A Porto City Tour
image5
RR Writes, "A friend sent along these shots of a tour of Porto."
Visited Guimaraes, the birthplace of Portugal's first king.  Here we did a walking tour of the medieval quarter.  From here we travelled to Braga, a city famous for its churches, just in case you haven't seen enough of them, last count was over 300.  Braga is the religious capital of Portugal.  The Romans occupied it in 250BC and made it the hub of five major roads, all leading to Rome.

image6
We visited the church on the hill - Casa days Estampas.  There were three ways to get to the top...by road, by climbing the 200+ stairs or by funicular.  We chose the later.

image2
Then we headed for Braga city centre.  We entered the city through this gate.

image3
There were many gardens so thought I would give you a change of scenery.

Saturday Sessions September 30th Presents

This weeks Mark Ammar's Saturday Sessions show # 691 presents guest - Kat Danser - her music navigates a paddle steamer from the muddy banks of the Mississippi Delta downriver toward a big ol’ full moon over New Orleans. Dubbed ‘Queen of the Swamp Blues’, this Edmonton-based guitar slinger, songsmith, and blazing vocalist channels the spirit of roots, blues and gospel music pioneers. Her fourth album, Baptized by the Mud, is a collaboration between Danser and Juno-award winning producer Steve Dawson. This CD (distributed by Outside Music) is the summation of years of study, mentorship, and songwriting with legendary blues icons in Mississippi - birthplace of the blues - and her graduate studies at the U of A, where Danser focused her Masters thesis on the representation of blues music over the past century.

A national touring and award-winning artist, Danser has performed at the 25th Anniversary of Canadian Women in Blues at Massey Hall in Toronto, the Calgary International Blues Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Calgary Folk Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival, Folk on the Rocks Festival in Yellowknife, Regina Folk Festival, Saskatoon Blues Festival, Lethbridge Jazz Festival, Vancouver Island MusicFest, The Winspear Centre’s ‘Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts’, Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, Harmony Bazaar Festival, Mountainview Music Festival, Islands Music Festival and the Winter Roots & Blues Festival.

Media reviews and interviews have occurred with CBC Radio, Global TV, Halifax Chronicle, FYI Music, Vancouver Georgia Straight, Edmonton Journal, CKUA Radio, Winnipeg Free Press, CTV, Edmonton Sun, Toronto Blues Society, Blues Matters!, Penguin Eggs; with highlights being featured by CTV’s Alberta Primetime, co-hosting an edition of Natch’l Blues on CKUA with Holger Petersen, Penguin Eggs and completing a short documentary film entitled Rails & Rivers: Searching for the Heart of the Blues.

Her accolades of late have been many. Danser recently won the Ambassador of the Blues Award (Blues Underground Network), International Blues Competition Semi-Finalist Best Independent Blues Album, Top 5 Albums of 2014 (Blues Underground Network), her third Western Canadian Music Award – Spiritual Recording of the Year nomination, Top 11 Albums of 2013 (CBC Radio) and The Maple Blues Award – Best New Artist of the Year nomination.

Danser is also a nationally award winning scholar and has presented at conferences throughout North America. She holds a Masters in Musicology from the University of Alberta and has completed her PhD coursework toward a full doctorate in Musicology specializing in blues and roots music in the American South. She combines her performance and education skills to assist community building through the arts. Toward that end, Danser is the Artist in Residence at the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts (Calgary), facilitates music and healing at the U-School Program for Marginalized Youth, Foothills Youth Psychiatric School, and instructs her own Music Education Program from elementary schools to adult instructional camps. Danser’s primary goal is to use music as a space for personal exploration and as a method to strengthen communities. Very honoured and happy to have Kat Danser gracing our Sessions stage. -

A Good Mood Makes Flu Shots More Effective

A Good Mood Makes Flu Shots More Effective
Want to avoid the dreaded flu this year? It makes good sense to get a flu shot, and if you want to make sure it's effective, smile when you get your jab. In a new study, researchers at the University of Nottingham found that a positive mood has a major impact on the effectiveness of the flu — even more so than diet, sleep, and exercise.

Health experts estimate that the flu vaccine is effective in only 17 to 53 percent of cases in older adults compared to 70 to 90 percent effectiveness for younger patients. So the researchers looked at the factors that could influence the effectiveness of the flu vaccine in older patients.

At 3:00 p.m. a local guide took us on a walking tour of old town.  The León Cathedral (Catedral de Santa María de Regla de León) is a French-style Gothic cathedral built in the 13th century over the ruins of ancient Roman baths.  It is also known as The House of Light or the Pulchra Leonina.  We visited another church, a museum, saw the remains of the original Roman wall.  No pictures allowed in many of the historic buildings.

Why Is It So Hard To Swat A Fly?
Try to swat a fly and it will soon become clear that they're faster than you. Much faster. But how on Earth do these tiny creatures - with their minuscule brains - outwit us so easily?

You've probably pondered it after chasing a fly around your house and flailing your shoe with repeated, unsuccessful swats. How does it move so fast? Can it read my mind?

What Doctors Want Kids (And Parents) To Know About Getting Tattoos

What Doctors Want Kids
For the first time, the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued guidance on safe tattoos, piercings, and scarification for young people. They aren’t saying not to get tattoos—kids still have to ask Mom or Dad about that in most states, anyway. But they have some advice if you’re thinking about it.

Be Really Sure You Want a Tattoo. Duh, right? Most people actually don’t regret their tattoos (according to a 2016 Harris poll, 86 percent of people with tattoos are happy with their decision), but careful decision making will help ensure that you’re not looking up tattoo removal services in a few years. Although tattoos are more popular than they used to be, many employers still discriminate against potential workers with visible tattoos.

How The World Works Lately

How The World Works Lately
If a man cuts his finger off while slicing salami at work, he blames the restaurant.

If you smoke three packs a day for 40 years and die of lung cancer, your family blames the tobacco company.

If your neighbour crashes Into a tree while driving home drunk, he blames the bartender.

If your grandchildren are brats without manners, you blame television.

If your friend is shot by a deranged madman, you blame the gun manufacturer.

And if a crazed person breaks into the cockpit and tries to kill the pilot at 35,000 feet and the passengers kill him instead, the mother of the crazed deceased blames the airline.

I must have lived too long to understand the world as it is anymore.

The Death Of The Car Show?

The Death Of The Car Show?
PARIS/FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Frankfurt’s vast auto show, which opens next week, is already getting attention of the wrong kind - for its impressive list of no-shows.

Besides the glaring absence of Tesla (TSLA.O) and its electric Model 3, the roster of big names staying away has grown this year to include such venerable brands as Nissan (7201.T), Peugeot, Fiat (FCHA.MI), Volvo, Jeep, Mitsubishi and Infiniti.

The uncertain fortunes of the traditional car show mirror those of an industry in flux, its incumbents threatened by emissions regulation, tech giants and the sharing economy.

“Car shows need a new approach,” said Patrick Koller, chief executive of Faurecia, a parts supplier with 19 billion euros ($23 billion) in global sales. “Otherwise they will disappear.”

The Problem With Too Much Bread

The Problem With Too Much Bread
Bread is so cheap to produce that it has lost all value, creating excessive waste.

The United States has too much bread. We have moved from historic hunger and deprivation to overabundance and excessive waste, with an estimated one-third of what we bake going uneaten. It is a disturbing turn of events that our ancestors -- and countless others around the world -- would struggle to understand.

In a thought-provoking article called "Bake what we knead: Solving the problem of excess bread," Amy Halloran writes for Civil Eats about why we have too much bread, so much waste, and how that can change.

Wasp And Spider By Al Popil
Prairie yellowjacket Vespula atropilosa - 1 - al popil
Hi Don, I found this wasp (Prairie Yellowjacket) in a web in front of a window in our garage. Once it struggled in the web, a spider (Araneus gemmoides) aka Jewel or Cat-faced spider came rushing from its spot above the top window sill.

Araneus gemmoides - 2 - al popil
The second images shows it “cocooning” the wasp as silk comes from its spinnerets.

Araneus gemmoides - 3 - al popil
Araneus gemmoides - 4 - al popil
Image 3 and 4 show the spider, about the size of a nickel,  with its prey.

Araneus gemmoides - 5 - al popil
Image 5 shows the spider, a female I am told, carting off its prey. It all happened in less than two minutes. - Al

READER RESPONSE:

*
I've heard of "come into my parlour, said the spider to the fly", but never a wasp. Obviously we need more spiders to control the wasps at this time of year. Please thank Al for the Great shots. - Geordie in Edmonton

6-Year-Old Applies For Lego Job With Heartfelt Letter, Boasts ‘Lots Of Experience’

6-Year-Old Applies For Lego Job
After Legoland Windsor posted a job listing earlier this year seeking designers to help create animated Lego figures, staff at the British theme park received one application that really caught their eye.

“I am the man [for] the job because I have lots of experience,” wrote a confident Stanley Bolland in a handwritten note.

“I am 6 years old,” he wrote.

GREEDY OLD SOULS

By Don Hamaliuk

You’re old enough, to do all the things you want
Muscles a little sore, after going for a jaunt
You continue your life, to be happy and free
Hoping to live long and be all you can be

Your bills keep on coming but the money’s not there
The headaches come often and you’d better beware
Some day you may not wake and there’ll no more pain
Relieved of those problems, at your creditor’s disdain

If you get to heaven, you need worry no more
You can confess all your sins and even the score
But if the hotter part of afterlife, is where you will be
Your creditors are probably, the first ones you’ll see

The bankers and lawyers and greedy old souls
Will continue their search for all hidden loopholes
And just when you think, you can sit back and relax
The taxman will appear to collect his death tax

The Sunday Whatzit?

Everybody uses them, but sometimes not this shape.

What Are Reel Friends For?
Fishermen use dead friend as BAIT to reel in 180 lb. monster carp.

Two anglers managed to catch a monster carp using their dead friend as FISH FOOD.

Paul Fairbrass and Cliff Dale, both 65, were supposed to go on a trip with their best friend Ron Hopper but he tragically died of cancer.

So, the two best anglers decided the best way to honour their late fisherman friend was to turn his ashes into bait for a "legendary catch".
