Saturday Sessions August 5th Presents

This weeks Mark Ammar's Saturday Sessions show 683 presents guest - "Lil" Davey Peters was born to music at the age of five in Winnipeg. Dave won a competition for the Song "Railroad Steamboat River" and Canal. His pants fell down while playing his Dad's Kay Acoustic. He was offered a Radio shot but his dad pulled the family out to Alberta to Ardrossan and later on to the Big E where "LiL" Davey and the Drastiks held stages thru the 60's and 70's then moved along through western Canada doing show's in B.C.

Dave played solo and band shows and lived aboard boats from 1981 to 95. He did shows as a single for many years before he retired to Charlottetown PEI which he now calls home.

Dave says his pipes are clean and so looking forward to a new Band. He sent me his thanks for these words we allowed him and in the midst of it all he is working on a hit. Dave is proud and thanks Alberta for including his work in the Music Hall of Fame for the "Son's of Adam named the "New Wing, on the "Thinkin' Animal", and he thanks everyone for this opportunity to sing for all again. We look so forward to meeting, hearing and hanging with Davey. Don't miss this one folks. This guys a legend.

What Size Is That?

What Size Is That?
A Scotsman went on a skiing holiday to Canada.

After a hard day on the slopes he retired to a bar at the bottom of the mountain.

After about five or six whiskeys, he looks up and notices a stuffed animal with big antlers on the wall.

He asks the barman, "What the hell is that?"

The barman says, "It's a Moose."

The Scottish chap says, "Good grief! How big are the cats?"

Mysterious Craters Blowing Out Of Russia Could Mean Trouble For The Whole Planet

Mysterious Craters Blowing
In northern Siberia, rising temperatures are causing mysterious giant craters — and even more dire consequences could be in store, say climate scientists.

The Russian province's long-frozen ground, called permafrost, is thawing, triggering massive changes to the region's landscape and ecology. It could even threaten human lives.

"The last time we saw a permafrost melting was 130,000 years ago. It's a natural phenomenon because of changes in the earth's orbit," said professor of earth sciences at the University of Oxford, Dr. Gideon Henderson.

Dr. Woods House Museum In Leduc
DSCF2599
Located at 4801-49th Ave in downtown Leduc, this museum was the home of one of the first doctors in the area, Dr. Robert Woods and family. Dr. Woods practiced medicine right out of his own home in the fully restored attached medical wing. Built in 1927 for Dr. Woods, the house is a fine example of Craftsman style architecture, decorated in the Art Deco period. It charmingly illustrates an upper-middle class lifestyle from the late 1920s to the early 1940s. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. during June, July and August. Starting September 1 it will be open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m, for the off season.

The Gong Show

The Gong Show
After closing time at the bar, a drunk was proudly showing off his new apartment to a couple of his friends.

He led the way to his bedroom where there was a big brass gong and a mallet.
'What's that big brass gong?' one of the guests asked.

'It's not a gong. It's a talking clock,' the drunk replied.

'A talking clock? Seriously?' asked his astonished friend.

'YUP, it is' replied the drunk.

'How's it work?' the friend asked, squinting at it.

'Watch,' the drunk replied. He picked up the mallet, gave the gong an ear-shattering pound and stepped back.

The three stood looking at one another for a moment. Suddenly, someone on the other side of the wall screamed,

'You A-HOLE! It's 3:15 in the MORNING!'

North Dakota’s Norway Experiment

North Dakota’s Norway Experiment
Late one night in October 2015, North Dakota prisons chief Leann Bertsch met Karianne Jackson, one of her deputies, for a drink in a hotel bar in Oslo, Norway. They had just spent an exhausting day touring Halden, the maximum-security facility Time has dubbed “the world’s most humane prison,” yet neither of them could sleep.

Halden is situated in a remote forest of birch, pine, and spruce with an understory of blueberry shrubs. The prison is surrounded by a single wall. It has no barbed wire, guard towers, or electric fences. Prisoners stay in private rooms with en suite bathrooms and can cook for themselves in kitchens equipped with stainless-steel flatware and porcelain dishes. Guards and inmates mingle freely, eating and playing games and sports together. Violence is rare and assaults on guards are unheard of. Solitary confinement is almost never used.

By this point, Bertsch had been in charge of North Dakota’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, which includes four adult prisons and one juvenile facility, for more than a decade, and Jackson had spent seven years as director of correctional practices. They’d left Bismarck feeling pretty good about their system, which prided itself on its humane practices and commitment to rehabilitation. But now, sitting in the glassed-in bar of the Radisson hotel with its view of the Oslo fjord, Bertsch began to cry. “We’re hurting people,” she said.

Didn’t Realize How Little I Knew

Didn’t Realize Just How Little I Knew
* Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups.

When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service.

'Wet your whistle' is the phrase inspired by this practice.

Blowing Out Birthday Candles Increases Cake Bacteria By 1,400 Percent

Blowing Out Birthday
I can identify the exact moment when my relationship with birthday cake changed forever, and it was last week, when I read a study titled “Bacterial Transfer Associated with Blowing Out Candles on a Birthday Cake.”

Of course, the more cautious (aka germophobic) among us have already thought about it in gruesome detail. One colleague said she scrapes off the top layer of frosting, a habit that suddenly made perfect sense but which I for some reason had never before considered. I had been living in ignorant, saliva-splattered bliss.

Intellectually, I knew it was fine. I’ve consumed countless slices of sheet cake finely misted with spit and suffered no particular consequences—and yet, the thought of eating another now sent visceral disgust through my body.

When Will Electric Cars Go Mainstream? It May Be Sooner Than You Think

When Will Electric Cars
As the world’s automakers place larger bets on electric vehicle technology, many industry analysts are debating a key question: How quickly can plug-in cars become mainstream?

The conventional view holds that electric cars will remain a niche product for many years, plagued by high sticker prices and heavily dependent on government subsidies.

But a growing number of analysts now argue that this pessimism is becoming outdated. A new report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance, a research group, suggests that the price of plug-in cars is falling much faster than expected, spurred by cheaper batteries and aggressive policies promoting zero-emission vehicles in China and Europe.

A LOT LIKE YOU

By Don Hamaliuk

You think you’re so unique, until you meet someone and talk
Your lives are so familiar, like you’re on the same long walk
The difference is those little things, like what you did for work
Or your treatment of some people, the bosses and the clerk

Your worries are so close to mine, your likes so much the same
I think I might just know you, your life but not your name
So when you’re feeling lonely and you have no where to go
Just think of all those someones, that you may already know

Get out there in the public and introduce yourself
Don’t keep your personal loneliness, parked up on the shelf
There are so many out there, that are just the same as you
It may be time to start a friendship and not sit home and stew

If you’re too shy to do that and you need a gentle nudge
I can come and help you, without being a judge
But there is something you should know; I am too shy too
And if you put it all together, I’m a lot like you

Deaf Italian Bookkeeper

Deaf Italian Bookkeeper
A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper, Guido, has cheated him out of $10,000,000.00. His bookkeeper is deaf. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that Guido would hear nothing; so he would not have to testify in court.

When the Godfather goes to confront Guido about his missing $10 million, he takes along his lawyer who knows sign language.

The Godfather tells the lawyer, "Ask him where's the money? The lawyer, using sign language, asks Guido where's the money?

Guido signs back, "I don't know what you are talking about." The lawyer tells the Godfather, "He says he doesn't know what you are talking about".

The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to Guido's temple and says, "Ask him again!

The lawyer signs to Guido, "He'll kill you if you don't tell him." Guido signs back, "OK.! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed at my cousin Bruno's house.

The Godfather asks the lawyer, "What did he say?"

The lawyer replies, "He says you don't have the balls to pull the trigger."

Are Helicopter Parents Ruining Summer Camp?

Are Helicopter Parents
"It beeped in the envelope. That's how we knew."

Leslie Conrad is the director of Clemson Outdoor Lab in Pendleton, S.C., which runs several different camps during the summer. Clemson bans cellphones and other electronic devices for campers.

That makes sense. We traditionally think of summer camp as a place to swim in the lake and weave friendship bracelets, not text and play video games.

But sometimes, Conrad says, parents will give their children a decoy to turn in and a second phone to keep hidden.
