Small Town Used Cars

Small Town Used Cars
It was a small town and the patrolman was making his evening rounds. As he was checking a used car lot, he came upon two little old ladies sitting in a used car.

He stopped and asked them why they were sitting there in the car or were they trying to steal it?

“Heavens no, we bought it.”

“Then why don't you drive it away.”

“We can't drive.”

“Then why did you buy it?”

“We were told that if we bought a used car here, we'd get screwed, so we're just waiting.”

Mushrooms Can Help Clean The World

Mushrooms Can Help
Mushrooms, which have quietly been breaking down dead plants for millennia, are finally getting recognized as the multitalented superstars they are. As if cycling important nutrients back into the soil so new life can flourish isn't enough, it turns out that the humble fungi can perform lots of other useful tasks.

Mushroom mycelium, the branch-like filaments in a fungus, can be grown into a multitude of shapes, paving the way for them to replace plastics for packaging, furniture and even car parts. Products made with mushrooms use far fewer resources to manufacture, considering mushrooms don't need light or other power supplies to grow. And unlike plastics, they're biodegradable. They also can be made into building materials, fabric for clothing and might be the key to fighting antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Frazil Ice On Yosemite Creek

In April 2009, I shot a frazil ice flood event on Yosemite Creek in Yosemite National Park. Frazil Ice forms on several Yosemite waterfalls whenever temperatures go below freezing. Although it can happen any time throughout the winter, late March and April are the most likely months.

A Smart Old Guy

A Smart Old Guy
An elderly man in Louisiana had owned a large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back. It was properly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it up nice with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple and peach trees.

One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. He grabbed a five-gallon bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond.

He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, 'we're not coming out until you leave!'

The old man frowned, 'I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked.'

Holding the bucket up he said, 'I'm just here to feed the alligator.'

This Is Why You Should Never Hold In A Sneeze

This Is Why You Should
A recently released case report, courtesy of the BMJ, reaffirms one of life’s important lessons: Don’t try to hold back a sneeze. Especially, don’t do it by plugging up your nose and mouth—you just might end up in the emergency room with a gaping hole in your throat.

The report details an otherwise healthy 34-year-old man in the UK who felt a popping, painful sensation in his throat immediately following a sneeze he had tried to stop by sealing off his mouth and nose. By the time the man made it to the ER, he had lost his voice and was barely able to swallow. When doctors first examined him, they also heard crackling sounds that ran from his neck all the way down to the ribcage.

The Incident At Mundare

The Incident At Mundare
One dark night outside Mundare, a small town East of Edmonton, Alberta, a fire started inside the local sausage plant and in a blink it exploded into massive flames. The alarm went out to all the fire departments from miles around. When the local volunteer fire fighters appeared on the scene, the sausage company president rushed to the fire chief and said, "All of our secret formulas are in the vault in the centre of the plant. They must be saved and I will give $50,000 to the fire department that brings them out intact." But the roaring flames held the firefighters off.

Soon more fire departments from surrounding towns had to be called in as the situation became desperate. As the firemen arrived, the president shouted out that the offer was now $100,000 to the fire department who could bring out the company's secret files. Then, from a distance, a lone siren was heard as one more fire truck came into sight. It was the nearby Smoky Lake rural township volunteer fire department composed mainly of Ukrainians over the age of 65. To everyone's amazement, the little run-down fire engine, operated by these Ukrainians, passed all the newer sleek engines parked outside the plant and drove straight into the middle of the inferno.

Outside, the other firemen watched as the Ukrainian old timers jumped off and began to fight the fire from the inside with a performance and effort never seen before. Within a short time, the Smoky Lake old-timers had extinguished the fire and saved the secret formulas.

The grateful sausage company president joyfully announced that for such a superhuman feat he was upping the reward to $200,000, and walked over to personally thank each of the brave, though elderly, Ukrainian firefighters. The Edmonton TV news reporters rushed in after capturing the event on film, asking, "What are you going to do with all that money?"

"Vell," said Nick Sputski, the 70-year-old fire chief, "da furst thing vee gonna do is fix da brakes on dat frigging trock."

Is This Housing Solution Just A Pipe Dream?

Is This Housing Solution
As Hong Kong continues to grapple with an affordable housing crisis of epic proportions, no potential solution, no matter how unconventional or quixotic, is overlooked. And this includes single-occupancy dwellings fashioned out of concrete water pipes.

While we’ve seen concrete pipes transformed into cozy little overnight digs before, this is the first time that repurposed water/sewage infrastructure has been proposed as a creative response to Hong Kong’s dearth of available land to build new, low-cost housing. Previous outside-the-box housing ideas for the ultra-densely populated city have included tucking shipping container villages under highway overpasses and establishing subterranean cavern homes.

Cape Town Is About To Run Out Of Water

Cape Town Is About
We’ve seen modern cities grapple with historic, seemingly never-ending droughts before. That, unfortunately, is nothing new.

But the situation now unfolding in Cape Town, South Africa, is something new: a major city — a thriving global tourism destination, at that — on the cusp on running dry with no signs of relief in sight.

For the 3.7 million-some residents in metro Cape Town, South Africa’s oldest and second most populous urban area, "Day Zero" — the date the city’s depleted reservoirs are expected to officially hit empty — is inching forward at an alarming speed. Day Zero was initially calculated to occur on April 29 and, before that, sometime in May. But on Jan. 8, Mayor Patricia De Lille pushed the date forward to April 22. If that date holds, Cape Town will become the first major city on the planet to run out of useable drinking water — and on Earth Day of all days.

♦ Money can't buy happiness, but it keeps the kids in touch!

♦ The reason Mayberry was so peaceful and quiet was because nobody was married. Andy, Aunt Bea, Barney, Floyd, Howard, Goober, Gomer, Sam, Earnest T Bass, Helen, Thelma Lou, Clara and, of course, Opie, were all single. The only married person was Otis and he stayed drunk.

The Tattooist Of Auschwitz - And His Secret Love

The Tattooist Of Auschwitz
For more than 50 years, Lale Sokolov lived with a secret - one born in the horrors of wartime Europe, in a place that witnessed some of the worst of man's inhumanity to man.

It would not be shared until he was in his 80s, thousands of miles from that place.

Lale had been the Tattooist of Auschwitz.

Living out his life in a suburb of Melbourne, the man who had been born Ludwig "Lale" Eisenberg to Jewish parents in Slovakia in 1916 decided to share his story.
"This man, the tattooist from the most infamous concentration camp, kept his secret safe in the mistaken belief that he had something to hide," says Heather Morris, who spent three years recording Lale's story before he died in 2006.

She has now written a book - The Tattooist of Auschwitz - based on what happened to him in the Second World War.

*
Don. A strange Whatzit pic today. All I can think
of is that a pair of them are placed in an
old-fashioned fire place and that a metal rod is
placed in the circle at the top and a cast iron pot
is suspended from the rod. -

I’ve seen something like this before when I
lived in the country ..... it looks like a boot
scraper. -

* Well, I'm behind on my Sunday schedule
today and finally got to read SAP, and as crazy
as it might sound, I'm going to say today's whatzit?
is a long handle antique country cast iron or brass
doorstopper. It also looks like it might be missing
something with the empty hole over the pigs rump.
Or maybe it's just the photo that makes it look that
way. -

Irish Ghost Story

Irish Ghost Story
John Bradford, a Dublin University student, was on the side of the road hitch-hiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a big storm. The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him.

Suddenly, he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stopped. John, desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got into the car and closed the door ... only to realize there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn't running.

The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road ahead and saw a curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life. Then, just before the car hit the curve, a hand appeared out of nowhere through the window, and turned the wheel. John, paralyzed with terror, watched as the hand came through the window, but never touched or harmed him.

Shortly thereafter, John saw the lights of a pub appear down the road, so, gathering strength, he jumped out of the car and ran to it. Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everybody about the horrible experience he had just had.

A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realized he was crying ... and wasn't drunk.

Suddenly, the door opened, and two other people walked in from the dark and stormy night. They, like John, were also soaked and out of breath. Looking around, and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, one said to the other ... ‘Look Paddy ... there's that idiot that got in the car while we were pushing it!'

Steve McQueen’s Missing ‘Bullitt’ Mustang Is Found And Unveiled Alongside A New Ford ‘Bullitt’

Steve McQueen’s Missing
The star of arguably cinema’s greatest chase was long (thought to be) lost, but it’s actually been in a New Jersey garage for a few decades.

In 1968, as his celebrity was cresting, Steve McQueen produced and starred in Bullitt. He had been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor the year before for his dramatic role in The Sand Pebbles. But in the crime thriller, he played a tough San Francisco police detective, Frank Bullitt, who was battling a mob boss. The movie was moody and noir-ish, and a well-reviewed box-office hit.

But despite all of this—and co-stars Robert Vaughn, Robert Duvall, and Jacqueline Bisset—Bullitt is recalled today mainly for its car chase, a 10-minute masterpiece (See below) shot in and around San Francisco, and completed in a souped-up, Highland Green, 1968 Ford Mustang fastback (and a 1968 Dodge Charger). The scene helped the movie win the Oscar that year for film editing.
