St. Albert Kinsmen Rodeo With Al Popil

Hi Don, Some snaps from last night’s opener of the St. Albert Kinsmen rodeo. Good stock, good weather, good rides (rodeo) tonight. Off to bed, I want an early start tomorrow so I can take in the Lumberjack show (very entertaining) and Dynamo Dogs (something I haven’t seen much of). Rodeo continues at 2:00 p.m. today (Saturday) and 1:00 p.m. Sunday. Al.

St. Albert Kinsmen Rodeo 2017 - unknown - al popil

St. Albert Kinsmen Rodeo 2017 - Italo Aguilar - al popil
Brazilian cowboy, Italo Aguilar, gets horned by Double Up after a buck off.

Rainmaker Rodeo With Richard Wear

St. Albert’s Place is blessed to have two very talented local rodeo photographers and for those of you who could not attend the rodeo, they put you right in front of the action. Richard Wear sent along these shots for our readers to enjoy. Thanks to both Al and Richard for their efforts at rodeo coverage, without a doubt the best in the city.

An elderly couple in their seventies were about to get married.

A Roving Reporter Tour Part Two

Jane’s Walks Through Edmonton

This walk, Sunday May 21 took us to River Lot 26 which originally covered from 118th Ave. down to the ravine south of 111 Ave. across from Borden Park. Learned about Edmonton's Lower Settlement, and an important pioneer family who lived on River Lot 26 from 1871-1924. Who were James and Sarah Kirkness?

Ramblings Of A Tired Mind

Ramblings Of A Tired Mind
- I was in a store that sells sunglasses, and only sunglasses. A young lady walked over to me and asked, "What brings you in today?" I looked at her, and said, "I'm interested in buying a refrigerator.” She didn't quite know how to respond. Am I getting to be that age?

- I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped onto their belt or purse. I can't afford one. So I'm wearing my garage door opener.

China Doesn't Understand The Concept Of American Chinese Food

China Doesn't Understand
If you're a Westerner, even if the closest you've got to Asian culture is stumbling across the Great Wall on Google Earth, you know that Chinese people don't crack open fortune cookies after every meal. And as a Brit living in Shanghai since a year ago, I can confirm that rather than sweet and sour chicken, most Chinese people prefer a nice pile of crispy chicken feet.

In fact, as the wonderfully named former New York Times reporter Jennifer 8. Lee pointed out in her 2008 TED Talk, most Chinese people don't even know what chop suey actually is. Since Chinese food first began being served in the USA in the 19th century, it has had generations to evolve and suit US tastes, so much so that it's completely disconnected to traditional dishes served in China, both now and then.

Story on Munchies.

Only The Irish
Gallagher is in Boston and he is waiting patiently, also, he is watching the traffic cop on a busy street crossing.

The cop stops the flow of traffic and shouts, 'Okay pedestrians'. Then he allows the traffic to pass. He did this several times, and Gallagher is still standing on the sidewalk.

After the cop has shouted 'Pedestrians' for the tenth time, Gallagher approaches him and says, 'Is it not about time ye let the Catholics across?'

Scientists Solve Mystery Of Narwhals Tusks

Scientists Solve Mystery
Never-seen-before footage of the narwhal has revealed an aspect of their physiology which has caused much debate: the ‘horn’ protruding from their heads.

Scientists have long speculated about the reason for its existence – from use as an ice pick or weapon to sexual selection and even echolocation.

One theory of how these whales use their tusks has finally been confirmed.

A SAP Editorial

Now THIS Is A Smart City

stat

Unlike St. Albert where buses cruise the city all day for the most part empty, the Ontario town of Innisfil has solved their public transportation needs by partnering with Uber.

You can read details of the deal they made with Uber
here.

Now if only our council could live up to its ‘smart city’ claim and do the same here. Imagine ridding ourselves of most of our bus fleet and the hefty expense to keep it running.

uber
Simply keep enough buses to meet the needs of the Edmonton routes and get rid of the rest. That would leave the only buses on the roads the ones during rush hour to the university and other Edmonton stops where they operate at capacity.

Gone would be those empty buses that irritate so many tax payers as they run around town without any passengers in them all day.

Can a so-called ‘smart city’ suddenly become smart? In St. Albert’s case we think not, but we can suggest they investigate the opportunity. A combined system would be a win-win for local resident’s pocketbooks.

The Government Guys

The Government Guys
Two government maintenance guys, were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up. A woman walked by and asked what they were doing.

"We're supposed to find the height of the flagpole”, they said, "But we don't have a ladder."

The woman said, "Hand me that wrench out of your toolbox." She loosened a few bolts, then laid the pole down.

She then took a tape measure from their toolbox, took a measurement and announced, "Eighteen feet, six inches" and walked away.

One shook his head and laughed. "Well, ain't that just like a 'Miss-know-it-all' woman?" he said. "We need the height and she gives us the length!"

They are both still working for the Notley NDP government.

Shifting Sands: Vanished Irish Beach Makes Comeback 30 Years On

Shifting Sands
A County Mayo beach that disappeared more than 30 years ago has made a miraculous comeback.

Dooagh beach on Achill Island in the west of Ireland, was washed away in 1984 after storms hit the area.
But in April, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sand were dumped back on the coastline during a freak tide, bringing the beach back to its former glory.

Thousands of tourists visit the area every year and having a new 300-metre long beach has delighted residents.

A Roving Reporter Tour Part One

Jane’s Walks Through Edmonton
01 DSCF8711
This walk, Sunday May 21 took us to River Lot 26 which originally covered from 118th Ave. down to the ravine south of 111 Ave. across from Borden Park. Learned about Edmonton's Lower Settlement, and an important pioneer family who lived on River Lot 26 from 1871-1924. Who were James and Sarah Kirkness?

03 DSCF8714
Our guides, Jim and Melanie, who happen to live in the neighbourhood were incredible, so much information right at their finger tips. Our group included a two week old baby and a mix of other ages up to 70+, and all came prepared for a longish walk.

04 DSCF8716 05 DSCF8717
Who knew there is such a steep ravine in that area, where some of the original inhabitants had coal mines? Some well maintained gravel paths, paved bike trails and steep stairs wander through the ravine. They are deservedly proud of the ravine and regularly patrol it looking for garbage.

Bird Brains Not So Stupid: Pigeons Show Human-Like Ability To Build Knowledge Through Generations

Bird Brains Not So Stupid
Having, literally, bird brains, pigeons are not generally considered to be the most intelligent of creatures.

But new research reveals that in a crucial respect they are more like humans than any other.

Scientists at Oxford University found that homing pigeons are the only known species in the world other than humans able to build and pass on wisdom across the generations.

The High Costs Of Living In St Albert

The High Costs Of Living In St Albert
Editor:

With reference to the Gazette special commentary,
‘New branch library a necessity’, it's great that Ms. Hamilton is taking an active part in the politics of the city.

Further to her commentary, there is no argument that libraries are a fundamental part of any city.

It's unfortunate not all programs some residents and employees feel are important can be accommodated at the existing library. Every building has limitations and the library is no exception. The argument is whether we can afford another one.

Perhaps if the city were more financially prudent when it came to spending tax dollars we would be able to afford another library le: colourful painted crosswalks, removing snow from boulevards, spending $35 million on the Riel reclamation that was not required, the $8 million football field, the $3 million football clubhouse, the $3 million .road to nowhere, hiring 25-30 new employees every year, and running empty buses throughout the city from 9 a.m, to 4 p.m. costing taxpayers upwards of $5 million per year.

We are already heavily taxed, and the branch library will increase taxes more than 3.80% per year.

It's easy to spend other people's money. This comment is also directed to all the city employees who petition for more and more dollars for their special interests, but reside elsewhere, and don't pay city taxes.

Hopefully when Ms. Hamilton becomes a full time employee and a financially contributing resident, she will witness first hand the high costs of living in St Albert and realize there are limits to what residents can afford.

Walking The Dog

Walking The Dog
A man walking a big dog walks silently down the street, followed by a hearse and a single file line of 300 men silently walking behind the coffin.

A man approaches the last person in line and asked what's going on, the guy says "I don't know, ask the guy in front of me".

The guy in front of him said " I don't know, ask the guy in front of me".

And so the man asks and asks until he reaches the pallbearers who tell him that it's the funeral for the mother in law of the guy with the dog.

He approaches the guy with the dog and asks what's going on. The guy whispers that this dog killed his mother in law and that's why there's a funeral today.

“Sweet!” Said the man, “Can I borrow your dog?”

“Get in line”, said the guy with the dog.

Just What We Needed
It is getting hot this week in the east of North America, going up to to the high eighties (°F, 303°K, 30°C) in New York. Backpacks can make you feel even hotter, as they insulate your back and prevent evaporation of sweat, so you end up wet and sticky.

So call up the Japan Trend Shop and order your Kucho Air-Conditioned Backpack Cooling Pack.

ST. ALBERT TRAFFIC FRUSTRATIONS

By Don Hamaliuk

Driving through St. Albert, is frustrating at best
The wait time at light signals will put us to the test
The Engineers that work them, must not be from our town
Or if they are their humour, is similar to a clown

They must have taken courses to slow the pace of travel
Laughing all the while, knowing our patience would unravel
They would do well to take another course, to get the traffic moving
To synchronize and time the lights, would be so calm and soothing

So I ask them so politely, if they are reading this
Proper program all left turn signals and we would be in bliss
They are needed at the peak times, but not so much at night
Spend some time on moving traffic, you know that would be right

The Sunday Whatzit?

READER GUESSES:

Don, I actually may know what the Whatzit is .... is it a banana
gourd? -

*
And yes that Whatzit? today seems to be a Momordica charantia,
or better known as a bitter melon or bitter gourd and a few other
names, I believe. Not often or ever found in one's local store's
produce section. -

The Deaf Italian Bookkeeper

The Deaf Italian Bookkeeper
A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper, Guido, has cheated him out of $10,000,000.00. His bookkeeper is deaf. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that Guido would hear nothing so he would not have to testify in court.

When the Godfather goes to confront Guido about his missing $10 million, he takes along his lawyer who knows sign language.

The Godfather tells the lawyer, "Ask him where the money is!" The lawyer, using sign language, asks Guido, "Where's the money" Guido signs back, "I don't know what you are talking about."

The lawyer tells the Godfather, "He says he doesn’t know what you're talking about."

The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to Guido's head and says, "Ask him again, if he doesn’t tell I'll kill him!"

The lawyer signs to Guido, "He'll kill you if you don't tell him." Guido trembles and signs, "OK! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed at my cousin Bruno's house".

The Godfather asks the lawyer, "What did he say?"

The lawyer replies, "He says screw you, you don't have the balls to pull the trigger."

When TV Logos Were Physical Objects

It goes without saying that nearly everything made with graphic design and video software was once produced using a physical process, from newspapers to TV Logos. But some TV stations and film studios took things even further and designed physical logos that were filmed to create dynamic special effects. Arguably the most famous of which is MGM’s Leo the Lion which first appeared in 1916 and would go on to include 7 different lions over the decades.

Recently, television history buff Andrew Wiseman unearthed this amazing behind-the-scenes shot of the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française logo from the early 1960s that was constructed with an array of strings to provide the identity with a bright shimmer that couldn’t be accomplished with 2D drawings. The logo could also presumably be filmed from different perspectives, though there’s no evidence that was actually done.

More on Colossel, with thanks to Mark in Zacatecas, México for sending along this one.
