Saturday Sessions February 25th Presents

Darren Gusnowsky - This weeks Mark Ammar's Saturday Sessions Jam presents guest Darren Gusnowsky  - a very respected guitarist, Darren is spoken of as one of the busiest, hardest working guitarists on the country scene. Another musician who is in it “for the long run”, a, guitarist, singer, and tunesmith, he loves the country-honk of the Exile On Mainstreet era Rolling Stones, and the seamless harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in their prime.

There’s nothing like setting the bar high. So just to add another key element into Darren’s musical personality, he has no problem remembering that it was his mother turning him on to Ricky Skaggs, which convinced him he should pay more attention to hardcore country sounds. In quoting Darren, “Here I am all these years later, winning an award with Stacie and Rob at the CCMA’s, hearing our songs on the radio, and standing side stage at a show we’ve opened for the Kentucky Headhunters and Marty Stuart,” says Gusnowsky, with an “it doesn’t get much better than this”.

A brilliant guitarist frontman who started playing full time on the road in 1993, and went to GMCC in 1997 for two years. He has freelanced for artists, Gord Bamford, Dwayne Steele and others before focusing on Hey Romeo. Darren started writing for a new project with Rob Shapiro and has been doing some freelance work again, playing with recording artist Dan Davidson. Darren also appears plays locally with acts $4 Bill, The Mojave Iguanas, and Stomp N Holler.

PHOTO ENFORCEMENT CONTINUES
IN DORMANT CITY PLAYGROUNDS

Winter has arrived. Frigid temperatures are here, and the children are nowhere to be seen on the abandoned snow-covered soccer field along Forest Drive. In St. Albert this only means one thing. Since no one is around there is a lot more room to park the photo enforcement trucks to enforce this abandoned playground zone with inadequate signs.

The two Ford trucks are out in full force this winter enforcing this dormant playground:
Photo Radar GreyFord1500X1100

  • Dark grey Ford XTR Lic # BNB 5662
Photo Radar White Ford1500
  • White Ford XTR Lic # BNB 5661

Their black GMC SUV and white Jeep are keeping busy in other locations in St. Albert.

Municipal Enforcement shamelessly continues to enforce these abandoned playground zones even though there is no shortage of legitimate locations in which to conduct photo enforcement. Contrary to certain opinion, Photo Enforcement is still an effective tool to curb speeding if used appropriately and fairly. Enforcing playgrounds in the winter is a clear example of inappropriate and unfair.

Jardine Security has been contracted to respond to sightings of Photo Radar vehicles in vacant playground zones this winter. Call Jardine for immediate response to monitor photo enforcement activity. Call
while the photo enforcement vehicles are still there.

Deep In Brazil’s Amazon, Exploring The Ruins Of Ford’s Fantasyland

Deep In Brazil’s Amazon
FORDLÂNDIA, Brazil — The Amazon jungle already swallowed the Winding Brook Golf Course. Floods ravaged the cemetery, leaving behind a stockpile of concrete crosses. The 100-bed hospital designed by the acclaimed Detroit architect Albert Kahn? Plunderers destroyed it.

Given the scale of decay and decrepitude in this town — founded in 1928 by the industrialist Henry Ford in the far reaches of the Amazon River Basin — I didn’t expect to come across the stately, largely well-preserved homes on Palm Avenue. But there they were, thanks to the squatters.

“This street was a looters’ paradise, with thieves taking furniture, doorknobs, anything the Americans left behind,” said Expedito Duarte de Brito, 71, a retired milkman who dwells in one of the homes built for Ford managers in what was planned to be a utopian plantation town. “I thought, ‘Either I occupy this piece of history or it joins the other ruins of Fordlândia.’”

Eldorado Presentation To Council

Council Became Our Adversaries

Eldorado Presentation To Council
Editor’s Note: The following is the text of a presentation made to St. Albert city council on February 21, 2017.

Mayor and Council:

I among others am here today to witness the partial ‘righting’ of a previous wrong. It will soon be four years since the residents of Erin Ridge first faced the threat of losing at the very least a significant portion of Eldorado Park. Although it was more an open field than picture book it was nonetheless prized by many as a place for informal gatherings, flying a kite or just playing ball and running around with the kids. Throughout the warmer months it regularly accommodated organized soccer games involving teams from across St. Albert and beyond.

Then came the day when it was inadvertently discovered that the park had been selected as the site of a regional secondary school which needless to say, aroused considerable concern that was about to become outright consternation. It wasn’t long before residents were banding together to discuss the issue and what might be done about it. This evolved into a literally ‘grassroots movement’ involving increasingly large gatherings held in the park itself. The attendance of several sitting city councilors at these meetings created what would later be realized as a naïve hope that perhaps we actually stood a chance of saving the park. Alas, while the interest and support expressed by a couple of the local politicians would prove to be sincere it was soon realized that others among them had more ulterior motives.

In defiance of the old saying; “You can’t fight City Hall!” the Erin Ridge Residents’ Action Committee (ERRAC) was created consisting of a core group of residents who would spearhead the efforts to have the decision overturned. Little did we know what our mission would entail or what we would endure in terms of pushback from City Council and Administration not only in the way of obstruction but from our perspective, outright deceit. Of course the usual accusations of nimbyism and to an even more ridiculous extent, prejudice and discrimination were attributed to us in a vein attempt to discredit and shame us into submission.

For one last time, let me make it perfectly clear that our quarrel was explicitly with the bureaucracy of City Hall in its stubborn adherence to an inherently undemocratic process involving the School Site Allocation Committee (SSAC) and the since removed City Manager. In effect, our very own elected representatives became our adversaries through deliberately obtrusive actions and inactions. From the very start, we maintained the position that Eldorado Park should remain intact as that particular area of Erin Ridge was already suffering the consequences of over-development that continue to this very day. In the main part, these consist of intolerable traffic congestion creating safety and noise issues that negatively impact the quality of life and economic welfare (i.e. property values and sale-ability) of the neighbouring residents that as predicted by us, have worsened. Had we been listened to and the project moved to a different site we may very well have been happy to get back to leading our ordinary lives but such was not to be.

Instead, the Eldorado incident opened our eyes to the much more pervasive and worrisome problems that exist within the politics and operations at City Hall. It is toward these that a number of us along with numerous others have since shifted our attention. With true poetic justice, the intransigence we experienced has over time created a considerable degree of circumspection from various sources. Sadly to say however, a similar modus operandi on the part of the City continues to this day with just one example being the current issue in Braeside surrounding a land swap (again involving parkland) and a proposed high-density condo project.

With the foregoing being said and the school built and operating, it is sensible that we move on and make the best of the situation. During a recent Open House Event, I personally toured Ecole Alexandre Tache and as a retired educator was very impressed not only with the physical plant but the inviting atmosphere created by the hosting students and staff. To that extent, I genuinely wish them well moving forward.

Perhaps some degree of reconciliation is possible through your approval of the redistricting although it will not entirely erase what was done nor give us back anything close to what we had. Unless it can be guaranteed that reverting back to the ‘P’ designation also stands for “in perpetuity” there is the realization that another simple decision by the present or future council could yet deprive us of what has to date been salvaged from the original Eldorado Park.

How Previous Owners Can Potentially Still Access Their Cars Long After They've Sold Them

How Previous Owners
As technology further integrates into the car industry, doing things from the car continues to get easier. You can have Volvo drop off packages, talk to Amazon’s Alexa and all sorts of things. But technology can also allow people to access cars long after they’ve sold them, which is enough to leave any buyer uncomfortable.

According to CNN, IBM researcher Charles Henderson says he sold a car several years ago and can still control it from his phone. Henderson can also see exactly where the car is, if he decides to check. Being a researcher, Henderson tested the situation on cars from four major manufacturers and found the same to be true.

The CNN story did not name Henderson’s former car nor the manufacturers he tested, but it’s still creepy to think about the various breaches in privacy we open ourselves up to by simply purchasing such connected devices.

Memories Of High School

Memories Of High School
My name is Wendy and I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist. i noticed his dental diploma, which bore his full name.

Suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark haired boy with the same name had been in my secondary school class some 40 odd years ago. Could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on, way back then?

Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought.

This balding, grey haired man with the deeply lined face was far too old to have been my classmate. After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended Morgan Park high school.

'Yes, yes I did. I'm a Morganner!’ he beamed with pride.

'When did you leave to go to college?' I asked.

He answered, ‘in 1965, why do you ask?’

'You were in my class!' I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely.

Then the ugly, old, bald, wrinkled, fat arsed, grey haired, decrepit, bastard asked … 'What subject did you teach?

Collapse Of Aztec Society Linked To Catastrophic Salmonella Outbreak

Collapse Of Aztec
The Spanish invasion of Mexico, depicted in a nineteenth-century illustration, was followed by a series of epidemics of unknown cause.

One of the worst epidemics in human history, a sixteenth-century pestilence that devastated Mexico’s native population, may have been caused by a deadly form of salmonella from Europe, a pair of studies suggest.

In one study, researchers say they have recovered DNA of the stomach bacterium from burials in Mexico linked to a 1540s epidemic that killed up to 80% of the country's native inhabitants.

An Irish Divorce

An Irish Divorce
The mother-in-law arrives home from shopping to find her son-in-law, Paddy, in a steaming rage and hurriedly packing his suitcase. "What happened Paddy?" she asks anxiously.

"What happened? I'll tell you what happened! I sent an e-mail to my wife telling her I was coming home today from my fishing trip. I get home and guess what I found? Your daughter, my wife, Jean, naked with Joe Murphy in our marital bed! This is unforgivable! The end of our marriage. I'm done. I'm leaving forever!"

"Ah now, calm down, calm down Paddy!" says his mother-in-law. "There is something very odd going on here. Jean would never do such a thing! There must be a simple explanation. I'll go speak to her immediately and find out what happened.

Moments later, the mother-in-law comes back with a big smile. "Paddy, there I told you there must be a simple explanation. She never got your e-mail.”

The Dazzling Firefall Of Yosemite Has Returned

The Dazzling Firefall
The rare and stunningly beautiful phenomenon only occurs during a two-week window in February.

While winter in Yosemite National Park offers a spectacular opportunity to witness the national park's unparalleled beauty, there's one phenomenon in particular worth planning a trip around.

During the last two weeks of February, the angle of the setting sun transforms the 2,130-foot Horsetail Falls into what many have nicknamed "The Yosemite Firefall." The effect is so convincing that it almost appears as if lava is pouring out of the granite cliffside. For photographers, this spectacle is not to be missed, with many snatching up the best spots to catch the phenomenon as early as 5 a.m. each morning.

As Japan Ages, Menus Adapt to Finding the Gourmet in Purées

As Japan Ages
YOKOHAMA, Japan — The 94-year-old man had come for lunch at a Chinese restaurant, and he was determined to make the most of his squid and leek stir-fry.

Eigo Shinoda, a former shipbuilding executive and fighter pilot in World War II, spends his days in a wheelchair and has trouble eating solid food. But that was no impediment as he dug into his meal with a plastic turquoise spoon recently.

That’s because the staff at the restaurant, Kaze no Oto, had puréed the stir-fry in a food processor and served it to his group, which was from a nearby nursing home. While it didn’t look that appetizing, it did the trick for Mr. Shinoda. He finished by licking his plate clean.

The Taxi Driver

The Taxi Driver
A woman and her 12-year-old son were riding in a taxi in Detroit. It was raining and all the prostitutes were standing under awnings. "Mom," said the boy, "what are all those women doing?"

"They're waiting for their husbands to get off work," she replied.

The taxi driver turns around and says, "Geez lady, why don't you tell him the truth? They're hookers, boy! They have sex with men for money."

The little boy's eyes get wide and he says, "Is that true Mom?"

His mother, glaring hard at the driver, answers "Yes."

After a few minutes the kid asks, "Mom, if those women have babies, what happens to them?"

She replies, "Well, most of them become taxi drivers."

A Little Deaf

A Little Deaf
Twin sisters just turned one hundred years old in St. Luke's Nursing Home and the editor of the local rag, "The Post," told a photographer to get over there and take the pictures of these 100 year old twin ladies.

One of the twins was hard of hearing and the other could hear quite well.

The photographer asked them to sit on the sofa and the deaf one said to her twin, "What did he say?” He said, "WE GOTTA SIT OVER THERE ON THE SOFA!" said the other.

”Now get a little closer together," said the cameraman.

Again, "What did he say?” ”HE SAYS SQUEEZE TOGETHER A LITTLE." So they wiggled up close to each other.

"Just hold on for a bit longer, I've got to focus a little," said the photographer.

Yet again, "What did he say?” "HE SAYS HE'S GONNA FOCUS!"

With a big grin the deaf twin shouted out, "Oh my God, both of us?"

Pub Regular Is 93
AN OLD sailor called Nelson is claiming the title of Britain’s longest-serving pub regular after going to the same local for more than EIGHTY years.

Nelson Foyle has been drinking in the same pub, the Dog & Gun, since he was 12

In the decades since he has gone in several times a week – apart from a break with the Royal Navy during the war – to enjoy a few pints of his favourite bitter.

In that time Nelson reckons he has sunk around 40,000 pints.

Not Getting Enough Sleep? Camping In February Might Help

Not Getting Enough Sleep?
It's tempting to keep the computer running late and promise yourself an extra 30 minutes of bed rest in the morning. It's tempting to do it again the next night, too. But sleep inevitably loses out to getting up early for school or work.

There's a simple way to combat this: End all artificial lights at night for at least a weekend and drench your eyes in natural morning light, says Kenneth Wright, a professor of integrative physiology at the University of Colorado, Boulder and senior author on a study on resetting sleep cycles. The most straightforward way of doing this is to forbid any electronics on a camping trip.

All About The Look

All About The Look
Two guys, one old, one young, are pushing their carts around Wal-Mart when they collide.

The old guy says to the young guy, "Sorry about that. I'm looking for my wife, and I guess I wasn't paying attention to where I was going."

The young guy says, "That's OK, it's a coincidence. I'm looking for my wife, too. I can't find her and I'm getting a little desperate."

The old guy says, "Well, maybe I can help you find her. What does she look like?"

The young guy says, "Well, she is 27 yrs. old, tall, with red hair, blue eyes, is buxom and wearing no bra, long legs, and is wearing short shorts. What does your wife look like?'

To which the old guy says, "Doesn't matter, --- let's look for yours."

Amazing Tokyo Restaurant Offers All-You-Can-Drink Plans Starting At Less Than A Buck

Amazing Tokyo Restaurant
This may be the best deal ever for fans of beer and shochu sours who’re tight on cash and time.

One of Japanese advertisers’ favorite phrases is “one coin,” used to describe goods and services which can be purchased using a single yen coin. Usually, they’re referring to the 500-yen (US$4.30) coin, the largest-denomination piece currently in circulation.

So when we heard about a Japanese restaurant chain that offers all-you-can-drink beer, wince, and shochu cocktails for “one coin,” we were pretty excited. Then, when we found out that prices for the deal start at just 100 yen (US$0.86), we were out the door.

Almost There

Almost There
A married Irishman went into the confessional and said to his priest, 'I almost had an affair with another woman.'

The priest said, 'What do you mean, almost?'

The Irishman said, 'Well, we got undressed and rubbed together, but then I stopped.'

The priest said, 'Rubbing together is the same as putting it in. You're not to see that woman again. For your penance, say five Hail Mary's and put $50 in the poor box.'

The Irishman left the confessional, said his prayers, and then walked over to the poor box. He paused for a moment and then started to leave.

The priest, who was watching, quickly ran over to him saying, 'I saw that. You didn't put any money in the poor box!'

The Irishman replied, 'Yeah, but I rubbed the $50 on the box, and according to you, that's the same as putting it in!'

Earth's Most Typical Person

Meeting Earth's Most Typical Person
The U.N. says the world's population will reach 7 billion on Monday - evidence that humanity has hit quite a growth spurt -- from our first billion in 1804, to 4 billion in 1974, and shooting up to 6 billion just two decades later.

With all the differences out there, CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann in search of a familiar face.

Kaitlin Yarnell's team at National Geographic searched population data for humanity's most common characteristics to create a profile of Earth's most typical person.

Would it be a he or she? Young or old? What race and religion?

Details on CBS.

Another NDP Blunder?

MLA Renaud’s Telephone Experiment Failure

manintree

"As an online participant re: MLA Renaud’s telephone open house, I waited for about an hour before being listed for a chance to ask a question of Ms. Renaud. Then, waited until the autodialed session was over, and never did have a chance to ask my question.

The whole session during this timeframe was all sugar and spice, and not much spice/substance. I guess now, Ms. Renaud can say that she listens to voters.

Somehow, it sounded so hollow, especially when I know a friend tried to no avail for several months on a near daily basis to have a chat in her constituency office. Is not technology wonderful. We don't even have to face anyone to indicate “lip service”."

0213-premierthreats-gr
SINC SAYS:

The post above was made by a local resident on our public forum Monday evening. This type of pre-staged, NDP controlled event is little more than propaganda. It is all part of Premier Notley’s ill fated assault on the people of Alberta. Union support front and centre, taxed to the limit, destruction of small business and on it goes.

Rachel’s dream of a second term is just that, a dream. Never have I ever seen such outright rejection of a party by the public, running even to feelings near hatred. See the graph left from the Edmonton Journal, which shows Albertans unprecedented distaste for Notley and her NDP.

It appears Renaud only accepted friendly questions from local residents. One is left to wonder just how many who actually got through with a question, were pre-screened for favourable content? The Alberta NDP seem likely to suffer a crushing defeat at the polls in 2019. Only then can the work of undoing the damage they have wrought begin.

Owl Of A Sudden, Long-Eared Owls Are Everywhere

Owl Of A Sudden
Long-eared owls don't actually have long ears. They're named after tall, feathery tufts on their heads that look like ears. Their real ones are hidden under facial feathers, and for many North American long-eared owls, those ears must have been burning lately.

Normally secretive birds, long-eared owls have become a sensation this winter around Chicago, where they've dazzled people by suddenly appearing in unusually large numbers. This is known as an irruption, the technical name for any abrupt surge in a bird population, especially outside its typical haunts. It's unclear where exactly all these long-eared owls came from, but the species is known to breed across a northern swath of the U.S. from Maine to California, plus much of Canada.

More on the mother nature network.

Lyme Disease Awareness

Federal Framework for Lyme Disease Draft

73523e79-c3f1-481e-bda5-d660aecab654
In May of 2016, Susan McInnis, (LDAA President) attended the Conference to Develop a Federal Framework for Lyme Disease in Ottawa, on behalf of Albertans. Jim Wilson, Felix & Janet Sperling, Gwen Barlee, and more attended on behalf of of CanLyme. Provincial organizations from across the country were in attendance. Next steps were to develop a draft that would incorporate remarks at the conference that include these stakeholders as well as others.

This draft was published on February 7 without further consultation from stakeholders.
This is in violation of the intention of the federal guidelines - collaboration.

Please read this link from CanLyme and participate in sending the Public Health Agency of Canada your feedback. CanLyme is asking that you cc them in your feedback, LDAA asks that you do the same for us so that we can ensure we are all heard. (info@AlbertaLyme.org)
.

Lyme patients and advocates have come too far to slow down now. Now is the time to really step up and be heard! Let's respond clearly, concisely, and professionally. Use precise quotes from the draft to make your points strong. If you have a relationship with your MP, this is a good time to inform him/her of this most recent event.

Change happens when enough people speak up in the same voice!

‘UFO On Truck With Police Escort Seen Being Driven At Night’

UFO On Truck With Police
A STUNNED eyewitness watched open-jawed as a "UFO" was apparently seen being transported by a police convoy on the back on a truck at night near a top-secret US Airforce (USAF) base.

The alleged sighting was reported by an unnamed man to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) in the US.

The witness says he saw the "flying saucer" convoy being driven on a road in the Fort Leonard Wood area of Missouri on February 1 at 10.15pm local time.

Kid Vs Barber

violeta-s-barber-shop-and-haircut-salon-now-at-christiano-s-hair-URs3mA-clipart
A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer. ‘This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it you.’

The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, ‘Which do you want, son?’ The boy takes the quarters and leaves.

‘What did I tell you?’ said the barber. ‘That kid never learns!’ Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. ‘Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?’

The boy licked his cone and replied, ‘Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!’

Mailman Builds Porch Ramp For Sweet Old Dog

Mailman Builds Porch Ramp
Thanks to countless comic strips and TV episodes, we tend to think of dogs and mail carriers as sworn enemies, locked in a bitter battle.

These depictions of canine versus carrier may be grounded in reality, but they're not always true, and you need look no further than the story of Jim Kramer and Tashi, a 14-year-old black lab, to see that.

Kramer, a Colorado mail carrier, first met Tashi a few years ago, and they two became friends.

Lobster Blood The Next Best Thing To Treat Warts, Shingles

Lobster Blood Could Be
If you have a skin ailment the next time you bring home lobster for dinner, you might want to consider your options before you drop it in the pot.

Lobster industry researchers in Maine say they’ve determined that uncooked lobster hemolymph, or blood, has medicinal properties that can be used to treat viruses that cause warts and shingles.

What’s more, they have put their money where their mouths are by developing a lobster blood-based retail skin care cream called LobsteRx.

A Lesson Learned

A Lesson Learned
A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings. The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs.

When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbour. Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you $800 to drop that towel.'

After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob, after a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves. The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs.

When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, 'Who was that?'

'It was Bob the next door neighbour,' she replies.

'Great,' the husband says, 'did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?'

'Invisible' Train Set To Roll In 2018

'Invisible' Train Set To Roll In 2018
(CNN) - It’s a train out of a "Hunger Games" world.

Except it could actually happen.

A nearly invisible train designed by one of Japan's leading architects is scheduled to debut in Tokyo in 2018.

Designed by award winner Kazuyo Sejima, the commuter train uses semi-reflective and semi-transparent materials to blend into the scenery whether it's traveling through the city or the countryside, according to a Newsweek report.

The Hospital Bill

The Hospital Bill
A man suffered a serious heart attack while shopping in a store. The store clerks called an ambulance when they saw him collapse to the floor.

The paramedics rushed the man to the nearest hospital where he had emergency open heart bypass surgery.

He awakened from the surgery to find himself in the care of nuns at the Catholic Hospital.

A nun was seated next to his bed holding a clipboard loaded with several forms, and a pen. She asked him how he was going to pay for his treatment. "Do you have health insurance?" she asked.

He replied in a raspy voice, "No health insurance."

The nun asked, "Do you have money in the bank?"

He replied, "No money in the bank."

Do you have a relative who could help you with the payments?" asked the irritated nun.

He said, "I only have a spinster sister and she is a nun.”

The nun became agitated and announced loudly, "Nuns are not spinsters! Nuns are married to God."

The man replied, "Perfect. Send the bill to my brother-in-law."

Movies Get Immersive: Indoor Drive-In Coming To Nashville

Movies Get Immersive
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Movie-goers in Nashville are in for a unique experience as plans have been unveiled for an indoor drive-in with a 1960s feel.

The “August Moon Drive-In” is slated to open at the intersection of James Robertson Parkway and Interstate 24 in 2018. It's slated to be built in Main Event Parking, which is a lot with 1,000 spaces.

The drive-in won't reduce the number of parking spots, but rather re-arrange them.

But this is not your typical drive-in.

Complete story on Fox 17.

80 Salisbury Presentation
To St. Albert City Council

80 Salisbury
Mayor And Council:

It has been a while, but I feel compelled to present today in support of the previous speaker, Mr. Craig Skarupa, in addressing a wrong that has been inflicted upon not only him and his family, but also an uncertain number of St. Albert citizens living in proximity to 80 Salisbury Avenue.

The inherent ramifications are not only financial (ie. property values) but more importantly include physical harm, possibly being of life and death proportions. The pertinent details have been made known to all of you on council and in the administration, but to a very limited extent with the public, due in no small measure to actions and inactions, whether by design or default, on your part and those who came before you.

While no person can rightly lay blame individually or collectively on any of you for creating this fiasco, it is by virtue of your election to public office that you have inherited the problem, and are legally and morally bound to provide adequate redress in an effective and timely manner.

The neglectful sweeping under the rug and stonewalling of the past must come to an abrupt end. So too, does the increasingly frequent practice of secreting yourselves behind the curtains of in-camera sessions, despite what your in-house legal advisors might otherwise be telling you.

Being seasoned politicians, I need not remind you that 2017 is a municipal election year. Unless you do not plan to run for re-election or perhaps have even loftier political goals, in the coming months whatever you say, or do not say, do, or do not do, will be remembered and reflected at the ballot box.

Of late, there have been editorials and commentaries in the local press admonishing certain individuals on council for persistently wasting precious time on matters that are deemed to be petty. I will not at this time, argue such reasoning or lack of the same, other than to say that others among you seem to think nothing of devoting significant financial and human resources to matters such as a bee-keeping bylaw as evidenced by item 13.3 under council motions in today’s agenda.

I believe most reasonable beings would agree that the 80 Salisbury Avenue matter should at the very least, be regarded as being of equal importance.

As an individual citizen and elector, I am neither suggesting nor requesting, but rather demanding that you render the decisions necessary for ensuring that appropriate actions are immediately undertaken to finally bring an end to this travesty!

Murray Lambert
St. Albert

SINC SAYS:
The forgoing presentation was made to city council February 6, 2017 in support of the Skarupa family and their campaign to reach some conclusion to the issue of possible contamination from a commercial business that operated at 80 Salisbury Avenue. You can watch the presentation on the video of that meeting on the city website. I watched the presentation live and you will note that Mr. Lambert pauses to make mention that, ‘he did not have the attention of all members of council,’ during his presentation. That comment was directed at the mayor, Lambert told SAP later, who apparently was absorbed with other tasks and not seemingly interested in the matter at hand. Odd indeed, given it concerns a property nearby the mayor’s own property on the same avenue. Mr. Skarupa’s presentation, mentioned in Lambert’s presentation above, can also be viewed on the city website near the beginning of that city council meeting or you can read the entire text of it here.

Below are two pictures of the building the city allowed to be built at 80 Salisbury Avenue. Does this look even remotely like a residential garage folks? Who at the time, was responsible for this monstrosity and failed to ask why such a huge garage was being contemplated? Why won't city council do the right thing and take immediate steps to clear up this matter once and for all?

Nothing Says 'I Love You' Like Flowers Made Of Dried-Out Beef

Nothing Says
The lovely roses in the picture are made with beef jerky, the brainchild of a company called Say It With Beef.

But what is it you're hoping to say, and to whom? I think that depends on the situation. This "broquet" as its creators are calling it, can say many things. It can say to your Valentine, "Flowers die quickly but beef jerky lasts for a really, really long time." It can say, "You're a dude and I had no idea what to buy you. Have some beef." Or perhaps they're just a way to congratulate a guy on a new job, bachelor pad or car.

Chinese Factory Replaces 90% Of Human Workers With Robots

Chinese Factory Replaces
After a factory in Dongguan, China, replaced most of its workers with robots, it witnessed a spectacular rise in productivity.

While some of the world’s leaders are obsessed with keeping people out of their country, an unspoken entity is slowly but certainly taking our jobs: robots. It’s been long discussed that robots and computers will start taking our jobs “in the near future” — well that near future is upon us and we’re not really prepared to deal with it. Of course, some jobs are more at risk than others, are few are as threatened as factory jobs.

According to Monetary Watch, the Changying Precision Technology Company focuses on the production of mobile phones and uses automated production lines. The factory used to be run by 650 employees, but now just 60 people get the entire job done, while robots take care of the rest. Luo Weiqiang, the general manager, says the number of required employees will drop to 20 at one point. Despite this reduction in staff, not only is the factory producing more equipment (a 250% increase), but it’s also ensuring better quality.

The ‘Untranslatable’ Emotions You Never Knew You Had

The ‘Untranslatable’ Emotions
Have you ever felt a little mbuki-mvuki – the irresistible urge to “shuck off your clothes as you dance”? Perhaps a little kilig – the jittery fluttering feeling as you talk to someone you fancy? How about uitwaaien – which encapsulates the revitalising effects of taking a walk in the wind?

These words – taken from Bantu, Tagalog, and Dutch – have no direct English equivalent, but they represent very precise emotional experiences that are neglected in our language. And if Tim Lomas at the University of East London has his way, they might soon become much more familiar.
