These pics from a friend who spent the weekend in Calgary during the return trip. The friend wrote, "Attached is what greeted me at the south end of Red Deer when I got there this afternoon. Thankfully there was an accident on the Deerfoot that slowed me getting out of Calgary or I might have been in all that hail.  It looked
like winter came early!"

"And this is what I drove into closer to Edmonton. I drove right under a spaceship shaped cloud, had sweeping rain across the highway, hard rain - I was so scared it would be hail and/or a tornado.  But I could see that some places would have got hail." - Submitted by Geordie in Edmonton.

A Lobster, Avocado & Mango Salad That Just Screams Summer

A Lobster, Avocado
You know an avocado is ripe and ready-to-eat if it produces a firm, gentle pressure. Ripe avocados should be eaten in one to two days.

If you need them for an upcoming event, purchase firm, unripe avocados and let them ripen for four to five days at room temperature. Fresh and delicious, they’re the perfect addition to salads and main dishes.

A Look At Steve Stone, The Man

steve stone

One does not meet many people with the commitment to principle as that of 37 year St. Albert resident Steve Stone. I had an opportunity to sit down with Stone one evening this week and discovered a side of the man few people see. And believe me when I say, more people should see this side.

Stone is deeply committed to keeping the people who govern our city on the up and up. Since he retired from the business he founded here, he has had time to reflect on the actions of city council for the past five plus years. He did not much like what he saw and decided to become a campaigner to clean up city politics.

He objected to what he saw as part collusion, part corruption and a general disdain for the residents of this city by their local government. Thus began his gathering of evidence, not only to expose council, but to make citizens aware of the tone of the elected officials who set the standards the community lives by.

His first appearance before council in March of 2016 (
see the video here) was intended to shake up members of council as well as the public over what he refers to as the 'Prefontaine scandal' during the current council's term. He was disappointed when councillors Hughes and MacKay’s attempts to address the scandal in council, fell on deaf ears. Thus began Stone's quest to set the governance of the city on a different track.

Stone decided to single out current mayor Nolan Crouse by bringing court action that could result in Crouse's removal from office. That action was
outlined here yesterday by deputy mayor Cam MacKay. But Stone also has his sights set on councillor Cathy Heron and the role she played in creating the current situation. He blames her as much as anyone for the refusal of council to allow a forensic audit to get to the bottom of what was going on in the now infamous double dipping issue, again involving Crouse.

It would be naive not to consider that Stone's involvement helped prompt the Municipal Government Inspection recently completed and to be released in advance of the civic election. Or that his exposure of the Prefontaine episode did not have a devastating effect on current council. And now the looming decision on the pecuniary actions of mayor Crouse.

Don New Caricature Small
Stone has no intention of stopping his quest to clean up local politics and put power back in the hands of the people by insisting on responsible, respectful, frugal and proper governance for the people of this city.

Who can argue with goals like that in an election year?

The Collision

The Collision
I rear-ended a midget the other day with my car. I didn't know he was a midget when I ran into him. I got out to apologize, expecting a normal size driver, and when I saw the midget climb out of his car and start walking back toward me with his grumpy face, I just about lost it. I can't help it, I laugh when I'm nervous, and he just looked so funny marching back toward me.

So anyways, I'm doing everything I can to avoid cracking up because I know it's only going to make it worse if I start laughing at him after I've already dented his car. Well he looks at me with a very stern face and he can tell I'm not taking him very seriously.

"There's nothing funny about this." He said.

"I know." I replied.

"I'm not happy." He stated.

"Well then, which one are you?"

Meet The People Who Care For 100 'Boardwalk Cats' At Jersey Shore

Meet The People Who
It’s another hot summer day at the Jersey Shore, but Julius found a nice cool spot to comfortably chill.

He’s called this area near the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! attraction on the Atlantic City Boardwalk home for the past 10 or 11 years.

Since Julius can’t talk – he’s an orange cat, after all – nobody knows precisely how long he’s been here.

Since a team of advocates and volunteers made it its mission to care for Julius and the dozens upon dozens of other feral cats living in colonies under the Atlantic City Boardwalk, though, it’s known that he’s well-fed, sheltered and unconditionally loved.

EDITOR'S NOTE:

The following is a statement regarding the Law Courts proceedings yesterday in Edmonton prepared by Deputy Mayor Cam MacKay. The proceedings were instigated by local resident Steve Stone asking the court to remove Mayor Nolan Crouse from office for a breach of the pecuniary interest section of the Municipal Government Act. More tomorrow in an interview with Mr. Stone on what prompted him to bring the proceedings against the current mayor, along with his views on the city and its future.

Edmonton Law Courts

Pecuniary Interest Matter
Against Mayor Nolan Crouse

law courts edmonton
Don,

In my role as Deputy Mayor I attended Nolan Crouse’s pecuniary interest matter in the Edmonton Law Courts yesterday as per section 9.2 of the Procedure Bylaw. I did not watch any of the court proceedings so I cannot comment directly on what was said in the court rooms, rather I waited outside in the event that there was a decision rendered to remove Nolan Crouse from office for a breach of the pecuniary interest section of the Municipal Government Act. I was able to read through the briefs prepared by both parties and the issues before the court relating to pecuniary interest are listed below:

1 The matter involving a vote on obtaining an independent forensic audit of Nolan Crouse’s expense accounts and the subsequent challenging of the Chair and splitting of motions as initiated by Councillor Heron.

2 The Patrick Draper lawsuit against Gord Hennigar, Richard Stringham, John Doe and ABC Corporation with Nolan Crouse as a third party defendant. In this case there was a motion put forward by myself to cap the funding at $25,000 and an amending motion by Councillor Heron to keep the current funding in place with an increase to $50,000 and an opportunity for the former city manager Patrick Draper to return to council for more legal funding as required.

3 The issue of 80 Salisbury and Nolan Crouse’s ownership of 86 Salisbury and the risk of potential contamination on the site and the potential impact on land and land values in the area.

Today justice Burrows reserved his decision meaning that he will render a written judgement at some point in the future. As Deputy Mayor, I will watch carefully for this verdict for the remainder of my term as deputy Mayor and will keep you updated as required.

Yours Truly;

Cam MacKay
Councillor
City Of St. Albert

Tower Of Human Skulls Found In Mexico City Dig Casts Light On Aztec Sacrifices

Tower Of Human Skulls
A tower of human skulls unearthed beneath the heart of Mexico City has raised new questions about the culture of sacrifice in the Aztec empire, after crania of women and children surfaced among the hundreds embedded in the forbidding structure.

Archaeologists have found more than 650 skulls caked in lime and thousands of fragments in the cylindrical edifice near the site of the Templo Mayor, one of the main temples in the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, which later became Mexico City.

Tabasco Debuts Scorpion Sauce, Its Hottest One Yet

Tabasco Debuts Scorpion Sauce
Tabasco's Original Red Sauce isn't generally considered to be a mouth-burning, tear-jerking hot sauce; it adds just a dash of heat on everything from scrambled eggs and soups to burgers and wings.

Well, the game is about to change.

The McIlhenny Company, the makers of Tabasco sauce, are ready to release their hottest sauce yet, which they're simply calling Scorpion Sauce.

The new hot sauce will only be available for a limited time, but it's designed to leave a lasting impression. Scorpion Sauce blends scorpion peppers with guava, pineapple, and Tabasco's Original Red Sauce to create "a tangy sauce with untamed heat and a touch of Caribbean sweetness," per a press release obtained by Bon appétit.

Senior Love

Senior Love
I was in my back yard trying to launch a kite. I threw the kite up in the air, the wind would catch it for a few seconds, then it would come crashing back down to earth. I tried this a few more times with no success.

All the while, my wife Vicki is watching from the kitchen window, muttering to herself how men need to be told how to do everything.

She opens the window and yelled to me, 'You need a little tail.' I turned with a confused look on my face and yelled back, 'Make up your mind. Last night, you told me to go fly a kite!

Advice From An Old Farmer

Advice From An Old Farmer
Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.

Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.

Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.

Beer Remains the Preferred Alcoholic Beverage in the U.S.

Beer Remains the Preferred
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans who drink alcohol continue to say they most often choose beer (40%) over wine (30%) and liquor (26%). Beer has typically been the preferred alcoholic beverage in Gallup's trend.

The latest results are from a July 5-9 update of Gallup's annual Consumption Habits poll. Gallup has found that beer is most popular among men; this year, 62% of male drinkers say they prefer beer, compared with 19% of female drinkers. Less-educated and middle-income Americans also tend to choose beer.

For the past two decades, at least three in 10 drinkers have said they prefer wine, peaking at 39% in 2005. Wine was slightly less popular in the early to mid-1990s. Women are significantly more likely than men to prefer wine, at 50% vs. 11%, respectively. This beverage is also preferred more among college-educated adults.

A REASON TO SMILE

By Don Hamaliuk

All of our friends, give us reason to smile
Some fit in so easy, to our personal lifestyle
Maybe not Jack’s sister, she gives me the creeps
And John is a know-it-all and at poker he cheats

But I like my neighbour Bill; he invites me for a beer
And my brother Mike, has opinions I like to hear
All the guys on the ball team; give support for good play
It’s the reason I come back and the reason I’ll stay

Can we always be happy, with everyone we know
As they all play their part, in our life on the go
Showing all my emotions, is my standard of living
I thank everyone contributing; for all they are giving

I don’t worry too much, about whose coming and going
But I do care a lot about the love that they’re showing
And if they’re quick with a joke and give me reason to smile
I’ll give them my time and let them stay for a while
