Inside The Saudi King’s 1,500-Person Entourage In Moscow

Inside The Saudi King’s
Saudi officials booked two entire luxury hotels and brought their own carpets and hotel staff with King Salman bin Abdulaziz on his historic visit.

Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz brought 1,500 people, a golden escalator and his own carpets on his historic, four-day state visit to Russia, a person familiar with the matter said.

The 81-year-old leader of the Gulf kingdom exited his plane late Wednesday and stepped out onto the special escalator he travels with. But something went wrong: It malfunctioned halfway down, and he had to walk the rest of the way. A cavalcade of cars sped the monarch to the center of the city, flanked by Russian police escorts.

Is There A Link Between Sugar And Cancer?

Is There A Link Between Sugar And Cancer?
Scientists have often wondered if there's a link between the amount of sugar we consume and cancer. Can eating too much sugar increase your cancer risk or make cancer cells grow faster if you already have it?

Sugar feeds all the cells in the body — including cancer cells — but research has been divided on what kind of impact it has on cancer growth or cancer risk.

The Mayo Clinic says giving more sugar to cancer cells doesn't speed their growth, and depriving cancer cells of sugar doesn't slow their growth, but the group also issued a caveat.

This Tiny Pub Was Just Named 'Best Restaurant In The World'

This Tiny Pub
When you think of fine dining, restaurants in France and Italy are probably the first that come to mind. But believe it or not, an international poll of customer reviews says that a small English pub tops them all. (If you’ve caught a travel bug, visit one of the weirdest restaurants from around the world, too.)

The Black Swan in Oldstead, North Yorkshire, has been named “the best restaurant in the world,” according to a poll published by TripAdvisor. Rather than using a small panel of judges, TripAdvisor’s ranking considered feedback from restaurant customers, instead. Data crunchers collected millions of reviews and opinions from around the world, which were posted on the TripAdvisor site over a 12-month period. Then, they developed an algorithm that, by factoring in the quantity and quality of the reviews, developed an overall score to rank the worldwide winners.

Traffic Islands On Akins Drive Are Ridiculous
64ACE79E-5940-4D90-A5C2-BD230636DFE8
Whoever is responsible for the mess created on Akins Drive disguised as a safety feature ought to be relieved of traffic planning duties. The street has been narrowed with traffic islands to such an extent that two vehicles can barely pass each other in multiple locations. Two trucks or buses are impossible. The arrows above, drawn from the curb to lane edges show just how drastic the street has been narrowed. Traffic now comes to a complete halt as one vehicle has to wait for another to shoot the narrow gap before it can proceed. Just one more example of administration policy that is killing traffic in this city, neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Constructed under the guise of safe journeys to school, the nearest school to the pictured narrowing is over half a km away.

Petrossian Invents Liquid Caviar

Petrossian Invents Liquid Caviar
In the run-up to end-of-year celebrations, the renowned Parisian gourmet grocer has unveiled a new innovation that features its most famous product, caviar.

Petrossian is planning to take advantage of the end-of-year celebrations to present a surprising innovation that turns a spotlight on its most famous product. The gourmet grocer's latest achievement is an elixir of caviar. For the first time ever, sturgeon roe can be savored in liquid form. Needless to say, Petrossian is quite proud of developing a manufacturing process that has made this possible, but somewhat reluctant to supply step-by-step details of what it entails.

Library Rejected By Nearly
Two To One Margin Against

library result
The public spoke loud and clear against any more planning for a branch library last night in a stunning rejection of the plan with 61.7 percent of voters against any expansion. It is likely a result of the Frank Vagi report which showed the figures promoted by the library board were largely fudged.

The branch library is now dead and it is time to live with what we have and move on. Any attempt to resurrect such a plan would be political suicide for members of St. Albert's new council.

Screen Shot 2017-10-17 at 12.25.21 AM
It will be interesting to see how new mayor Cathy Heron will handle the outright rejection of the project after publicly endorsing the plan with a donation of $1,000 to the YES to the library group.

Heron missed the mark by throwing her support behind the project and will now have to convince library supporters their dream for any expansion is over.

The library expansion never had the support of the public from the day nearly 7,000 people voted in a petition to stop all funding of the $21.9 million dollar project by the library board. The subsequent report conducted by local resident Frank Vagi clearly showed statistics given to council by the library board were far off the mark from the real truth of the library usage claimed.

Screen Shot 2017-10-17 at 12.26.45 AM
The only project council was directed to pursue by the public was a new aquatic centre by a margin of 56 to 41 percent vote in favour. A new ice surface was also rejected by a margin of 50 to 48 percent vote against such a facility.

Screen Shot 2017-10-17 at 12.24.34 AM

'Diet' Avocados Have Half The Fat And Calories, But Do We Need That?

'Diet' Avocados Have
With millennials around the globe smashing avocados on their toast in unprecedented quantities, it's no wonder that someone has come up with a plan to make the fruit even more appealing to the masses. The Spanish fruit company, Eurobanan’s Isla Bonita, recently announced plans to stock store shelves with diet avocados that contain less fat and fewer calories than traditional varieties.

The new fruit, which Isla Bonita calls Avocado Light, has 30 percent less fat than your standard avocados, a claim that has been verified by the Spanish Heart Foundation’s Food Health Programme. The new avocados also ripen faster and maintain their ripeness longer than other brands (characteristics that can be appreciated by anyone who has ever waited a week for an avocado to ripen and then found that it has gone brown and mushy.) The company says the Avocado Light variety will have a mild flavor and all of the creamy dreaminess that avocados are known for.

If you signed the no funding for the library petition, it is important you get out and vote NO to a new branch library. It is equally important you do not support Cathy Heron for mayor. Remember she donated $1,000 to the YES to the library group and that alone makes it likely she would build the branch library in spite of your NO vote.

The First Choice

The First Choice
A young man excitedly tells his mother he's fallen in love and that he is going to get married.

He says, "Just for fun, Ma, I'm going to bring over three women and you try and guess which one I'm going to marry."

The mother agrees.

The next day, he brings three beautiful women into the house and sits them down on the couch and they chat for a while. He then says, "Okay, Ma, guess which one I'm going to marry."

She immediately replies, "The one on the right."

"That's amazing, Ma. You're right. How did you know?"

"I don't like her," replies the mother.

The Tragic Demise Of The Soviets’ ‘Concordski’ That Beat The Concorde To The Skies

The Tragic Demise Of The Soviets’ ‘Concordski’
THE Concorde will go down in history for being an icon of supersonic passenger travel – but it was actually beaten to the skies by a lesser-known jet created by the Russians.

The USSR’s Tupolev Tu-144 looked remarkably similar to its Concorde competitor, when it was unveiled at the Paris Air Show in 1971, earning it the nickname of “Concordski”.

Compared to its Anglo-French counterpart, it was dubbed by its makers as “quieter and cleaner”, and with the Soviet’s aerospace success at the time, commanded initial respect.

During that year, the Soviets had achieved the first probe-landing on Mars and it was unsurprising they would attempt to take on the West in the supersonic passenger travel industry.

The Tupolev Tu-144 beat Concorde to the skies, making its maiden voyage on December 31, 1968 – two months before its competitor.

HOPE IT'S NOT LIKE YOU

By Don Hamaliuk

I do a lot of stupid things; of some I am so proud
Like driving and doing many things while playing my music loud
But I know I’m not the only one; my friends will do that too
Stupid is what stupid does and holds us all like glue

I like this beer I’m drinking, it makes my taste buds tingle
I am so very thirsty and won’t be happy with a single
So now I’m on my sixth one, I really like this brew
Stupid is what stupid does and holds us all like glue

Now hold it just a minute, I think I’ll drink and drive
I’ve only had a couple and I’m sure I will survive
You think I’ve had too many; you can’t tell me what to do
Stupid is what stupid does and holds us all like glue

You’re way more drunk than I am, just get into the car
Our house is just a mile away and that is not too far
I can drive it with my eyes closed, right to our avenue
Stupid is what stupid does and holds us all like glue

Oh my god Sargent Baxter, I really didn’t see that car
Killed my passenger and the others, I guess I went too far
My legs are gone, my life has changed; I’m only twenty-two
Stupid is what stupid does and hope it’s not like you

Well, as for todays Sunday Whatzit?, it makes me wonder
if Bixman isn't a PC Windows user as the shown close up of
a black spiked heat sink was seldom if ever used with Apple
Mac machines that I know of. At least that's what it looks like
to me. -

Saturday Sessions October 21st Presents

This weeks Mark Ammar's Saturday Sessions show 694 presents guest Joe Nolan - While it’s not every day that a songwriter makes it from the shadows of open mic nights to the high wattage, real deal scene, Joe Nolan’s old soul lyrics and striking vocals suggest that the odds of breaking through are in his favour. Joe Nolan’s distinctive and intimate vocals stack the deck. From theramin tremors to raw howls, his range of expression reaches extremes. He delivers bandaged fragility and raw rage with equal impact.

The songs are fervent, pressing and intense. The strength of his debut record, Goodbye Cinderella (2011), earned a nomination for Canadian Folk Music Award Emerging Artist of the Year, a record deal, and a chance to record in Nashville with some of the most respected names in the business, included Colin Linden, Marco Giovino (Robert Plant, Norah Jones) and John Whynot (Lucinda Williams, Blue Rodeo).

So great to have Joe back. His talent and performances caught my attention so much so I snuck him in underage to perform in a club I played in regularly and he mystified the crowd. I'll never forget that afternoon. -
