Pileated Woodpecker Hard At Work

These shot were taken at Whitemud Creek Park in Edmonton. To get these close ups I had to sit very still making slow motions and being very quiet as well. This bird had only looked at me once and was busy trying to get grubs out of the tree.

Notice the size of the wood chips falling down (see arrows top near centre bottom and above left). I took about 40 photos and edited down to 10 that I was happy with.
Fishermen waiting for the main lakes to become ice free can start heading to your local trout ponds as most of them are just about ice free. Trout Ponds are open all year around.
Remember to check your fishing regulations before heading to any lake. I always carry a copy of the regulations in my van. The guide is free of charge and ask for it when you buy or renew your fishing license.
I would also suggest you remember to pinch your barbs on the hook because the fine is over $200.
Last weekend I made a trip to Heritage Lake (Morinville reservoir) and fish were striking on the edge of the ice in 10 feet or less water.
A wise elder said to me that the fish are always under the surface of the water and asked me to share this with everybody.
Now that's sound fishin' advice.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Let The City Know What You Think
The Social Master Plan is next up on Council's agenda and will be talked about at the May 30th Council Town Hall meeting. Here is a link to the questionnaire about the social master plan.
THIS IS SOMETHING SIMPLE
THAT YOU CAN DO.
And, these things are important as they show the interest in the community in putting forward spending ideas. If you choose not to SAY otherwise, then Council will think everyone in SA is for spending oodles of money on new programs. We just saw this happen in the Recreation and Cultural Master plans which were recently blessed by Council.
As with all these surveys, they are designed to elicit particular answers. BUT there are a few areas labeled OTHER where you can say what is important to you. I put that while social issues are important, my answers do not mean I approve of a whole bunch more spending, and that spending levels are high enough on a lot of these issues. Another responder commented high taxes and fiscal responsibility were important. What you say is up to you.

Residents Soundly Reject Art Gallery Funding
The people have spoken and the results are not good for the Art Gallery of St. Albert. From our informal survey, council would be ill-advised to give any more funds the the Arts and Heritage Foundation for anything, never mind a sweeping remodel of its art gallery. The gallery is very low on the priority list of local residents and most never use it at all. It would appear the St. Albert Gazette editorial was right on the money: St. Albert does not have to have an art gallery Here is a look at the outcome:

Arts Gallery Responds To Request For Facts
Hello Don,
Thanks for your message. I can clarify a few points via email.
Yesterday our Administrative Assistant sent an event notice to a regular email list, which is comprised of individual and family memberships, dignitaries such as city council and government officials, administrators, business owners, organizations and suppliers. It looks like the choice of words could have been different, to perhaps better convey what was intended.
The invitation is open to all, so the message that it is only for a select group is not accurate. Quite the opposite. The invitation is especially to people who may not know much about our city's public art gallery, programs, events, the heritage site and history (ie. Banque d'Hochelaga built in 1920 and the International Style addition in 1966), and the work in building community. Invitations are posted on social media, distributed by email, mail, by hand. The Gazette is running the gallery open house info on their ‘What’s On’ section of next Wednesday’s paper and invitations are sent
The vision and info has already been presented in different formats, to council members, at council chambers April 2, through newspaper articles, websites, email and with visitors. First-hand experiences and visuals may bring greater understanding, so participating in gallery programs and events is encouraged.
A written source for info is the website.
Please also see recent articles such as this from the Gazette.
And this from the Leader.
It would be great to have you visit some time. The current exhibit runs until Saturday, and the next begins next Thursday with the first Art Walk of the season and the 17th annual High Energy show, with students from five St. Albert high schools. The reception is open to everyone, May 3, 6-9 pm; this show brings many families, grandparents and friends of students together, as well as the hundreds of people who walk through downtown, art walk venues and businesses.
Best regards,

Art Gallery Of St. Albert Survey
Since it is taxpayers who must foot the bill if council approves a nearly $5 million expenditure for the Accessibility Project, we thought we should ask local residents for their opinion on what the gallery means to them in their everyday lives in this city. Please provide your answers to the five questions below to gauge the value received for money spent on such a project. Since we don't want one person's opinion to influence another, the poll results will remain hidden until we release them tomorrow morning. A reminder there are FIVE questions. Many are only answering the first two of them for some reason.

The Black Bra
27/04/2012 04:54

We were chatting about our relationships and decided to amaze our men by greeting them at the door wearing a black bra, stiletto heels and a mask over our eyes. We agreed to meet in a few days to exchange notes on what would happen.
Here's how it all went.
My engaged friend :
The other night when my boyfriend came over he found me with a black leather bodice, tall stilettos and a mask. He saw me and said, 'You are the woman of my dreams. I love you.' Then we made passionate love all nightlong.
The mistress:
Me too! The other night I met my lover at his office and I was wearing a raincoat, under it only the black bra, heels and mask over my eyes. When I opened the raincoat he didn't say a word, but he started to tremble and we had wild sex all night.
Then I had to share my story:
When my husband came home I was wearing the black bra, black stockings, stilettos and a mask over my eyes. When he came in the door and saw me he said, "What's for dinner, Zorro?"

An Open Request To Arts and Heritage, St. Albert
It has been brought to our attention that the Art Gallery of St. Albert is holding an open house May 5 and has invited a select group of local citizens to attend to "find out the FACTS about the Art Gallery Accessibility Project", and you as Administrative Assistant, Arts and Heritage, St. Albert have been informing residents the 'FACTS' will be available at the open house.
As St. Albert's daily news and information site, we too are interested in those 'FACTS' that you mention in your email to local citizens. So, for the record, what exactly are those 'FACTS'?
Since it is public money you want to build an edifice when council merely wanted your group to provide a proposal for handicapped accessibility, we strongly feel the public has a right to know these 'FACTS'.
Thanks in advance for your response to this email which has been presented to the public on our website this morning.

We sent this email to Suellen Pineau, Administrative Assistant, Arts and Heritage, St. Albert early today in response to an email leaked to SAP that she has been sending to a 'select few' citizens of the community. Since any spending on the 'Art Gallery Accessibility Project' will come out of the pockets of every taxpayer, not just that select few, we are asking publicly for the supposed 'FACTS' that Arts and Heritage refer to in their invitation. Every local taxpayer deserves access to whatever they are trying to present to that select few in a by-invitation-only setting. Arts and Heritage are playing their cards close to their chest and it's time the dealer called and asked they to lay those cards on the table. Or do they too, like the city of St. Albert Starbucks affair, have facts to be kept hidden from the public?

Leftovers: The Alberta Election
The Don,
According to Elections Alberta the voter turnout on Monday was 57 per cent.
That means that more than four out of 10 eligible voters stayed home. That, combined with the fact that a full 56 per cent of those who did vote wanted the Tories out – and that’s not even taking into account all the NDPers, Liberals and others (like me) who voted PC not only to keep the Wildrose out, but also to keep “certain candidates” in their respective ridings out.
Could have made a big difference if those people had voted. Just sayin’ . . .
Cheers,
Jim Starko

Part of the problem could be solved by tossing out our antiquated 'First Past the Post' method of elections where parties unwanted by the majority gain a majority government. A proportional representation system would have given us a PC minority government, as it should be.
Whatzit?
St. Albert's Place reader Bixman has a puzzle picture for you to solve, so whatzit?

Leftovers: The Alberta Election

According to Elections Alberta the voter turnout on Monday was 57 per cent.
That means that more than four out of 10 eligible voters stayed home. That, combined with the fact that a full 56 per cent of those who did vote wanted the Tories out – and that’s not even taking into account all the NDPers, Liberals and others (like me) who voted PC not only to keep the Wildrose out, but also to keep “certain candidates” in their respective ridings out.
Could have made a big difference if those people had voted. Just sayin’ . . .
Cheers,
Jim Starko

SINC SAYS:
Part of the problem could be solved by tossing out our antiquated 'First Past the Post' method of elections where parties unwanted by the majority gain a majority government. A proportional representation system would have given us a PC minority government, as it should be.
Whatzit?
St. Albert's Place reader Bixman has a puzzle picture for you to solve, so whatzit?

Punographics To Enjoy

I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. I just can't put it down.
I did a theatrical performance about puns. It was a play on words.
They told me I had type-A blood, but it was a Type-O.
PMS jokes aren't funny; period.
Why were the Indians here first? They had reservations.

The Anniversary Gifts
24/04/2012 05:53

"Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad," gushed son number one. 'Sorry I'm running late. I had an emergency at the hospital with a patient, you know how it is, and I didn't have time to get you a gift."
"Not to worry," said the father. "The important thing is that we're all together today."
Son number two arrived and announced, "You and Mom look great, Dad. I just flew in from Los Angeles between depositions and didn't have time to shop for you."
"It's nothing," said the father. "We're glad you were able to come."
Just then the daughter arrived. "Hello and happy anniversary! I'm sorry, but my boss is sending me out of town and I was really busy packing so I didn't have time to get you anything."
After they had finished dessert, the father said, "There's something your mother and I have wanted to tell you for a long time. You see, we were very poor. Despite this, we were able to send each of you to college. Throughout the years your mother and I knew that we loved each other very much, but we just never found the time to get married."
The three children gasped and all said, "You mean we're all bastards?"
"Yep," said the father. "And cheap ones too!"

Crown Royal Fishing Story
23/04/2012 04:58

Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in his mouth, I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket.
Now the dilemma, how to release the snake without getting bit. So, I grabbed my bottle of Crown Royal and poured a little whiskey in its mouth.
His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog.
A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. It was that snake, with two more frogs.

Readers Nearly Evenly Split On Election Winner
With major scientific polls still predicting a Wildrose win tomorrow, our readers unscientific poll does not agree. St. Albertans predict a razor thin victory for the Tories with a minority government. That mirrors the history of St. Albert's penchant for swimming against the stream by electing a member from the opposition side of the assembly. Of course the only real poll will be tomorrow night when the final results are in.
