How To Tell If Your Cat Really Loves You

How To Tell If Your Cat
Grumpy cats, cute cats, those weird cats that like to walk on their two back legs… kitties are easily one of the internet's favourite obsessions. But as much as we pour love and adoration onto our tiny furry friends, they tend to treat us with indifference at best.

But, just when you think your cat is plotting to kill you in your sleep, you might be missing all the little ways your furball is trying to tell you that they love you.

To decode those telltale signs of love, we asked Nicky Trevorrow, Cats Protection’s Behaviour Manager for a bit of insight. From scratching to staring you out, here are 10 ways to tell how your cat really feels.

Noise Pollution Could Make It Hard For Birds To Reproduce

Noise Pollution Could
New research suggests that there are some circumstances that could cause birds to have something similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. These specifically include distracting loud noises that could interfere with the health of adult birds and their chicks alike.

In a study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers from the University of Colorado at Boulder, California Polytechnic State University, and the Florida Museum of National History discovered that certain bird species are less successful in hatching eggs when they nest in noisy areas like they often do.

Can An Employer Demand That You Go To Work Naked?

Can An Employer Demand
"I want everyone working in this bank to come to work on Monday naked," ordered the bank manager.

Hmm, would it really be acceptable for an employer to demand this? David Edmonds dons his thinking cap.

Question: What do tattoos, crucifixes, headscarves, beards and high-heeled shoes have in common?

Answer: they've all been the subject of sackings and disputes between employers and employees.

There was the London receptionist given the boot for not wearing high-heels, the Belgian receptionist told to hang up her hat for wearing a headscarf, the woman sacked for wearing a crucifix, the employees branded intolerant for objecting to tattoos and the firm in the cross hairs for banning facial fuzz.

All these stories raise the question of what an employer can require that their employees wear. Can they legitimately impose on their staff any dress code they wish?

A New Breakfast Craze Called 'Millionaire's Bacon' Is Sweeping San Francisco For $7 A Slice

A New Breakfast Craze
Millennials have heard enough about avocado toast — the dish that sparked outrage earlier this year when a millionaire said young people can't afford to buy homes because they spend too much money on overpriced toast.

Now there's a new expensive breakfast indulgence that San Franciscans are obsessed with.

"Millionaire's bacon" is a thick-cut, succulent-and-sweet version of the breakfast staple and it's increasingly popping up on menus across the Bay Area. Its decadence might make you feel rich, but you certainly don't need to be a millionaire to try it. The bacon ranges from $2 to $7 a slice.

St. Albert Council
Muzzles Speakers

muzzled-man
In a move that will dumbfound city residents, their new council made it much more difficult for city residents to make a verbal presentation to council at Monday's city council meeting. Further they reserved the right to review material in advance and outright reject the subject one wishes to speak on.

In creating a slippery new slope, council has spoken and residents will now have to follow new and specific rules to address council. City residents now face the possibility of it taking up to four weeks to appear before council and then only if what they wish to say is acceptable to the people controlling the process.

Gone are the days when one simply registered they wanted to speak, right up to the very minute the mayor called for any other speakers in the gallery who wished to speak, and it was previously allowed.

If I understood what I watched in disbelief unfold, now those who wish to speak will have to notify the city's legislative officer two weeks prior to being approved to speak to council, submit a detailed copy of the contents of their presentation including any slide shows that accompany it.

The city legislative officer will then review the material and if approved, will set a date for the person to appear to speak before council.

This smacks of council control and prohibition of freedom of speech by an unelected member of administration.

Is this the result of some former councillor convincing new councillors they need to protect themselves from being hijacked by a speaker without prior warning? We think so.

Remember Steve Stone appearing before council to admonish them for their actions in the hiring of a member of council as the second in command at administration? And it was done without any interference by council, resulting in a new city official who was woefully under qualified for the position. That further resulted in council being forced to clean up their act and ultimately led to a formal inspection by the provincial government.

Isn't that exactly how democracy should work? Now city council has enacted controls to prevent that kind of thing ever happening again. At least that is my take on the matter and it should alarm residents in the extreme.

This is the death of democracy in our city and so very wrong that new rookie council members have fallen to the 'protect ourselves at all costs' move, that likely emanated from more experienced members of council.

Councillor Hughes saw right through the charade and called on council to reconsider. They refused and passed it over her objections.

Democracy died in St. Albert last night and people should rise up against this repressive move.

Don New Caricature Small
If there is not a revolt at the next council meeting by dozens of speakers demanding the right to speak, this will go down as the most totalitarian move ever by a council in St. Albert.

How about if St. Albertans? Are you going to stand for such a clampdown on your rights?

We had a power outage at our house this morning.

So our PC, our Laptop, iPad, were all down as well, The TV, DVR, Bose systems down too.

Then I discovered my iPhone was run down with no way to charge it. And to make matters worse, it was Cold/ Blowing with Rain /Snow so I could not go out!

I went to the kitchen to make a coffee and then remembered of course, the coffee machine also needs power.

So, I just sat and talked with my wife for a couple of hours.

How To Break Your Rotisserie Chicken Habit

How To Break Your
They're easy, but you might be hitting that button too often.

Rotisserie chickens — those $5.99 (or less) already cooked birds that supermarkets sell — are in the news. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Americans bought well over 600 million of them last year alone, more than any other year. Our consumption of rotisserie chickens has continually increased since they became a supermarket staple in the 1990s, yet their price has not increased. Grocery stores don't want to raise their prices.

Why have they kept prices steady for 20 years? They count on making more money by keeping the price down. Many people, myself included, often buy their side dishes at the same time they buy a rotisserie chicken. Those side dishes are money makers for the grocery store.

Our City

Give Us A Break Council
GaYCUs2f
We want to keep readers abreast of the latest pressing issues in our city and today's council meeting supplies those issues.

We would love to let readers know about road or sidewalk improvements, cost saving measures to reduce taxes, employee reductions to cut payroll or whatever positive issues that could be introduced.

You know. The kind of stuff that makes taxpayers sit up and take notice that their newly elected council is working hard on their behalf.

Perhaps even an acknowledgement that they have finally shelved the branch library issue like voters told them to, instead of trying to advance the wishes of the 32 percent who voted yes over the 68 percent who voted no? Hard core and meaningful stuff like that always gets our attention.

But what do we get from this bunch? None of the above.

Take a look below at the first few items on today's council agenda as published in City Lights on Saturday.

Screen Shot 2018-01-14 at 5.33.49 PM

Good grief, instead they're gonna tackle the pressing issues of plastic bags, straws and cutlery in our perfect city. Council will forge ahead saving the world by banning plastics in such a minuscule area of their authority that all they will do is PO residents and businesses alike. Forging ahead saving the planet is but one more example of social engineering by the few to save the many, by this and other councils before them. All part of the wonderful Social Master Plan.

Do debates like this not belong in the legislature or parliament, not council chambers? And even if it was passed in Edmonton or Ottawa, it would still have nearly zero effect on the globe, just like a St. Albert ban will have no effect on the rest of the country. None. Ziltch. Zero. Remember the carbon tax? Same darn thing.

Yep, that is it in a nutshell folks. Much ado about nothing that will have little effect on local business and residents other than to cost us all more money. And have they any clue just how much it will cost fast food restaurants to eliminate plastic cutlery, switch to metal utensils and wash them daily? Nor the health hazards such procedures can cause if improperly done? Brain dead social engineering at its finest.

Way to go council. Another waste of time at our expense. Interfering in business where they do not belong. Wake me up council when you discover some sound policies to do some good in the community. Not to mention save instead of spend while you are at it. And get off the social engineering bandwagon, please. You're way out of your league.

The Cynical Philosopher

The Cynical Philosopher
♦ You're not fat, you're just easier to see.

♦ If you think nobody cares whether you're alive, try missing a couple of payments.

♦ I always wondered what the job application is like at Hooters. Do they just give you a bra and say, "Here, fill this out?”

There Was One TV. And, surprise, we didn't argue all night about who should get to watch their favourite show. Most of the time, we all liked the same shows!

What It's Like To Live In A Well-Governed Country

What It's Like To Live
What makes a country well-run? Whether minimising corruption or spearheading educational and medical initiatives, governments around the world use different policies to facilitate a high-functioning society. To quantify the effectiveness of these policies, indexes like the World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index, the World Bank’s Governance Index and the Social Progress Index survey residents, compile publicly available statistics and rank countries based on their performance across different categories.

While each index varies in their precise ranking, certain patterns emerge across all three, with the same countries consistently at the top for their progressive social policies, trust in government and effective justice system.

A STORY UNFOLDING

By Don Hamaliuk

Laughter is the best medicine, but love may work too
When you are feeling lonely, what would you do
Your phone holds the power, to search someone near
But be careful how you use it, especially with beer

If you’re looking for love, you could make a quick call
Pick one from your list, but don’t pick them all
There is something in beer that releases an emotion
And makes you say things that could cause a commotion

Your mind is not working, the way that it should
So the love that you’re seeking, may not be for the good
That call that you make, in the middle of the night
May be aggravating to someone and the start of a fight

But the beer keeps on working and your emotions grow strong
With strong feelings like this, what could possibly go wrong
Go ahead and continue for the love that you’re after
A story unfolding, that’ll be the fodder for laughter
