, I swear I've never had sex with Miss Foyt, anytime, anywhere,"insisted Ted.

"Good. Then you fire her."

Amazon Is Cracking Down On Fake Eclipse Glasses That Could Get People Blinded

Amazon Is Cracking Down
In just over a week on August 21st, the US will experience its first total solar eclipse in nearly 40 years. Seeing as staring at the sun, even while it is obscured by the moon, for any length of time can be extremely hazardous up to and including the point of severe eye damage or blindness, it’s not a suggestion to buy eclipse glasses that meet minimum safety standards. It’s pretty much mandatory.

All this is why news Amazon has detected vendors selling “counterfeit or unsafe versions” of the glasses, per the Verge, is more than a little discomforting. According to an Amazon safety notification obtained by the Verge, the e-commerce giant has removed the pages for products it could not verify met minimum standards including “MASCOTKING Solar Eclipse Glasses 2017 - CE and ISO Certified Safe Shades for Direct Sun Viewing — Eye Protection.” It is also offering refunds to customers who have purchased those products.

His musical attributes include working with bands Three Times The Blues, being the longest standing member of The Front Porch Roots Review, a former member of the house band at The Yardbird Suite, Jimmy and The Sleepers who represented western Canada at the Memphis Blues Challenge in 2011, The Fabulous Canolatones, The Ronnie Rault band, The Blues Aliens, and his own band The Flying Crawdads.

Crawdad, along with Tommy Roschkov and Willie James Engel received a five year certificate of merit award from The Hardisty Old Folks Home for their music charity work they have kindly donated. You can catch Crawdad co-hosting at The Sunday Soul Service open stage every Sunday afternoon at The Newcastle Pub from 3-6:30. Great to have my friend Crawdad back for a visit. He will be sitting in for the whole jam. -

Advice From An Old Farmer

Advice From An Old Farmer
Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.

The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin’.

Always drink upstream from the herd.

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.

Scientists Discover 91 Volcanoes Below Antarctic Ice Sheet

Scientists Discover 91
Scientists have uncovered the largest volcanic region on Earth – two kilometres below the surface of the vast ice sheet that covers west Antarctica.

The project, by Edinburgh University researchers, has revealed almost 100 volcanoes – with the highest as tall as the Eiger, which stands at almost 4,000 metres in Switzerland.

Geologists say this huge region is likely to dwarf that of east Africa’s volcanic ridge, currently rated the densest concentration of volcanoes in the world.

Edmonton's Little Known Street Car Museum
01 DSCF2563
I recently rode the street car across High Level Bridge. They had two cars running so more people could use it to get from events on Whyte Ave to the events at the Legislature. Good job as you will see from the photo of the line up. Gave us the unique opportunity to see the routine followed when the two cars pass each other and see the Street Car Museum, which I had never heard of before that day.

Phyllis Diller's Take On Life

Phyllis Diller's Take On Life
I want my children to have all the things I couldn't afford. Then I want to move in with them.

Most children threaten at times to run away from home. This is the only thing that keeps some parents going.

Any time three New Yorkers get into a cab without an argument, a bank has just been robbed.

We spend the first twelve months of our children's lives teaching them to walk and talk and the next twelve years telling them to sit down and shut up.

The Curious Case Of The U-1206

The Curious Case Of The U-1206
On April 6, 1945, a German navy submarine named the U-1206 departed from the port city of Kristiansand, in Nazi-occupied Norway, and began its first combat patrol. Assigned to the waters of the North Atlantic, its mission was to seek out and destroy British and American ships on the high seas.

For the 50-man crews aboard submarines like the U-1206, life wasn’t just extremely dangerous, it was also very unpleasant: Quarters were cramped, and the bathrooms were no exception. There were only two heads (toilets), and because one of the heads was right next to the galley, the space was often used to store food. When it was, the toilet was unavailable, meaning that the entire crew had to share the remaining toilet.

ONE’S JUST NOT ENOUGH

By Don Hamaliuk

Pass it over here; I need another puff
It gives me such a feeling; one's just not enough
If it were sold at Shopper’s, I could easily get more
No need to go underground, just to have to score

July 1st is coming, I hope it gets here quick
Living in reality, is making me so sick
The things that I hear today, listening to the news
So many different issues, so many different views

I thought I was just normal, but now I’m not so sure
I think of problems way too much and cannot find a cure
I need to take a holiday, but can’t afford the fare
I’m hoping marijuana, will help me clear the air

Boy, I haven't used one of those for a while and it sure looks
like the good old
Ideal brand, Medium Safe-T-Grip Fuse Puller
used for pulling/inserting
cartridge fuses of about 1/2" to 1"
diameter in electrical systems with fuse boxes (as opposed to
maybe more modern breaker boxes). More often used in older
commercial installations rather than residential electrical services,
at least in this BC area. I never really did get used to the sparks
that often occurred when inserting a good replacement cartridge
fuse. -

Close Roads So Children Can Play In The Street Like Their Parents Did, Say Public Health Experts

Close Roads So Children
Roads should be closed regularly to allow children to play in the street as they did a generation ago, health experts have said, after a study showed pilot schemes increased youngsters’ activity five-fold.

More than 500 communities in Britain have already signed up to the ‘Playing Out’ initiative, which works with local councils to temporarily pedestrianise roads for an hour or two each week to allow children to play safely near their homes.

A new analysis of the simple scheme by the University of Bristol found that residents reported a greater sense of a community, overall happiness, and said their areas were more friendly and safer.
