The Great Thaw Of America's North Is Coming

The Great Thaw
The Great Thaw Of AmericaVladimir Romanovsky walks through the dense black spruce forest with ease. Not once does he stop or slow down to balance himself on the cushy moss beneath his feet insulating the permafrost.

It’s a warm day in July, and the scientist is looking for a box that he and his team have installed on the ground. It’s hidden nearly six miles (10km) north of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, where he’s a professor of geophysics and heads the Permafrost Laboratory.

The box, which is covered by tree branches, contains a data collector connected to a thermometer installed below ground for measuring permafrost temperature at different depths. Permafrost is any earth material that remains at or below 0C (32F) for at least two consecutive years.

Have You Ever Wondered?

Have You Ever Wondered?
Have you ever wondered what side of the fence you sit on?

- If a Conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one. If a Liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

- If a Conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat. If a Liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned.

- If a Conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. If a Liberal is down-and-out, he wonders who is going to take care of him.

- If a Conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels. If a Liberal doesn't like a talk show host, he demands the talk show host be shut down.

- If a Conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church. If a Liberal is a non-believer, he wants any mention of God or Jesus silenced.

- If a Conservative needs health care, he goes about shopping for it or getting a job that provides it. If a Liberal needs health care, he demands the rest of us pay for his.

- If a Conservative reads this, he will have a good laugh. If a Liberal reads this, he will be offended.

The 4 Breakfast Trends That Dominated 2017

The 4 Breakfast Trends
For some people, breakfast is more about trends than nourishment. Some of the latest breakfast trends can’t possibly taste good (please @ me if you genuinely enjoy spirulina and dyed cream cheese with activated charcoal on bread—excuse me, mermaid toast—I want to talk to you). But thankfully, the majority of trendy breakfast foods these days actually make for a meal that will keep you energized throughout the morning. Working with data based on meal entries from over 220 million users of the app MyFitnessPal, Self has reported on the biggest breakfast trends of 2017. Some are meals you've probably made in the last week. I know I have. And no, mermaid toast didn’t make the cut.

One Is Left To Wonder Why?

One Is Left To Wonder
Why is it that the City of St. Albert web site has enacted this notice when one attempts to write an email to a council member?

Isn't the idea to make it as easy as possible to contact a member of council, not purposely setting up obstructions to what should be a simple process?

And why is it that when clicking on links, a new window now opens that is clearly not matching the design of the site itself? No match of fonts or colours or anything closely resembling the starting point of the link clicked upon, just a new window of nothing but text.

The new windows that open look like an afterthought, tacked on in haste to temporarily fill a void. It is a poor representation of the city and looks like it was designed by a rank web amateur.

The Perfect Wife

The Perfect Wife
Fred is 32 years old and he is still single. One day a friend asked, "Why aren't you married? Can't you find a woman who will be a good wife?"

Fred replied, "Actually, I've found many women I wanted to marry, but when I bring them home to meet my parents, my mother doesn't like them."

His friend thinks for a moment and says, "I've got the perfect solution, just find a girl who's just like your mother."

A few months later they meet again and his friend says, "Did you find the perfect girl? Did your mother like her?"

With a frown on his face, Fred answers, "Yes, I found the perfect girl. She was just like my mother. You were right, my mother liked her very much."

The friend said, "Then what's the problem?"

Fred replied, "My father doesn't like her."

The 'Most Painted Woman In The World'

The 'Most Painted Woman
She is known as ‘the most painted woman in the world’: around 225 artists have captured the captivating likeness of Suzy Solidor, including Tamara de Lempicka, Jean Cocteau, Francis Bacon, Man Ray and Francis Picabia. A French cabaret star, she was a major mainstream recording artist in the 1930s – even though she sang really rather explicit songs of lesbian desire. Today, however, the chanteuse is hardly a familiar face.

She’d be furious, no doubt, at this slide into obscurity. Solidor was a woman ahead of her time – she matched a risqué artistic persona with shrewd business acumen, and possessed a striking awareness of the power of propagating her own image.

Why You Shouldn't Try To Be A Morning Person

Why You Shouldn't Try
We’ve all heard it before: to be successful, get out of bed early. After all, Apple CEO Tim Cook gets up at 3:45am, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne at 3:30am and Richard Branson at 5:45am – and, as we know, “the early bird catches the worm.”

But just because some successful people wake up early, does that mean it’s a trait most of them share? And if the idea of having exercised, planned your day, eaten breakfast, visualised and done one task before 8am makes you want to roll over and hit snooze ’til next Saturday, are you really doomed to a less successful life?

Mayor Heron Responds To Questions

maxresdefault
Yesterday in this space we asked several questions of the mayor and council. The mayor responded on behalf of council with an explanation.

I will leave it to readers to draw their own conclusions on the worth of this project to individual taxpayers.

A want or a need? A benefit to you, or to city administration? Either way, you best get out your wallet. Again.

The mayor wrote:

Good Morning Mr. Sinclair,

As you can imagine many factors go into making such a big decision some of them are financial and others based on either the social or environmental.

With regards to the new water meters both environmental and financial reasons:

The impetus for this project was not so much to encourage water conservation, but to avoid the ongoing expense of water meter people going door to door and collecting the usage. With the new meters we will avoid that cost and be able to bill monthly which many residents have been asking for in order to be able to better budget their monthly expenses.

We will also be able to avoid excessive costs due to leakage either in a toilet, outdoor tap or water pipe break as we can monitor usage in real time and will be notified in the case of unusual spikes.

In the long run water conservation will save us money as the wear and tear on the infrastructure is reduced and the need for more expensive water storage and transfer pump stations is avoided.

The water rates that you referred to are set by Epcor in conversations with St. Albert. Epcor serves the region and regionally, water usage is down. People are starting to understand that water is not unlimited and does come with costs to treat and transfer. Water reduction is a global issue. Also the article mentions that individual water conservations efforts was not the reason for the increase in rates it was due to a wet summer and therefore less need to water lawns, etc.

This new system has been discussed many times with council and even delayed once to get a better price

Regards,

Mayor Cathy Heron

The Search

The Search
A teenager lost a contact lens while playing hockey in the driveway.

After a fruitless search, he went inside the house and told his mother he lost a lens and, try as he might, could not find it.

Undaunted, the mother went outside and in only a few minutes returned with the lens in her hand.

"How did you manage to find it, mom?" the teenager asked.

"We weren't looking for the same thing" she replied. "You were looking for a small piece of plastic. I was looking for $150".

See How A Tiny House Village In Oregon Is Changing The Life Of Many People

See How A Tiny
Opportunity Village Eugene (OVE) is a 30 unity tiny home village in Eugene, Ore. According to Square One Villages, the community opened its gates in August 2013. Each of the tiny homes is between 60 and 80 square feet (6-7 square meters). Religion & Ethics Newsweekly points out that none of the homes have indoor plumbing or electricity, but those who have lived on the streets are used to not having what most people consider common place and very thankful for a place to call their own.

What these tiny spaces do afford those who take up residency there are privacy and security. A common kitchen and bath house are available for those who reside in the community. The kitchen is an outdoor facility, but the residents are required to keep it clean.

Will The Madness Ever Stop?

583c75161a00000b03cca124

November 27, 2017

AN OPEN LETTER

• Mayor Cathy Heron.
• Councillor Wes Brodhead.
• Councillor Jacquie Hansen.
• Councillor Sheena Hughes.
• Councillor Natalie Joly.
• Councillor Ken MacKay.
• Councillor Ray Watkins.

Dear Mayor and Council:

I write to you with my concern with a letter I received, included below, from Kevin D. Cole, Director of Utilities, City of St. Albert.

The letter is self explanatory, but is being questioned by any person I know who has received a copy.

This is a program, that from the letter, is designed to reduce water consumption by the residents of St. Albert.

Please allow me to quote Mr. Cole himself in the issue of the
St. Albert Gazette of November 11, 2017 when he told the newspaper, “When water use goes down, the cost per cubic metre of water goes up,” Cole said.

That being the obvious result, can any member of this council defend spending hundreds of thousands of tax dollars to install new water meters in every single home in this city that will result in further driving up the cost of water to residents? Isn't this program spending money to ultimately spend more money?

Was council even consulted before this particular program was launched?

What possible benefit does this have for any resident of this city?

Don New Caricature Small
I am optimistic that our newly elected members of council will see the folly, not to mention the irony of such a program.

Will council look at this program in detail and intervene to halt such a waste? Does any member of council care enough about our tax dollars to respond to me to these questions?

The Unexpected Divorce

The Unexpected Divorce
A man called up his son and told him that he and his mother were getting a divorce.

"Wait", said the son. "Why?"

"I know I didn't say anything about it but I've been miserable for months now and I can't stand it anymore."

"No! Don't! Why didn't you ever say anything about this?"

"Well, I just didn't want to bother you and your sister. I've already got my bags and I'm going to a hotel. Your mom and I are looking to file our papers next week."

"No, don't do anything. We're going to come over tomorrow and see if we can work this out. Can you wait until tomorrow?"

"Well, ok. Maybe you and Mary should bring your kids too. Your mom might like that."

"Ok, I will. See you tomorrow."

He hung up the phone and said, "Honey, the kids are coming over for Christmas."

The Eight-Day Guide To A Better Digital Life

The Eight-Day Guide
I was dubious at first when I read about the Data Detox. It sounds like a guide to logging off, but as somebody whose job requires me to be online almost all of the time, that could be professional suicide. But that is not the aim of this eight-day programme; it's more about exploring and tidying up your digital life.

It was designed by the non-profit groups Mozilla and the Tactical Technology Collective to coincide with The Glass Room, a pop-up experience in London that invited visitors to look at what happens to their data behind the scenes.

HABITS

By Don Hamaliuk

Some habits are so strong and too hard to resist
The good ones you cling to; the bad ones just persist
You need to slow it down and keep a stronger focus
And avoid giving-in, to your mind’s hocus pocus

Your life may be easier, if you were to stop and think
That nothing’s so bad, that should drive you to drink
If the drugs and the alcohol, are getting in the way
Give your head a shake and keep those things at bay

There are many other ways, to put a smile on your face
Take time for yourself and live at your own pace
All kinds of people do it, so it really can be done
Some of those good habits, can be a lot more fun

So quit the job you’re doing, if it causes you to stress
Drop the friends you’re seeing, if they’re causing you distress
If you practice more good habits, you will feel so much better
Like the feeling that you get, when you wear your favourite sweater

South Korea Is Building A $35 Billion City Designed To Eliminate The Need For Cars

South Korea Is Building
When residents of the International Business District (IBD) in Songdo, South Korea go to work, pick up their kids from school, or shop for groceries, driving is optional.

That's because the $35 billion district — currently a work-in-progress about the size of downtown Boston — was designed to eliminate the need for cars.

A project that began in 2002, the area prioritizes mass transit, like buses, subways, and bikes, instead of road traffic, according to Stan Gale, the chairman of Gale International, the developer behind the IBD.
