Traffic Calming Is A
Miss With Residents

The work is done in some areas and still going on in others, but residents are having none of it.

The internet is full of comments that scream dissatisfaction at the city of St. Albert for creating more safety issues than they are curing, many claim.

Most of it is part of the totally out of touch Safe Journeys To School nonsense the city is imposing on neighbourhoods.

Giant concrete islands jutting out into traffic, in some cases over half a kilometre from the nearest school.

Here are a variety of Grandin citizen's comments lifted from the web that the city and the new council in particular need to pay close attention to:

*
Whomever the engineer is that is being consulted on all the roadway changes in St Albert over the past few years is not doing the city any favours, nor are the people approving the changes. Another debacle like the angle parking and the open season crosswalk. All temporary?

*
Why wouldn't they just make this a 3 way stop? Surely 2 stop signs is cheaper than whatever it is they're trying to do.

*
I'd imagine even the regular sized school buses will have hard time getting through that intersection now. Dunno how many school buses go through it now, but if any do, it's just got so much more difficult to navigate.

* You all deserve a huge tax break for the disruption you have had to put up with for months! This city never ceases to amaze me with their construction choices, so called Road improvements which are an enormous waste of time and money (angle parking, roundabout, criss-cross walk, the list goes on).

*
What in the hell were anyone thinking? That is going to be the most dangerous intersection in all of Grandin. This is absolutely crazy. Cathy Heron this needs to be dealt with immediately.

There are many more online comments concerning the Akins Drive mess that is also being created.

Safety is not created by turning local streets into slalom courses that frustrate drivers. Rather it is education of drivers on the road and school children, at home and in the classrooms, to be taught pedestrian safety.

Instead the city hauls out wacky ideas to protect children that do nothing to prepare them for the real adult life ahead they all must be prepared to live. Everyone has a responsibility to learn how to deal with traffic without being coddled.

The city needs to listen and stop this total waste of tax dollars now. They have St. Albert Trail totally screwed up and appear to be hell bent on doing the same to all city collector routes.

See the mess for yourself on Akins Drive below, much of it a half kilometre from any school. A total distance of 1.2 kilometres with seven obstructions points now built in that reduce road widths by half. Ridiculous.

Making Fried Eggs

Making Fried Eggs
A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband.

Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen.

"Careful," he said, "CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You're cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They're going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you're cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don't forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the! Salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!"

The wife stared at him. "What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don't know how to fry a couple of eggs?"

The husband calmly replied, "I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I'm driving."

You Love Bananas? Scientists Say You Should Prepare To Live Without Them

You Love Bananas?
The banana has become central to so many breakfasts.

It's also often seen at lunches.

Bananas are substantial. They're supposed to be good for you, even if some nutritionists think they're something of a sugar-bomb.

Now there's a problem. Bananas are dying.

A Heart Warming Story

A Heart Warming Story
Because of his stupidity and clumsiness, his teacher, was always yelling at him, "You're driving me crazy, Tyrone!"

One day, Tyrone's mother came to school to check on how he was doing.

The teacher told his mother honestly, that her son was simply a disaster, getting very low marks, and that she had never seen such a stupid boy in her entire teaching career.

The mother was so shocked at the feedback that she withdrew her son from school and moved out of London, and relocated to Birmingham.

Twenty-five years later, the teacher was diagnosed with an almost incurable cardiac disease. All the doctors strongly advised her to have open heart surgery, but there was only one surgeon in Britain who could perform the operation and he was located at the Birmingham Clinic. Left with no other options, the teacher decided to have the operation, which was successful.

When she came round after surgery she saw a handsome young doctor smiling down at her. She wanted to thank him, but could not talk. Her face started to turn blue, she raised her hand, trying to tell him something but quickly died. The doctor was shocked, wondering what could possibly have gone wrong so suddenly.

Then he turned around and saw our friend Tyrone, a janitor in the Clinic, who had unplugged the life-support equipment in order to connect his vacuum cleaner.

If you thought for one moment that Tyrone had become a heart-surgeon, there is a high likelihood that you voted for Justin Trudeau.

Duelling Winter Forecasts Prove It's Impossible To Predict The Weather

Dueling Winter Forecasts
If the recent hot spell blanketing much of the United States has you yearning for blizzards, frigid temperatures, and deep, unbroken powder, the new winter forecast from Accuweather meteorologists is sure to warm your heart.

The meteorology company recently released its predictions for the 2017-2018 winter in the U.S., with the Northeast, Northwest and Rockies all expected to receive above average snowfall conditions.

"I think this year is going to bring a good ski season in the Northeast," AccuWeather lead long-range forecaster Paul Pastelok said. "And around the holidays we should have some snow for the interior Northeast."

Warning Of 'Ecological Armageddon' After Dramatic Plunge In Insect Numbers

Warning Of 'Ecological Armageddon' After Dramatic Plunge In Insect Numbers
The abundance of flying insects has plunged by three-quarters over the past 25 years, according to a new study that has shocked scientists.

Insects are an integral part of life on Earth as both pollinators and prey for other wildlife and it was known that some species such as butterflies were declining. But the newly revealed scale of the losses to all insects has prompted warnings that the world is “on course for ecological Armageddon”, with profound impacts on human society.

'Future City' To Be Built In Canada By Alphabet Company
Sidewalk Labs, owned by Google's parent company, Alphabet, is to build a digital city in Toronto.

It aims to turn a waterfront area into a working laboratory for a range of "smart" technology.

It is likely to feature fast wi-fi availability, millions of sensors, sustainable energy and autonomous cars.

Technology companies are touting their hardware and software to cities, as urban planners tackle issues such as congestion, pollution and overcrowding.

Oddities To Ponder

Oddities To Ponder
The military salute is a motion that evolved from medieval times, when knights in armor raised their visors to reveal their identity.

If you get into the bottom of a well or a tall chimney and look up, you can see stars, even in the middle of the day.

When a person dies, hearing is the last sense to go. The first sense lost is sight.

Is There An Upside To Having No Social Life?

Is There An Upside
The trick to being successful could, in fact, be simple.

For one month, I declined all in-person activities with friends to see if it would make me more productive.

From my own experience interviewing highly successful artists, writers, and creative entrepreneurs I’ve found one of the most common responses to the question of how they can be so prolific to be, ‘well, I don’t have a social life.’

As a freelancer working solo from home, while my housemates head out to work, I justified a very active social life as basic human necessity. Yet when it dawned on me just how much time I was spending socialising, I realised I may be taking it to an extreme.

Facts About Farting You Probably Didn’t Know

Facts About Farting
Yet, despite this fact, most of us are still uncomfortable with the gaseous byproducts that accompany digestion. Sometimes, the root of that discomfort comes from holding in a much-needed burp, other times it’s in the form of irritation at the onset of poorly timed hiccups during a speech…lastly, there’s the godfather of all discomfort. The crippling embarrassment that accompanies an unexpected audible fart in a room full of people.

It’s. The. Worst.

TEXT ME LATER

By Don Hamaliuk

Where is my cell phone, I really need it now
I need to message something, to someone, somehow
They’re sending me a text that I really need to see
It must be so important and it’s only just for me

If I don’t answer it immediately, I may lose my place
In the world of communication and in my human race
Excuse me while I answer, I’ll be back with you in time
It’s become another habit, when I hear the message chime

I know that we’re together and our time is precious too
But my cell phone is my lifeline, so what am I to do
If you can just be patient and let me multi task
My text will be a short one and promise to be fast

Oh my God here’s another one, it’s from a facebook friend
I need to answer now, to help her problems mend
Looks like I’ll be on my phone, for the rest of the day
How about you text me later, for a time to have your say

An odd use for Whatzit?
Bixman / St. Albert

READER GUESSES:

*
Well I sure won't say The Sunday Whatzit? is too easy at all,
in fact I'll have to admit defeat, especially with the added SAP
description: "An odd use for Whatzit?" That leaves me really
wondering and I was going to suggest it may be a fossilized
Crotalocephalina Globifrons or trilobite as it looks similar.
Or a carbonized cone or ??? now being used for charcoal and
a BBQ??? -

A Trip To Rome

A Trip To Rome
Mrs. Donovan was walking down O'Connell Street in Dublin when she met up with Father Flaherty.

The Father said, 'Top o' the mornin' to ye! Aren't ye Mrs. Donovan, and didn't I marry ye and yer hoosband two years ago?'

She replied, 'Aye, that ye did, Father.'

The Father asked, 'And be there any wee little ones yet?'

She replied, 'No, not yet, Father.'

The Father said, 'Well now, I'm going to Rome next week and I'll light a fertility candle for ye and yer hoosband.'

She replied, 'Oh, thank ye, Father ... 'They then parted ways.

Some years later they met again. The Father asked, 'Well now, Mrs. Donovan, how are ye these days?'

She replied, 'Oh, very well, Father!'

The Father asked, 'And tell me, have ye any wee ones yet?'

She replied, 'Oh yes, Father! Two sets of twins and six singles, ten in all!'

The Father said, 'That's wonderful! And how is yer loving hoosband doing?'

She replied, 'E's gone to Rome to blow out yer friggin' candle.'

How Americans Lost The Stars And How We Might Be Able To Get Them Back

How Americans Lost The Stars
The United States is poised to get its first Dark under the pristine nighttime skies of central Idaho. Pending approval from the International Dark-Sky Association, the designation would recognize the region's clear skies, virtually untouched by light pollution, as “possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and nocturnal environment.”

If you've lived in or near cities most of your life and have never seen a truly dark sky you may not understand why anyone would bother with this. The night is dark, and dark is dark wherever you are, right?

Not exactly.
