Remember That Tick Pic We Ran?

Hi Don,

Remember that tick I pulled off of gal pal Dianne a few weeks back? Well, I just looked at the petri dish on my desk where I have been keeping the tick and it looks like Dianne is a grandmother. I thought it had died but apparently the tick can live up to a couple of years.

Fishing Alberta With Paul C.

On one of my fishing trips I ran across the Tim-Br Mart located on Highway 37 near the town of Onoway. This brand new building features building products, gardening products as well general products. It also has fishing tackle and a good selection as well.

timbur2_jul14_12

I talked with Bob and Erin and they are interested in promoting local business. It turns out that they are the only ones selling tackle in Onoway. They were interested selling my tackle.

I also demonstrated the Bait Button and were quite impressed. They also have coffee and snacks in their coffee shop.

timbur_jul14_12

Located near Onoway, is Salters Lake which has trout to five pounds. The pond is aerated and trout fisherman can enjoy fly fishing all year around. Be careful fishing near the aerator because the ice may be too thin to stand on.

timbur1_jul14_12

Bottom fishing guys use the Wee 18 eggs white or orange. Stop by the store and have a coffee and a quick snack and say hello to the friendly staff.

If you have any questions
please feel free to contact me.

Where Has All Our Innocence Gone?
On the way back from a Cub Scout meeting, my grandson innocently said to my son, 'Dad, I know babies come from mommies' tummies, but how do they get there in the first place?'

After my son hemmed and hawed awhile, my grandson finally spoke up in disgust, 'You don't have to make up something, Dad. It's okay if you don't know the answer.'

Grandchildren Are Special

Grandchildren-are-special-n
A grandfather was delivering his grandchildren to their home one day when a fire truck zoomed past.

Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog's duties.

"They use him to keep crowds back," said one child.

"No," said another. "He's just for good luck."

A third child brought the argument to a close."They use the dogs," she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrants."

Study: Wolverines Need Refrigerators

Study Wolverines
Wolverines live in harsh conditions; they range over large areas of cold mountainous low-productivity habitat with persistent snow.

The paper suggests wolverines take advantage of the crevices and boulders of the mountainous terrain, as well as the snow cover to cache and "refrigerate" food sources such as elk, caribou, moose and mountain goat carrion, ground squirrels and other food collected during more plentiful times of year.

Different Ways Of Looking At Things
While shopping for vacation clothes, my husband and I passed a display of bathing suits. It had been at least ten years and twenty pounds since I had even considered buying a bathing suit, so I sought my husband's advice.

'What do you think?' I asked. 'Should I get a bikini or an all-in-one?'

'Better get a bikini,' he replied. 'You'd never get it all in one.'

He's still in intensive care.

$ervu$ Place Starbucks Turns In Profit

Two days back we ran an email we had sent to city councillor Cam MacKay, copied to all other members of council, requesting a profit and loss statement on the operation to date of the city owned Starbucks outlet in $ervu$ Place.

Councillor MacKay responded that he had indeed made an information request regarding the matter. He then emailed us a copy of city manager's response to his request which read: "
Hi Cam, These results will be included in the 2ndQ corporate report, currently planned for Council on August 27th. Patrick."

Then Councillor Malcolm Parker responded:

Don,

A first quarter 2012 Servus Place Quarterly Report was provided May 9th that included financials for the Starbucks operation which opened late November, 2011. A Q2 report should be forthcoming.

The revenue reflects sales for the first three months of 2012 in the amount of $155,241 (over 30K transactions) vs. budget of $210,000 and expenses (operating costs including wages, lease, fees, supplies, product) of $134,092 vs. budget of $178,400 resulting in an actual net profit of $21,149 vs. budget of $31,600. $10,749 was transferred to reserves for capital construction costs and monthly lifecycle replacement fund. The actual bottom line therefore was an operating profit of $10,400 vs. budget of $20,800.

The quarterly reports are provided to Council and are available on the city web site.

I believe it is important to track performance for each cost center, particularly for a new start up, however it is important to realize in this case the retail operation had only been operating four months based on the May report. A more accurate performance review will be after one year of operation as this factors in such variables as seasonality, 12 month projection comparisons, trends and inclusion of all operating costs such as one time annual expenses. Council will be expecting to receive a first year full performance review in Q1, 2013 and in the interim, receive ongoing quarterly reports to monitor progress.

Based on this information, it would be appropriate to evaluate the operation following one full year of business.

Hope this helps.

Malcolm Parker
Councillor

SINC SAYS:
Thanks for the information Malcolm, I had not seen it reported elsewhere, so it is good to know it is making a profit, but are three month reviews frequent enough for a new venture?

Dennis Meneely (Keyboards)

Dennis is a veteran of the Edmonton music scene dating back to the mid sixties with his first band "WHY US". Like most musicians from that period he was inspired by the Beatles and the whole 'British Invasion'. Along with the music came the progressive rock attitude that he has remained faithful to throughout his career. In 2012 Dennis is a 32-year-member of long running band 'Tacoy Ryde' and a member in good standing with 'Fist Full of Blues' and Cold Feet. He has numerous recording credits dating back to the sixties when he and 'Colored Rain' recorded one of his original songs in Clovis, New Mexico in the same studio where Buddy Holly recorded. His most recent recordings are with Tacoy Ryde, Fist Full of Blues, Doug Jensen, Karl Andriuk and many TV and film submissions. As well as his regular bands, Dennis has toured extensively with Kenny Sheilds/Streethart and 80's rockers Toronto with Holly Woods. He has been in bands and duo's with Lionel Rault, Bobby Cameron, Darrel Barr, Jimmy Whiffen and most recently with band mate Dale Ladouceur. At home he enjoys songwriting, teaching piano and learning jazz standards to perform at seniors residences.

Grandin Park Plaza parkade opens up 250 parking stalls

newsflash

The City of St. Albert and Grandin Park Properties Inc. (Amacon) have signed an agreement that will open up 250 covered parking stalls in the Grandin Park Plaza parkade for weekend and holiday special events held in St. Albert’s downtown.

“It’s important to the City of St. Albert that we have a thriving downtown, where residents and visitors alike can come together and celebrate,” says Mayor Nolan Crouse. “By making it easier for people to find parking, we are encouraging them to visit and do business in downtown St. Albert.”

The agreement with Amacon, which is at no cost to the City, will come into effect later this year for Remembrance Day celebrations (November 11, 2012), as well as the Snowflake Festival (November 30, 2012). In 2013, the agreement includes the following events: Rainmaker Rodeo Parade, Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival, St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce Outdoor Farmers’ Market (Saturdays), Canada Day, Rock’n August, Remembrance Day and the Snowflake Festival.

Temporary public event parking signs will be constructed and put up at Grandin Park Plaza parkade directing people to the available parking spaces during the specific 2012 and 2013 downtown events. The Grandin Park Plaza parkade is located at 22 Sir Winston Churchill Avenue. -

As construction on Riel Park Redevelopment Phases 3 and 4 begins July 23, 2012, motorists on Ray Gibbon Drive will notice an increase in heavy truck traffic and delays due to a temporary road crossing that will be constructed approximately 400 metres south the Sturgeon River bridge.

Until November 30, 2012, trucks will be making about 190 round trips a day hauling approximately 141,000 m³ of clay and 32,800 m³ of topsoil to the Riel Park site. Trucks will use both on- and off-road routes for hauling when travelling to and from the temporary crossing site from three locations:

* west of the Ray Gibbon Drive/LeClair Way intersection

* west side of the Starling Subdivision south of 137th Avenue, west of Ray Gibbon

* northwest corner of Ray Gibbon Drive and Giroux Road

“With the Riel Park Redevelopment adjacent to one of our major thoroughfares, we realize that this construction will be an inconvenience for motorists,” says Jon Cleland, Project Manager, City of St. Albert Capital Projects. “We continue to look for ways to keep the traffic flowing as much as possible, ensure everyone’s safety, yet still get the project done on time and on budget. We ask for motorists’ patience through this construction and that they maintain the posted speed limit.”

Temporary traffic lights at the Ray Gibbon Drive crossing will be controlled and adjusted by a trained flag person during working hours. To ease impact on traffic, starting September 3, trucks will be restricted from using the temporary crossing during peak traffic times (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.). The crossing location will have steel plates on the roadway and these will remain in place during off hours. When workers are not on site, the traffic signals will be in “amber flash” mode and the speed reduction signs posted will still be in effect.

As part of the Riel Park Redevelopment, a portion of the Red Willow Trail will be temporarily closed between Levasseur Road and the Sturgeon River bridge until fall 2013 due to the truck crossing and site redevelopment. Access to Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park and the BLESS platform remains open via Rodeo Drive.

“Motorists and trail users are advised to watch for signs,” adds Cleland.

This project is in the final phases of remediating the old landfill and sewage lagoons at the soccer and rugby fields on 51 and 61 Riel Drive. It involves capping, grading and re-establishing the landscaping of the remaining landfill sections to prevent water from penetrating the landfill and potentially generating leachate. This work will help to protect the Sturgeon River and surrounding environment. Once the cap is in place, the existing playing fields and irrigation system will be reconstructed. During construction, the soccer and rugby fields will be closed. The Riel Park Remediation construction project is expected to be completed by July 2013. Fields will be open for use by August 2014 once the grass has become fully established and ready for play. -

Public Has Right To Know Starbucks Profit Or Loss

Yesterday, we sent the following email to councillor Cam MacKay with a copy to the other six members of city council:

starbucks
Hi Cam,

When city council decided to gamble by investing taxpayers money in a business venture, (Starbucks in Servus Place), did they not also realize they had a responsibility to those taxpayers to release progress reports on how that money is doing as an investment in the public sector?

I think it is time for full public disclosure, now that it has been in operation over six months and request that council be forthwith in providing that information to the public. Any well-run business has such figures at their fingertips every 30 days and the city should be using such accepted business practices.

Would you please be kind enough to put in an information request for the profit or loss statement to date to be pubic at the next council meeting available?

You must agree this is public information, don't you?

Don Sinclair
St. Albert

Cam's Response:

I just asked the question as to when this will be released today (July 15).

Cam MacKay

SINC SAYS:

We note that Cam has 'asked' when administration will release the information. Is that not the tail wagging the dog? Council should instruct administration to release the information, should they not? The public should be made aware how the outlet is progressing and if it is in fact making the anticipated profit council claimed it would of about $90,000 per year. Or will council try and hide the information from the public if they goofed and it is losing money? We can only assume it is losing money if council or administration refuses to release the information.

Flatulence Could Cure High Blood Pressure

Flatulence Could Cure
FLATULENCE could help patients with high blood pressure, a study suggests.

Hydrogen sulphide — a toxic gas generated by bacteria living in the human gut — has been shown to control blood pressure in mice.

Those with higher levels of the gas had lower blood pressure than rodents with less.

Is The City Of St. Albert Survey Accurate?

No_FUD
Hi Folks,

Take a look at the lead in ... go to the link and take a look, and vote on the poll and let them know what you think!
(Here is the link).

Meanwhile, the survey released recently on St. Albert's Place, says something completely different. You may want to look at that as well: June 29, 2012 -
St. Albert's Place On The Web.

It might be worthwhile letting Council know your thoughts as well via these email links:

Lynda Flannery

St. Albert Taxpayers Association

SINC SAYS:

Any survey that claims 99% of folks are satisfied has to be a fixed survey, doesn't it? That is the question on the minds of taxpayers after survey results were released on the city's web site and in the St. Albert Leader. Isn't it time taxpayers called the city's hand on a continuing series of surveys that contains answers to questions designed to make the city look good? Does a quality of life question have anything to do with living under the oppressive tax regime of mayor Crouse and his councils? Asking about their quality of life has everything to do with their incomes and their lifestyles, but nothing to do with where they live. You can have that kind of quality of life in any community if you have the money. Isn't it time Crouse and company asked real questions about real issues?

Akinsdale Residents:

Give Kingswood The Treatment We Got

A story in the St. Albert Leader headed, "Kingswood ASP plans grind to a halt", has some residents of Akinsdale fuming angry.

From the story:

The City of St. Albert wants to develop a park on a combined park and school site on Kingswood Boulevard in the middle of the neighbourhood, but developer Canterra is refusing to hand over the title to the site until guarantees are in place that a high school won’t be built there.

Coun. Cathy Heron has been leading the charge to get a proper park built in Kingswood, but she said that, after attending a public open house on June 19, the message from residents was loud and clear that they did not want the original ASP altered.

“I don’t yet have a solution on how to deal with this issue,” Heron said, “but to take it any further, work any further on this, we would be faced with a gallery full of people at a public hearing highly opposed to what council is trying to do, even though I think our motive in trying to get that park site is a good motive and a true motive.”

"Why does council listen and respond to dozens of Kingswood residents when they completely ignored us and forced slum row housing on us?", they ask. "We too had a gallery full of people attend council meetings, begging them not to ruin our neighbourhood, but that fell on deaf ears."

Good questions to ask, but council will not respond to them. It's a done deal Akinsdale and you're stuck with it.

So then, why is Kingswood being treated differently? In situations like this, one can almost always follow the money. Kingswood is a posh new development that likely generates many more tax dollars than Akinsdale and we wouldn't want to upset the upper class, now would we?

Council is clearly to date setting two different standards for what it apparently sees as two different classes of local residents. Apparently long term quarter-century old areas can be dumped on, but newcomers with money are given special treatment. Or so it would seem. Only council can reverse that impression they are leaving with the people of Akinsdale. "They should treat Kingswood with equal disdain and force their wants on those people too", said one Akinsdale resident to me as I shot the picture of Habitat.

82nd Annual Buck Lake Rodeo Action

Hi Don,

Some snaps from the 82nd annual Buck Lake rodeo. Good crowd, good Duffy stock, long arena, a little too long for the kit I brought along today. Anyway, bulls 12 plus two bullfighters, cowboys zero. Misplaced my program, so no names. Rodeo continues Sunday.

Environment Canada's Official Weather Warning

4:36 AM MDT Sunday 15 July 2012

Rainfall warning for:

City of Edmonton - St. Albert - Sherwood Park issued

Heavy rainfall today and tonight.

A low pressure system has spread rainfall into Central Alberta today. A band of rain has pushed north extending from Whitecourt through Edmonton towards Lloydminster. This band of rain is expected to stall in Central Alberta and then wrap back down to the south as the low pressure system moves off. This will result in significant rainfall accumulations today and tonight in addition to the rainfall that was received overnight. Many areas of Central Alberta received 20 to 30 millimetres of rain overnight with areas west of Edmonton reporting over 50 millimetres. The Edmonton and Drayton Valley regions will likely receive an additional 30-50 millimetres by Monday morning with another 40-60 millimetres of rain expected for the Spruce Grove and Barrhead regions. The rain is expected to taper off Monday morning.
