Memories! This nostalgic trip crosses generational boundaries at times, and is designed to show nothing is permanent but change. Changes in society and technology affect our lives in huge and small ways. While places, societal norms and things become obsolete, for many memories remain.

Zen Teachings

Zen Teachings
1. Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me for the path is narrow. In fact, just piss off and leave me alone.

2. Sex is like air. It's not that important unless you aren't getting any.

3. No one is listening until you pass wind.

4. Always remember you're unique. Just like everyone else.

5. Never test the depth of the water with both feet.

6. If you think nobody cares whether you're alive or dead, try missing a couple of mortgage payments.

7. Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

8. If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

9. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

10. If you lend someone 20 bucks and never see that person again, it was probably well worth it.

This Is The Best Way To Cook Chicken Breasts

This Is The Best Way
As a frugal 20-something living on my own in the Big Apple, I'm practically the poster child for "ballin' on a budget" - especially when it comes to grocery shopping. While picking out my weekly staples, I usually just grab whichever meats are most affordable for the sake of giving my wallet a break, without really thinking twice about the quality (or lack thereof). But after a year of penny-pinching, I may officially be changing my ways to splurge a bit more on my most common expense: chicken.

So what's the source of said sudden change of heart (and budget allocation)? While recently browsing the internet, I came across the fact that chef Gary Maclean, a winner of MasterChef's UK series, did a Reddit AMA, and I couldn't resist diving in to hear his juicy tidbits about the show and all things food-related. During the "Ask Me Anything" conversation, one user asked the Scottish chef for advice on cooking "restaurant quality, moist" chicken breasts at home, and his answer was pretty eye opening.

See how on msn.

China Invents Rice That Can Grow In Salt Water, Can Feed Over 200 Million People

China Invents Rice
In the spring months, over 200 types of rice were planted at the Saline-Alkali Tolerant Rice Research and Development Center in Qingdao, a coastal city in eastern China’s Shandong Province. Seawater from the Yellow Sea was pumped, diluted and channeled into the rice paddies.

Researchers initially expected an output of around 4.5 tons per hectare, but surprised themselves when four types registered 6.5 to 9.3 tons per hectare.

Tests on saline-alkali tolerant rice have been going on in China for some time, but the unexpected yield marks its readiness for commercialization.

Research leader Yuan Longping, also known as China’s “Father of Hybrid Rice,” told reporters that cultivation of the strain can feed more than 200 million people, the South China Morning Post noted.

Hawaiian Crows Return From Extinction In Wild

Hawaiian Crows Return From Extinction In Wild
After living in Hawaii for thousands of years, the Hawaiian crow — or ‘alalā — vanished from the wild in 2002. It fell victim to a combination of threats, including habitat loss, disease and introduced predators like cats, rats and mongooses.

Now, thanks to years of work by conservationists, a small group of these birds are back in the forests where their ancestors evolved.

Had It All!

Had It All!
I talked to a homeless man this morning and asked him how he ended up this way.

He said, "Up until last month, I still had it all. I had plenty to eat, my clothes were washed and pressed, I had a roof over my head, I had TV and Internet, and I went to the gym, the pool, and the library. I was working on my MBA on-line. I had no bills and no debt. I even had full medical coverage."

I felt sorry for him, so I asked, "What happened? Drugs? Alcohol? Divorce?"

"Oh no, nothing like that," he said. "No, no .... I was paroled."

Heart Surgery Survival Chances 'Better In The Afternoon'

Heart Surgery Survival
Open heart surgery appears to be safer in the afternoon because of the body's internal clock, scientists have said.

The body clock - or circadian rhythm - is the reason we want to sleep at night, but it also drives huge changes in the way our bodies work.

The research, published in the Lancet, suggests the heart is stronger and better able to withstand surgery in the afternoon than the morning.

And it says the difference is not down to surgeons being tired in the morning.

Difference Between Canada And The USA
This Halloween, some Americans will dress up as Donald Trump.

Any Canadian likely to dress up as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this year?

Ha Ha Ha ... Not a chance.

Thanks to Mike Bishop of the city for this one!

Beware of Weed-Infused Halloween Candy, Say N.J. Officials

Beware of Weed-Infused
The rise of marijuana edibles is having an unexpected side-effect this trick-or-treating season.

New Jersey officials are warning parents to beware of a little “trick” this Halloween – marijuana-laced candy.

According to the state Department of Health, there is “a significant presence of marijuana candy and other edible forms in New Jersey and nearby states.”

Wes Culp, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Health, said the department “is on high alert for any number of things that could affect children” during this time of year, but the department hasn’t seen any issues with weed-laced candy yet.

THE FURY OF THE DANCE

By Don Hamaliuk

A request of Mother Nature, for the oddest of friends
The partnership inevitable, for a dance that never ends
The fire takes its pleasure, dancing with the trees
It starts out slow and easy, waltzing in the breeze
The fire is the leader, the trees will softly moan
A partnership of lust, has found a rightful home

As it turns into a two-step, the romance starts to glow
Giving way to progress, for the relationship to grow
Consuming all it’s branches, from one on to the next
Holding close together, the dancers get no rest

It turns into a polka, a pace that’s hard to keep
Into the night so restless and they will have no sleep
A chance to lose themselves in the fury of the dance
To the final burning embers, of this fiery romance

And when this dance is over, the fire will seem gone
This partnership’s resurface will never be so long
For the fire’s always looking, for seduction of the trees
Waiting so very patiently, for some kindling and a breeze

The Sunday Whatzit?
Fleam 1
Not a common item. Whatzit?

READER GUESSES:

*
Don, my grandfather had a wood working and a metal shop.
I’m sure I saw something like this when I was a kid. It was like
an etching tool or a compass. Not sure if what you have is it
but sure looks like it. -

My Dad had a mess of these, not sure of it's name but I
believe it was for measuring the gap on spark

*
Morning, Don. I think that I saw an item like this once
before at my vet's office. He had a display case of old
instruments vets used to use. The Whatzit pic looks like
something he had on display as a "handheld venepuncture
device" (had to look up the proper name of this device
known as a 'fleam'). They were designed to be placed over
the jugular vein of an animal and struck with the fleam stick
so as not to cause a hematoma during surgery. That is all I
recall from his explanation. -
