This sturgeon was taken out of the Columbia River at the Vernita Bridge. The fish and game officers seized the fish, the rods and the truck of the guys who caught it.
In B.C you're only allowed to take sturgeon under 60 inches. This fish is 88 inches long. They got a call of suspicious men near the bridge. The officer took the call on his day off. It will be interesting to hear what happens in court.
In our area, the Sturgeon river is closed until May 15, 2012. Fishing in a closed area can result in high fines as well as seizing your fishing gear and anything else that is related to the offense, including boats and vehicles. The mouth of the Sturgeon that goes into Big Lake is a spawning ground for northern Pike. That area is shallow water that warms up quickly making the environment good for spawning. Leave fish alone during the closed season from April 1 to May 14, which will help preserve the future of fishing.
From the Regulations:
Big Lake and tributaries:
May 15 to Mar. 31 – Walleye limit 0; Pike limit 3 over 63 cm; Perch limit 15. April 1 to May 14 – CLOSED.
If you spot someone fishing during the closed season call the 'Report A Poacher' hotline at 1-800-642-3800. The other number people can call is #3800 free on a cell phone. If Fish and Wildlife Officers lay charges, you qualify for a cash reward.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo
05/05/2012 04:37

The holiday in fact commemorates a battle between Mexican and French forces that took place in Puebla in 1862. The Mexicans triumphed over the much larger and better trained French army.
This unlikely victory is a source of pride for Mexicans and is remembered every year on May 5th.
Details here.

Music Fans Please,
A shout out for one of my favourite bands and great friends. Our efforts to keep a live music room in St. Albert will never cease.
I would like to see a full room for this great band, which obviously helps keep it live in our city of St. Albert. The Fist Full of Blues kicked the Blues on Whyte with a six-nighter last month to a full room almost every night.
Lets show our support and help keep the music room we so diligently keep for us all to enjoy. Come on out and enjoy a night of great blues with some of Alberta's veteran musicians and our good friends the Fist Full of Blues.
No cover.
Thanks,
Mark Ammar

City Loses Second Team In Five Years
Well folks, you can chalk up yet another failure for $ervu$ Place. The money losing behemoth will be short whatever amount a small group of fans spent in the place for an entire AJHL season with the loss of the St. Albert Steel.
Remember that fancy new arena that councils and administration touted would restore hockey to the city and attract major entertainment as well? The current score is hockey/entertainment 2 = $ervu$ Place 0. To our knowledge, not a single concert or major entertainment show has ever been booked by the management of the White Elephant.
Dig for your wallets folks. It's going to cost you even more for about 10 percent of the city's elite population who can afford the membership fees to use the facilities on the public purse.
From the AJHL release:
The town of Whitecourt, Alberta will join the Alberta Junior Hockey League for the 2012-2013 season. The Alberta Junior Hockey League today unanimously approved a request submitted by the St Albert Steel to relocate the hockey club.
The Whitecourt Wolverines will begin operation immediately with details regarding the hockey operations staff, management and administration to be announced shortly. The Wolverines will compete in the AJHL North Division, replacing the Steel and maintaining a balance of eight teams per division. The newest member of the AJHL will play out of the recently renovated Scott Safety Centre in Whitecourt, a 1,058 seat facility.
The city of St Albert has a long standing history with the Alberta Junior Hockey League. The city was previously home to the St Albert Saints (1977-2004) and recently the St Albert Steel (2007-2012).
Complete details on the AJHL website.

Playing Tonight At LB's Pub
May 1 - Johnny Tornado (Guitar and vocals)
From the dusty tobacco roads of Tillsonburg, Ontario comes Johnny Tornado. Johnny has traveled throughout Canada, coast to coast, playing his special brand of rockin' blues with the likes of the late, great Dutch Mason, Big Dave McLean and numerous other Canadian blues icons. As a young man he lived a gypsy's life exploring the deep American south, hustling pool and living for the moment. He worked as a carney and when the rides fell silent, Johnny would entertain the carnival crew with his honest and edgy performances.
Whenever possible he would frequent the local blues clubs and was a witness to the evolution of the some of the blues masters such as Freddie King and John Lee Hooker. At age 40 Johnny emerged with a head full of songs and an intention to live his music, his way, on the right side of the law. Though he has appeared on many recordings and has extensive stage experience, Johnny has never made a full length recording of his own … until ”Stormriders” which chronicles Johnny's life from those early days until the present.
The songs are a direct and true reflection of a man who would lay down his life for a true friend. There is a gunslinger's swagger and a ‘devil may care' attitude that permeates his soulful songwriting and performances. He is a true Canadian treasure with a penchant for blues that will rock you to the core.
Johnny has supported and helped organize a lot of great shows in Edmonton. Johnny is well connected and respected in the music community across Canada and I thank Johnny for introducing me to and getting me the chance to sit on drums with the likes of the late great Gaye Delorme and hooking up the National Steel Guitar tour with Big Dave Maclean and Doc Maclean act coming to our stage on October 11th of last year. I enjoy getting the drumming gigs with Johnny along with bassist Garry Zimmerman. We have done a few power trio shows this year and also have had the honour of sitting in with respected local guests Johnny invites to join us as part of the show.

A Roadside Lunch In Seattle-Tacoma Area
A St. Albert's Place reader is on an adventure of sorts with a trip first to the U.S. and then on to the orient. That reader, whom we shall call our Mystery Traveller, is sending photographs to document the journey. Today a look at a roadside food stand at the Freemont Sunday Market in Seattle. Oink anyone?

Playing Tonight At LB's Pub
May 1 - Johnny Tornado (Guitar and vocals)

Whenever possible he would frequent the local blues clubs and was a witness to the evolution of the some of the blues masters such as Freddie King and John Lee Hooker. At age 40 Johnny emerged with a head full of songs and an intention to live his music, his way, on the right side of the law. Though he has appeared on many recordings and has extensive stage experience, Johnny has never made a full length recording of his own … until ”Stormriders” which chronicles Johnny's life from those early days until the present.

The Older Crowd
01/05/2012 05:40

* The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.
* Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.
