A SAP Editorial
Council Forging Ahead With
Library Is One Huge Mistake

libraryedit
By now it should be obvious to certain council members (the Fab Four) that there is substantial opposition to borrowing $22 million to build a new branch library. It won’t change their minds though, as they continue to press to get the process to build the new branch library in place before the next election.

But danger lurks in the shadows that the Fab Four have never even considered. Danger you say? What could any danger possibly be you ask? How about upset citizens who oppose the library showing up at the polls in great numbers and ousting the council members who support it.

Consider a new council given a strong mandate by voters to stop the spending and a partially completed library process is left cold to fester on vacant property.

That’s right. The entire process stopped dead in its tracks in late October. It could very well happen with two of the Fab Four, Crouse and Osborne, not seeking re-election.

And council members who voted against giving residents more time to collect 6,500 signatures on a petition to stop it now while there is still time, may live to regret their decision. And remember these four council members were the same people who denied citizens a chance to approve or reject said library via a question on the ballot they were afraid to offer, likely because they knew in their hearts it would be rejected.

I think it is safe to assume now that many more residents oppose building a branch library than those who support it.

It is a real possibility residents may grab the bull by the horn during the next election and turf the other two councillors, Broadhed and Heron, to stop the process. Especially if the onerous task of gathering 6,500 names on a petition in very little time fails. Think of the waste of time and money already spent by that time.

don caricature small copy
If council really cared about this city and its citizens, they would cease all actions aimed at pushing through something so many do not want, and allow democracy to run its course.

But the Fab Four won't do that. They do not possess the collective wisdom, nor courage to avoid a possible financial tragedy. They would rather try and shove this down taxpayers throats.

Saturday Sessions April 29th Presents

This weeks Mark Ammar's Saturday Sessions show 669 presents guest
Jack Drebit - grew up in the north end of Winnipeg during the 60’s and learning to play guitar at age 13 became a passion that has lasted his whole life. Jack started playing the music scene in Winnipeg working with a number of local bands. During the 60's there were 152 live music venues to choose from. In the 70's Jack toured with The Roy Petty Show throughout Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Minnesota. Roy was from Fort Worth Texas and a mentor to Jack.

Jack came to Alberta in 1983 touring with a country show band called the Chapparals and later in a Duo called Michaels & Williams. He married Cheryl and they formed the Williams & Williams Duo and toured Alberta for 12 years. Arriving in the local music scene 2 years ago, he is proud to have shared the stage with so many talented Edmonton musicians and has had the opportunity to work as the Jack Drebit Blues Band. Jack cites his musical influences as the Beatles, Stones, Allman Bros, Lynyrd Skynyrd, BB King, Albert King, Eric Clapton & Jimi Hendrix.

Throughout his career he has played rock & roll, country and of course the blues. Jack has a very recognizable raspy blues voice and is a very smart guitar player. I have previously invited Jack as a sideman and he has also appeared as my guest and we are happy to have Jack back.

13 German Towns With Hilarious Literal Translations

13 German Towns
Some of these quaint, wholesome villages have rather indecent-sounding names.

Whether the names got lost in translation over time, or someone back in time had quite a sense of humour, it's not always clear.

But you might start to feel sorry for the folks stuck living in these unfortunately named villages and towns - that is if you can ever stop giggling over the absurdity to feel such sympathy.

Ralph And Edna

Ralph And Edna
Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Ralph suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there.

Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled him out. When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna's heroic act she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally stable.

When she went to tell Edna the news she said, 'Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of the person you love. I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness.

The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him.

I am so sorry, but he's dead.' Edna replied, 'He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry. How soon can I go home?'

How To Plan A Vegetable Garden

How to Plan a Vegetable Garden
Here's everything you to know about where to start and what to plant in a garden filled with vegetables.

Starting a vegetable garden at home is an easy way to save money -- that $2 tomato plant can easily provide you with 10 pounds of fruit over the course of a season.

But planting a garden with vegetables also gives you the pleasure of savoring a delicious, sun-warmed tomato fresh from your backyard. In almost every case, the flavor and texture of varieties you can grow far exceed grocery store produce.

Plus, growing vegetables can be fun. It's a great way to spend time with children or have a place to get away and spend time outdoors in the sun.

The Flight Path

The Flight Path
A guy sitting at a bar in Chicago O’hare noticed a beautiful woman sitting next to him. He thought to himself, “Wow, she’s so gorgeous she must be a flight attendant. But which airline does she work for?” Hoping to gain her attention, he leaned towards her and uttered the Delta Slogan, “Love to fly and it shows?”

She gave him a blank, confused stare and he immediately thought to himself, “Nope, not Delta.”

A moment later, another slogan popped into his head. He leaned towards her again, “Something special in the air?” She gave him the same confused look.

He mentally kicked himself, and scratched American Airlines off the list. Next he tried the Southwest slogan, “Low fares, nothing to hide?”

This time the woman savagely turned on him, “What the Hell do you want?”

The man smiled, then slumped back in his chair, and said … “Ahhh, definitely United Airlines!”

For The Love Of God, Stop Putting Two Spaces After A Period

For The Love Of God
A close friend of mine recently asked me to edit an important professional email. We’ve known each other since we were 8 years old, and in recent years he’s devolved into somewhat of a Patrick Bateman–esque, white-collar psychopath. That opinion was only affirmed when I learned he still puts two spaces after his periods. I know where he learned this — it was drilled into us in grade school, when our teachers first introduced us to keyboards. But the habit had never been corrected.

He had the gall to tell me I was wrong about this, even though I do write for a living and tend to be well-versed in such things. Two spaces after a period is the correct usage, he said. He was certain.

14-Year-Old You Is Nothing Like 77-Year-Old You

14-Year-Old You
Think back to what you were like as a young teen. Were you shy or outgoing, happy or moody, responsible or not so much? Now look at yourself as an adult. Despite changes in your fashion sense and music taste, has your personality stayed pretty much the same?

Past research has found that personality typically remains relatively stable from adolescence into early adulthood, but until recently few studies have looked at the long term. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh believe they've completed the longest-ever personality study, measuring personality in the same group of people in early adolescence, then again in their much later years.

St. Albert Library Petition
Borrowing Bylaw #24/2017

Editor:

I have attached a
Petitioner’s Signature Form for the subject petition. We need to collect 6500 signatures before May 14th, just over two weeks - a daunting task but not impossible. We certainly will fail if we do not pursue it … that’s an absolute guarantee. However, let us work to get this accomplished. Get your friends and neighbours to join in with their signatures and to participate in getting their friends and neighbours to sign also.

If you can, go door-to-door in your neighbourhood. As a coordinated logistical plan, let me know what streets you will be canvassing.

Please note: Also attached is an ‘Affidavit of Execution’ to be completed by the witness of the signatories. The witness would best be the same person for all the signatories per ‘Petition Signature Form’.
Download and print the forms here.

Only residents of St. Albert who are Canadian citizens and are over 18 years old are eligible to sign the petition.

no-libraries-signjpg-94a4ba3ba83f146e
Let me know when and where I can collect your completed forms.

Check ‘St. Albert Library Petition’ Facebook for updates and more details.

Let’s get cracking and win this battle for the good of all residents of St. Albert.

Best Regards,

Steve Stone

Best Secret Bars In The World

The 21 Best Secret Bars
Ever since nightlife pros discovered people would pay $15 for a drink so long as they passed through a bookcase or backdoor first, the term "speakeasy" has become utterly meaningless. You don't even need to bother with the elaborate entrances anymore! Just turn down the lights, put a gin cocktail on the menu, and suddenly, you're a secret Prohibition bar.

We want to salute the bars that actually provide a little mystery, which is why we put together this list of the best secret bars in the United States and around the world. Naturally, we're not suggesting no one's heard of these places -- if they were full-blown secrets, they'd be out of business -- but rather, we're tipping our (possibly bowler?) hats to them for their efforts to shroud the operation. May their passwords be ever-changing and their phone numbers be forever unlisted.

Also, don’t tell them we wrote this.

Fake Olive Oil Companies Revealed – Stop Buying These Brands Now

Fake Olive Oil
This is disturbing! 70% of Olive oil available in stores in the US has actually been cut with cheaper, nastier oils – meaning its fake!

There’s an enemy at the gates, it has been slowly infiltrating our olive oil market and corrupting one of the products that we all know is a healthy, sustainable option and one of Europe’s secrets to longevity. That’s right, 7 of the biggest olive oil manufacturers in the US have been cutting their products with cheaper, inferior oils (such as sunflower oil or canola oil) in order to minimize the cost of production, but it has come at a huge cost to everyone who invests in this healthy alternative.

I’d say you're pretty close Mark, and even though there isn't anything
to compare its size, I'd guess that it's a small carved ivory netsuke and
probably used as a closure or fastener on a kimono or similar.

My Daddy Sleeps Naked

My Daddy Sleeps Naked
"Late again!" the third-grade teacher sternly said to little Johnny.

"It ain't my fault this time, Miss Russell. You can blame this 'un on my Daddy. The reason I'm three hours late is my Daddy sleeps naked!"

Now, Miss Russell had taught grammar school for 30-some-odd years. Despite her mounting fears, she asked little Johnny what he meant by that.

Full of grins and mischief, and in the flower of his youth, little Johnny and trouble were old friends, but he always told her the truth.

"You see, Miss Russell, out at the farm we got this here low down fox. The last few nights, he done ate six hens.

Last night, when Daddy heard a noise out in the chicken pen, he grabbed his double barrelled shot gun and said to my Ma, "That fox is back again. I'm a gonna git him!''

"Stay back," Daddy whispered to all us kids!

"My Daddy was naked as a jaybird -- no boots, no pants, no shirt! To the hen house he crawled, then, he stuck that double-barrelled 12-gauge shotgun through the window of the coop.

As he stared into the darkness, with a fox on his mind, our old hound dog, Rip, had done gone and woke up and comes sneaking up behind Daddy.

Then, as we all looked on plumb helpless, old Rip done went and stuck his cold nose in my Daddy's crack!"

"Miss Russell, we all been pluckin' chickens since three o'clock this mornin!"

Old Mice Made Young Again With New Anti-Aging Drug

Old Mice Made Young
There’s something eerily dystopian about the lives of cells.

Like the young heroes in popular teen novels, cells are born into stringent organ “societies,” destined to perform specific roles preordained by their DNA expression. Like the bodies they inhabit, cells have limited lifespans, and when they grow old, they begin leaking toxic molecules into their surroundings.

To protect the body, aged cells undergo the ultimate sacrifice: they switch on molecular machinery that results in their own death—a process beautifully named “apoptosis,” meaning the “gentle falling of leaves” in ancient Greek.
