A Christmas Tradition

A Christmas Tradition
When four of Santa's elves got sick, the trainee elves did not produce toys as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel the Pre-Christmas pressure.

Then Mrs. Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which stressed Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out, Heaven knows where.

Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards cracked, the toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered.

Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum.

When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had drunk all the cider and hidden the liquor.. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider jug, and it broke into hundreds of little glass pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found the mice had eaten all the straw off the end of the broom.

Just then the doorbell rang, and an irritated Santa marched to the door, yanked it open, and there stood a little angel with a great big Christmas tree.

The angel said very cheerfully, 'Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't this a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?'

And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.

Not a lot of people know this.

Cars Were Colourful - Most cars these days look fairly bland, but in the 50's, our cars were big, bright, and fun!

A Critical Analysis of Bob Dylan's 2017 Christmas Lights

A Critical Analysis
Nine years ago I noticed that Bob Dylan, who has a residence in my neighborhood of Malibu, California, had begun to decorate the hedge outside his vast estate with a single string of Christmas lights. It was probably not a coincidence that he was also about to release a Christmas album.

Immediately I was taken by his decidedly casual approach to seasonal decorating. The display was made all the more distinct by the fact that the dominant style of decorating in the rest of the neighborhood could be characterized as “four Star restaurant courtyard.” The more I stared at his work, the more it spoke to me. “I was put here by someone who didn’t want to waste time doing this,” is what it seemed to say.

Pics on Vice.

A Happy Crowd

A Happy Crowd
The Pope and Trudeau are on the same stage in the new Edmonton Arena in front of a huge crowd.

The Pope leans towards Trudeau and said “Do you know that with one little wave of my hand I can make every person in this crowd go wild with joy? This joy will not be a momentary display, but will go deep into their hearts and they’ll forever speak of this day and rejoice!”

Trudeau replies, “I seriously doubt that? With one little wave of your hand? … Show me!”

So the Pope backhanded him and knocked him off the stage!

The crowd roared and cheered wildly and there was happiness throughout the land!

Why Your Christmas Lights Always Get Tangled, According to Science

Why Your Christmas Lights
A Christmas tree isn't a Christmas tree without those pretty colored lights, right? OK, no problem. You stored them in a box marked "Xmas lights" 11 months ago. You know where the box is. Now you just have to open the box, grab the lights, and—

That's where it gets tricky. Unless you're very lucky, or extremely well organized, the lights are likely all tangled up; soon you're down on your hands and knees, struggling to untangle a spaghetti-like jumble. (And it's not just you: A couple of years ago, the British grocery chain Tesco hired temporary "Christmas light untanglers" for the holiday season.) But why are Christmas lights so prone to tangling in the first place—and can anything be done about it?

More on Mental Floss.

The Week Before Christmas

The Week Before Christmas
The week before Christmas can kill you. You can be a victim or a survivor. It’s up to you.

Day 7

If you are a victim, you call everyone in the family and try to arrange the five Ws. Who is going to come to our house? What are you going to bring? When should everyone show up? Where are we going to put everybody? Why does Uncle Eddie have to be invited?

If you are a survivor, you don’t call everyone in the family. You let them phone you and say, “We’ve decided as a family to enjoy our own Christmas this year. We’ll see you in 2018.” Thanks to call-display, you don’t have to pick up when irate Uncle Eddie tries to ring you.

See the rest of the week in the Halifax Citizen.

The Hero Pig

The Hero Pig
A man is taking a country drive one afternoon just enjoying the sights and smells of the rural life. He sees an old country store and pulls in for a coke.

The store seems to have anything and everything for sale, and he sees an old man next to the counter, apparently the owner.

Beside him lies a pig with his left leg missing and a gold medal on a ribbon around his neck . "Is that pig a pet?" he asked the owner.

"A pet and a hero." answers the owner."When we had the tornado five years past, he came running, broke down the sty and rescued four of the family."

"Amazing" the man said, "Is that how he lost his leg?"

"Naw" said the owner "That's where he got his first hero ribbon. Then there was the time the house caught a-fire and that time, he rescued the baby and two other kids. That's where he got the medal he's wearing".

The man finally asks "Well tell me, how did he lose the leg?"

The owner considers the man a minute and answers, "Well. it's like this mister, you don't eat a pig like that all at once."

Forget Petrol! Vehicles Could Run On Renewable Fuel Made From Beer By 2022

Forget Petrol! Vehicles
Scientists have managed to create fuel from beer in a move that could end our reliance on petrol.

Chemists at the University of Bristol achieved the feat by converting widely-available ethanol found in beer into butanol.

They say it won't be long before we see cars running on new type of fuel, with experts predicting it could be the main fuel source for transportation by 2022.

Sad Birthday Of Big Marijuana In Colorado

Sad Birthday Of Big
Last week marked the fifth anniversary of Colorado's decision to sanction the world's first anything-goes commercial pot trade.

Five years later, we remain an embarrassing cautionary tale.

Visitors to Colorado remark about a new agricultural smell, the wafting odor of pot as they drive near warehouse grow operations along Denver freeways. Residential neighborhoods throughout Colorado Springs reek of marijuana, as producers fill rental homes with plants.

Five years of retail pot coincide with five years of a homelessness growth rate that ranks among the highest rates in the country. Directors of homeless shelters, and people who live on the streets, tell us homeless substance abusers migrate here for easy access to pot.

Details in the Colorado Springs Gazette.

Puppies! Ya Gotta Love 'Em

FF9rsfd0YJRYjYvzrqgnl03N8e_slvUGPnjTVqWPPt4

We Love Our Dogs. Should We Cook For Them?

We Love Our Dogs
Food is love. It’s why your family gets together for your favorite meal when you come home, and why your beloved brings you breakfast in bed, or why your friends buy you doughnuts and drinks on your birthday. When you feed someone, it’s a sign you care about their well-being, that you want them to continue to live, and to enjoy life. What is a greater expression of love than that?

I don’t think any dog owner—myself included—would deny that our dogs are the great loves of our lives, our faithful companions. My dog, Abby, knows that I would do anything for her, not only because I frequently tell her, but also because she will occasionally test me by asking not very politely to go outside at 3 a.m. in the middle of winter or demanding we take another turn around the block when I’m all ready to head home. And I always comply, because her pain is my pain, and her happiness is my happiness. Or something like that.

CONFUSED AND UNCERTAIN

By Don Hamaliuk

They’ve got me hoping, that things will get better
But it scares me so much; I’m a constant fretter
If this doesn’t kill me, it might make me stronger
But I’m not so sure, I can holdout much longer

Mental illness is much too common, in our lives
Affecting our children, husbands and wives
There is no telling when this affliction takes hold
Chemical intervention is necessary; I’m told

There may be more ways, of injecting some hope
In the lives of the needy, along with the dope
A job, a career, a stronger circle of friends
The hope can be endless, if the search never ends

It sounds so simple, but the need is so strong
The feeling as if nothing, in life can go wrong
Still confused and uncertain, of what I should do
I need you to help me and I’m counting on you

Give me a strong purpose, to get up every day
Someone to look up to and show me the way
I just need some guidance, to get me out of this mess
Your encouragement and acceptance, may give me success

* Morning, Don. The first thing I thought of when seeing the

people doing this out west during the bitterly cold days of
winter. -

sunny day. -

The Fee Question

The Fee Question
A farmer drives to a neighbour’s farmhouse and knocks on the door

A boy, about 9, opens the door.

"Is your Dad or Mom home?" asks the farmer.

"No, they went to town."

"How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?"

"No, he went with Mom and Dad."

The farmer stands there for a few minutes, shifting his weight from one foot to the other, mumbling to himself.

The young boy finally says, "I know where all the tools are if you want to borrow one. If that’s not why you’re here, I can give Mom or Dad a message."

"Well." The farmer looks extremely uncomfortable. "I need to talk to your Dad about your brother, Howard, getting my daughter, Suzy, pregnant.".

The boy tilts his head to the side and thinks about that for a moment. "You will have to talk to my Dad about that.” He decides. “I know he charges $50 for our bulls to service other folks' cows and he charges $15 for our boars to service other folks' sows. I have no idea how much he charges for Howard.”

Words From The Grave

The Part Of My Dad That Dementia Can't Take

The Part Of My Dad
My dad, Piet, has Alzheimer’s disease. He is one of thousands.

Alzheimer’s is one of the most common forms of dementia. It means that cells in my father’s brain no longer work as they should. Some of his older memories remain but his dementia is creating dark edges around many of them, rendering them unreachable, disjointed and confusing fragments that he can no longer routinely piece together.

I’m not writing this to incite pity for him or his family. He would never want that. But he would want us to better understand a disease that is killing off so many important neurons and changing his behaviour irreversibly.

Earlier in his diagnosis, I asked him what his dementia felt like. He told me it was as if a shadow or cloud was constantly following him around. He said that he wasn’t scared of what was happening to him. Accepting it made it easier to live with.

But as the disease took away more of his independence, his love of music persisted. My dad was the one who introduced me to 70s rock music, took a (somewhat reluctant) teenaged me to the opera and used to blast classical music around the house.
