Tough Teacher

Tough Teacher
After retiring, a former Sergeant in an infantry unit took a new job as a high school teacher.

Just before the school year started, he injured his back. He was required to wear a light plaster cast around the upper part of his body.

Fortunately, the cast fit under his shirt and wasn't noticeable when he wore his suit coat.

On the first day of class, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in the school. The smart-ass punks, having already heard the new teacher was a former soldier, were leery of him and he knew they would be testing his discipline in the classroom.

Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, the new teacher opened the window wide and sat down at his desk.

With a strong breeze blowing it made his tie flap.
He picked up a stapler and stapled the tie to his chest.

Dead silence.

The rest of the year went smoothly.

14 Famous People Who Mysteriously Disappeared

14 Famous People
Have you seen these people? (Probably not.)

The Lost Roanoke Colony. The Dyatlov Pass Incident. The death of Natalie Wood. The Black Dahlia. The Bermuda Triangle. Bigfoot. Did Tony Soprano die at the end of "The Sopranos"?

We love a good unsolved mystery, and unexplained disappearances that have managed to baffle historians have also intrigued the general public. Unlike the FBI's decades-old search for the remains of a certain convict/labor organizer from Detroit, we've successfully managed to track down 14 missing people of note, including six particularly intriguing head-scratchers followed by a few more names that you may recognize.

More on the mother nature network.

Clearing Snow Off Boulevards

SnowPlow_zps7cc8dcfd.gif~c200
Hi: This is not an April fool joke but it’s close.

Late last week public works, apparently short of snow, started taking their heavy snow plows up onto boulevards and clearing the snow, leaving bare grass and some damage. Even  plowing around trees and light polls which is time consuming.

Four calls yesterday and two early this a.m.  Some one even came to my door to show me his photos on his smart phone.

As one resident at the bottom of Glenmore said, “If you are short of snow, come to the bottom of the hill on our crescent and you can have all you want. I have a hell of a time turning off Grosvenor onto Glenmore at the bottom because the wind blew in a lot of snow there’. I’ve lived on Glenmore for over half a century and never saw this before.

Bob Russell
Councillor
St. Albert

SINC SAYS:

This email was sent to city manager Kevin Scoble Sunday morning as well as copies to his fellow members of council, SAP and other local residents. Norm Harley of the city responded to Bob’s email with these comments:

Bob,

I strongly agree with you.

Not only is this a make work project, as you said, it is causing damage to the grass and trees.

The dumbest of us all, including me, must realize that grass and trees need moisture to make it thru the winter.

We drive thou the crescents in north ridge the other day. The snow is hard pack you could barely drive thru. If city crews need something worthwhile to do, perhaps they could clean some of the crescents.

The Snotty Receptionist

The Snotty Receptionist
Yesterday I had an appointment to see the urologist for a prostate exam. Of course I was a bit on edge because all my friends have either gone under the knife or had those pellets implanted.

The waiting room was filled with patients. As I approached the receptionist’s desk, I noticed that she was a large unfriendly woman who looked like a Sumo wrestler.

I gave her my name, and in a very loud voice, she said,
“YES, I HAVE YOUR NAME HERE. YOU WANT TO SEE THE DOCTOR ABOUT IMPOTENCE, RIGHT?

All the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to look at me, a now very embarrassed man.

But as usual, I recovered quickly, and in an equally loud voice replied,
“NO, I’VE COME TO INQUIRE ABOUT A SEX CHANGE OPERATION, BUT I DON’T WANT THE SAME DOCTOR THAT DID YOURS.”

The room erupted in applause!

Don’t mess with old retired guys!

3D TV Is Officially Dead

3D TV Is Officially Dead
Sometimes the consumer electronics industry tries to sell a new technology that consumers thoroughly reject — and as a result, it goes on the trash pile of products that were "before their time," to put it nicely.

Here's a great example: 3D TV, which is officially dead. There are no more major TV-makers that make 3D TVs anymore.

The last two TV-makers to build 3D functionality into their sets, LG and Sony, will not build any new sets this year that can show 3D movies and TV shows, CNET reports.

Sunday Morning Sex

Sunday Morning Sex
Upon hearing that her elderly grandfather had just passed away, Katie went straight to visit her 95 year-old grandmother and comfort her.

When she asked how her grandfather had died, her grandmother replied, "He had a heart attack while we were making love on Sunday morning."

Horrified, Kate told her grandmother that two people nearly 100 years old having sex would surely be asking for trouble.

"Oh, no my dear," replied granny. "Many years ago, realizing our advanced age, we figured out the best time to do it was when the church bells would start to ring. It was just the right rhythm. Nice and slow even. Nothing too strenuous, simply in time with the Ding and the Dong."

She paused to wipe away a tear, and continued, "He'd still be alive if the Ice Cream truck hadn't come along."

Playbook For Apple's Next Big Thing

Playbook For Apple
Apple is the most valuable company in the world, and it makes a lot of profit, but its long-term future depends on it coming up with a new product, a new "one more thing."

The Apple Watch, which has been selling poorly for Apple, isn't going to do it.

Apple needs a new platform. And Apple CEO Tim Cook knows it. That's why he's been dropping hint after hint that Apple's next major technology initiative is augmented reality — basically, integrating software into the real world.

What is AR?

PHOTO ENFORCEMENT CONTINUES
IN DORMANT CITY PLAYGROUNDS

Winter has arrived. Frigid temperatures are here, and the children are nowhere to be seen on the abandoned snow-covered soccer field along Forest Drive. In St. Albert this only means one thing. Since no one is around there is a lot more room to park the photo enforcement trucks to enforce this abandoned playground zone with inadequate signs.

The two Ford trucks are out in full force this winter enforcing this dormant playground:
Photo Radar GreyFord1500X1100

  • Dark grey Ford XTR Lic # BNB 5662
Photo Radar White Ford1500
  • White Ford XTR Lic # BNB 5661

Their black GMC SUV and white Jeep are keeping busy in other locations in St. Albert.

Municipal Enforcement shamelessly continues to enforce these abandoned playground zones even though there is no shortage of legitimate locations in which to conduct photo enforcement. Contrary to certain opinion, Photo Enforcement is still an effective tool to curb speeding if used appropriately and fairly. Enforcing playgrounds in the winter is a clear example of inappropriate and unfair.

Jardine Security has been contracted to respond to sightings of Photo Radar vehicles in vacant playground zones this winter. Call Jardine for immediate response to monitor photo enforcement activity. Call
while the photo enforcement vehicles are still there.

The Plan To Test Cities’ Sewage For Drugs Is A New Form Of Mass Surveillance

The Plan To Test
Nearly every drug you snort, inject, smoke, butt-plug, vaporize or freebase eventually ends up back in the water supply via your excrement. The fish love it—well, maybe not the ones mutating from it. But apparently crabs and trout aren't the only ones sifting through your waste.

Across the globe, researchers at wastewater treatment plants are testing for psychoactive substances passed by drug users through their feces and urine. The data can be incredibly valuable, letting scientists and law enforcement quickly track drug use trends and identify new substances on the market. It can also measure the impact of drug policy strategies, even highlight which days of the week drug use spikes (cocaine on the weekends, anyone?).

Details on Motherboard.

Donald’s Solution

Donald’s Solution
A young man named Donald bought a horse from a farmer for $250.

The farmer agreed to deliver the horse the next day. The next day, the farmer drove up to

Donald's house and said, “Sorry son, but I have some bad news, the horse died.”

Donald replied, “Well, then just give me my money back.”

The farmer said, “Can’t do that. I went and spent it already.”

Donald said, “Ok, then, just bring me the dead horse.”

The farmer asked, “What ya gonna do with him?”

Donald said, “I’m going to raffle him off.”

The farmer said, “You can’t raffle off a dead horse!”

Donald said, “Sure I can, Watch me. I just won’t tell anybody he’s dead.”

A month Later, the farmer met up with Donald and asked, “What happened with that dead horse?”

Donald said, “I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at five dollars a piece and made a profit of $2495.”

The farmer said, “Didn’t anyone complain?”

Donald said, “Just the guy who won. So, I gave him his five dollars back.”

Donald is soon moving into the White House.

Arrival Of First Humans In North America Happened Earlier Than Believed

Arrival Of First Humans
Until now, it was believed that the earliest settlement date of North America was 14,000 years ago. This figure has now been demonstrated to have been 10,000 years earlier. The first entry of humans into North America across the Bering Strait is now estimated at 24,000 Before Present (BP), and happened at the height of the last ice age or Last Glacial Maximum. This estimate has been made according to the earliest dated archaeological sites.

Ariane Burke, a professor in Université de Montréal’s Department of Anthropology, and her doctoral student Lauriane Bourgeon, with the contribution of Dr. Thomas Higham, Deputy Director of Oxford University’s Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, has demonstrated this beyond any doubt.

Archaeologist Jacques Cinq-Mars excavated the Bluefish Caves, located on the banks of the Bluefish River in northern Yukon near the Alaska border, between 1977 and 1987. Artifacts from these caves were used by the researchers to make their discovery. They made the hypothesis that human settlement in the region dated as far back as 30,000 BP based on radiocarbon dating of animal bones.

Shutting Ringling Circus Will Throw 462 Out Of Work

Shutting Ringling Circus
ELLENTON — A sixth-generation circus performer, Ivan Vargas has been part of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for 12 years, nine of them as a show-opening clown.

But his costume weighed heavy and he had a tough time jollying his face with makeup Sunday, his first performance after learning that the circus' 146-year run is coming to an end.

"I'm sad and devastated, because I was born and raised on Ringling," said Vargas, 26. "This is my home. I have to leave my home, and all my friends have to leave their home."

Ringling's parent company, Feld Entertainment, acknowledged Monday that closing down the circus will throw 462 people out of work.

Welcome to Gothic, Colorado—one of the coldest places in the United States. This ghost town has been abandoned since the 1920s, but there is at least one person who still calls it home. For more than 40 years, current resident billy barr has lived in a small cabin, recording data about the snowpack to pass the time. In this short film, Morgan Heim of Day’s Edge Productions profiles the legendary local who inadvertently provided scientists with a treasure trove of climate change data.

North Americans Spent $53.3 Billion On Marijuana Last Year, Most Of It Illegally

North Americans Spent
A new report estimates consumers spent $53.3 billion on cannabis in North America last year.

The first-of-its-kind analysis, compiled by ArcView Market Research, spans legal, medical and illegal marijuana markets across both the United States and Canada. At around $46 billion, the illegal market constituted 87 percent of marijuana sales in 2016 (a decrease from 90 percent in 2015), dwarfing both medical and legal sales.

The marijuana investment and research firm provided a 25-page executive summary of its fifth annual State of Legal Marijuana Markets to The Huffington Post Tuesday, ahead of the full report’s release in February.

Points To Ponder
1. The location of your mailbox shows you how far away from your house you can be in a robe before you start looking like a mental patient.

2. My therapist said that my narcissism causes me to misread social situations. I’m pretty sure she was hitting on me.

3. My 60 year kindergarten reunion is coming up soon and I’m worried about the 175 pounds I've gained since then.

4. I always wondered what the job application is like at Hooters. Do they just give you a bra and say, “Here, fill this out?”

5. Denny’s has a slogan, “If it’s your birthday, the meal is on us.” If you’re in Denny’s and it’s your birthday, your life sucks!

6. If I make you breakfast in bed, a simple “Thank you” is all I need ... not all this, “How did you get into my house?” business!

7. The pharmacist asked me my birth date again today. I’m pretty sure she’s going to get me something.

8. On average, an American man will have sex two to three times a week. Whereas, a Japanese man will have sex only one or two times a year. This is very upsetting news to me. I had no idea I was Japanese.

9. I can’t understand why women are okay that JC Penny has an older women’s clothing line named, “Sag Harbor.”

10. I think it's pretty cool how Chinese people made a language entirely out of tattoos.

11. What is it about a car that makes people think we can't see them pick their noses?

12. Money can’t buy happiness, but it keeps the kids in touch!

13. The reason Mayberry was so peaceful and quiet was because nobody was married. Andy, Aunt Bea, Barney, Floyd, Howard, Goober, Gomer, Sam, Earnest T Bass, Helen, Thelma Lou, Clara and, of course, Opie were all single. The only married person was Otis, and he stayed drunk.

A Brilliant Idea To Get Rid Of Produce Stickers

A Brilliant Idea
I have a few bunches of bananas in my fruit bowl, and each individual banana has a produce sticker on it. The bunch that has yet to be torn into also has plastic wrapped around the stems and a plastic band wrapped around the entire bunch, which I've been told is there to make sure grocery store cashiers realize they're ringing up organic bananas and not conventional ones.

That's a lot of plastic, and it's virtually unavoidable if I want to buy bananas at a local grocery store. Many produce items come with a sticker on each individual piece. However, an end to that sticky, plastic waste may be near if a new a trial experiment in Sweden to replace produce stickers with laser marks is successful.

Romantic Texting

Romantic Texting
An elderly couple had just learned how to send text messages on their mobile phones. The wife was a romantic type and the husband was more of a no-nonsense guy.

One afternoon the wife went out to meet a friend for coffee.

She decided to send her husband a romantic text message and she wrote:

"If you are sleeping, send me your dreams. If you are laughing, send me your smile. If you are eating, send me a bite. If you are drinking, send me a sip. If you are crying, send me your tears. I love you."

The husband texted back to her: "I'm on the toilet. Please advise."

Africa 'Witnessing Birth Of A New Ocean'

Africa 'witnessing birth
Africa is witnessing the birth of a new ocean, according to scientists at the Royal Society.

Geologists working in the remote Afar region of Ethiopia say the ocean will eventually split the African continent in two, though it will take about 10 million years.

Lead researcher Tim Wright who is presenting the research at the Royal Society's Summer Exhibition, described the events as "truly incredible”.

Used to understanding changes in the planet on timescales of millions of years, the international team of scientists including Dr Wright have seen amazing changes in Afar in the past five years, where the continent is cracking open, quite literally underneath their feet.

How East And West Think In Profoundly Different Ways

How East And West
As Horace Capron first travelled through Hokkaido in 1871, he searched for a sign of human life among the vast prairies, wooded glades and threatening black mountains. “The stillness of death reigned over this magnificent scene,” he later wrote. “Not a leaf was stirred, not the chirping of a bird or a living thing.” It was, he thought, a timeless place, straight out of pre-history.

“How amazing it is that this rich and beautiful country, the property of one of the oldest and most densely populated nations of the world… should have remained so long unoccupied and almost as unknown as the African deserts,” he added.

This was Japan’s frontier – its own version of the American ‘Wild West’. The northernmost of Japan’s islands, Hokkaido was remote, with a stormy sea separating it from Honshu. Travellers daring to make the crossing would have then had to endure the notoriously brutal winters, rugged volcanic landscape and savage wildlife. And so the Japanese government had largely left it to the indigenous Ainu people, who survived through hunting and fishing.

All that would change in the mid-19th Century.

Was City’s Phone Poll Tainted?

SA City Facility Spending Polls
Raise Some Serious Questions

A pair of polls taken locally seem to point out that the city’s much touted telephone poll on what one of three facilities should be built, might be in question.

The city claimed in their poll conducted by an outside firm that there was pressing need to build a new library. But how accurate was that poll?

The Poliwings group conducted a poll over a two day period on Facebook with these results from 23 respondents.

Screen Shot 2017-01-21 at 3.17.58 AM

We here on SAP decided to follow suit and created a similar poll with startlingly different results as you can see below.

Screen Shot 2017-01-21 at 3.14.58 AM

The main difference in the two polls were the number of respondents, 23 for the Poliwings poll and more than double that in our poll at 54. While we admit that the sample is only 13.5 percent of the 400 polled by the city on SAP, the two polls combined 77 respondents represent nearly 20 percent of the participants in the city's own telephone poll. It is an alarming result the city should investigate immediately.

The Poliwings poll, like the city poll seemed to show a pressing need for a new library. It should be noted that members of the Poliwings group meet monthly and have close ties to a number of city council members and city officials who regularly attend these meetings.

Life
Not so in the SAP poll. Our poll clearly showed that there was no pressing need for any one of the three facilities by city taxpayers. Instead it became evident that average citizens want no part in building any one of the three facilities.

The city would be wise to do their own online poll to confirm or deny these two very different results. The cost would be nothing and results might just surprise them. That selective phone poll of theirs, gave citizens no option to reject all three options, a fatal flaw in the polling method.

The city should conduct a proper online poll to see if their results mirror the phone poll. Our bet it is that it would not.

Spending as much money as they are proposing in depressed economic times is not the wish of the people we asked.

With the current cloud hanging over this council facing a municipal inspection and a lame duck mayor, apparently now more interested in becoming a provincial political leader than focusing on these important decisions, now is not the time to plunge ahead. These decisions directly affect local taxpayers, making it incumbent on council to tread carefully with the ministry looking over their shoulders.

old reporter small
This council has lost the confidence of the people who elected them and any major spending decisions should be left until the completion of the inspection by the ministry of municipal affairs. They have little support from the public until that inspection is completed.

Try your own poll city council, and see just how much mistrust in your ability to spend money wisely exists among voters. It might just surprise you all.

Using Propane Heaters In Ice Shacks

heater
On January16th of this year, four ice fishermen got sick and one passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning. Propane infrared heaters were being used.

These heaters emit exhaust while burning. The key for safety with this device is providing a continuous supply of fresh air by leaving a door or tent flap opening.

Some of the signs of CO poisoning can be sleepiness, nausea, a pinched feeling in your nose, and nose bleeds. A regular inspection of these appliances by qualified personnel is recommended to check for leaks and proper combustion.

The CO detectors are a good idea, but never depend on them to be 100 percent effective. Play safe out there.

The City Hunter

The City Hunter
A young man from the city went to visit his farmer uncle. For the first few days, the uncle showed him the usual things - chickens, cows, crops, etc. After three days, however, it was obvious that the nephew was getting bored, and the uncle was running out of things to amuse him with.

Finally, the uncle had an idea. "Why don't you grab a gun, take the dogs, and go shooting?"

This seemed to cheer the nephew up, and with enthusiasm, off he went, dogs in trail.

After a few hours, the nephew returned.

"How did you enjoy that?" asked the uncle.

"It was great!" exclaimed the nephew. "Got any more dogs?"

Groundbreaking UFO Video Just Released By Chilean Navy

Groundbreaking UFO Video
An exceptional nine-minute Navy video of a UFO displaying highly unusual behavior, studied by Chilean authorities for the last two years, is now being released to the public. The CEFAA - the Chilean government agency which investigates UFOs, or UAP (unidentified aerial phenomena), has been in charge of the investigation. Located within the DGAC, the equivalent of our FAA but under the jurisdiction of the Chilean Air Force, CEFAA has committees of military experts, technicians and academics from many disciplines. None of them have been able to explain the strange flying object captured by two experienced Navy officers from a helicopter.

Details and video in the Huffington Post.

Please Take Our Reader Poll
On Future SA Council Spending

The Poliwings discussion group over on Facebook are conducting a poll of its members on what projects city council should build in the future, a new aquatic facility, a new ice surface or a new branch library.

Since Poliwings is a closed group, we are asking these same questions on St. Albert’s Place. This site is available to the all members of the public. We feel this will provide a more balanced poll, taken without membership requirements. We will then see how the results compare from random residents of the community not associated with Poliwings.

Please take a moment to record your preferences, the results of which we will offer in comparison to the Poliwings poll. Click the left lower box to vote, the right to view results. The Poliwings poll results to 2:19 am this morning is posted below in a screen shot that so far, shows quite a different result from the general public. In our poll, a new library is the least desired facility and about 50 percent of readers want none of the three facilities built.

And for those criticizing me for calling Poliwings a closed group, I have enlarged their Facebook logo in a closer view (see arrow below near the bottom of the logo) which clearly points out that their group is advertised on Facebook as a "Closed Group". If that is wrong, I suggest they change it, but don't call ME misinformed, when it is members themselves who do not pay attention to their own logo. Group owners have assured me the group is open, but until they state differently on Facebook, I take the logo at face value, as do most casual readers of Facebook who are not members.

Cat Tracks Down Elderly Owner Weeks After She Was Sent To Live In A Nursing Home

Cat Tracks Down
In a remarkable tale of loyalty — one which underscores the deep bonds between pets and their owners — a fluffy grey-and-white cat was able to track down her elderly owner weeks after she was sent to live in a nursing home.

A few months back, when Nancy Cowen was placed under the care of staff at the Bramley House nursing facility in Westcott, England, she was forced to say goodbye to her loveable cat, named Cleo, whom she had adopted as a stray eight years earlier. Cowen’s family had given the feline to one of her neighbors to take care of, reports the Dorking Advertiser — but Cleo clearly had other plans.

Across The USA By Train For $213

Across The USA By Train For Just $213
Turns out, you don’t need a car to see America.

The American railroads are reminiscent of a bygone era. These were the trains that tamed the Wild West, fueled the Gold Rush, and served as the backbone of the Industrial Revolution. At its peak, it was the most luxurious mode of transportation that money could buy. Alas, the golden age of American railroads came to an end. Automobiles arrived and the airplane industry took off. Soon, many railroad companies had to cut losses and ceased their passenger services.

Today, the USA still has an excellent rail network for visitors that’ll take you to almost all the towns and cities a visitor would want to see. Arguably, the most scenic and historic of all the train routes in America is the cross-country journey from San Francisco to New York. As you climb through the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas, and further east through the heart of the Rockies, you may find it hard to disagree.

Services Rendered

Services Rendered
A doctor and a lawyer were talking at a party.

Their conversation was constantly interrupted by people describing their ailments and asking the doctor for free medical advice.

After an hour of this, the exasperated doctor asked the lawyer, "What do you do to stop people from asking you for legal advice when you're out of the office?"

"I give it to them," replied the lawyer, "and then I send them a bill."

The doctor was shocked, but agreed to give it a try.

The next day, still feeling slightly guilty, the doctor prepared the bills.

When he went to place them in his mailbox, he found a bill from the lawyer.

The Century-Long History of Philippe’s And Its Famous French Dip Sandwich

The Century-Long History
Throughout the day, the chefs constantly add water to the concentrated pan drippings. By the end, they mix half of the meat juices with a traditional stock and simmer it overnight, making for a rich and savory jus that gets used in the sandwiches the next day.

While there’s no clear answer to the ongoing debate as to which restaurant was the progenitor of the French dip — Philippe’s or Cole’s — what is certain is that both L.A. institutions serve it differently. Philippe’s sandwiches come pre-dipped with the gravy, while Cole’s sauce comes in a cup on the side for discretionary dunking.

How Japan Has Almost Eradicated Gun Crime

How Japan Has Almost
Japan has one of the lowest rates of gun crime in the world. In 2014 there were just six gun deaths, compared to 33,599 in the US. What is the secret?

If you want to buy a gun in Japan you need patience and determination. You have to attend an all-day class, take a written exam and pass a shooting-range test with a mark of at least 95%.

There are also mental health and drugs tests. Your criminal record is checked and police look for links to extremist groups. Then they check your relatives too - and even your work colleagues. And as well as having the power to deny gun licences, police also have sweeping powers to search and seize weapons.

The Traffic Stop

The Traffic Stop
A young woman was pulled over for speeding. As the Saskatchewan RCMP Officer walked to her car window, flipping open his ticket book, she said, "I bet you are going to sell me a ticket to the RCMP Ball."

He replied, 'Ma'am, Saskatchewan RCMP don't have balls.'

There was a moment of silence while she smiled, and he realized what he'd just said. He then closed his book, got back in his patrol car and drove off.

She was laughing too hard to start her car.

Wildlife Falls By 58% In 40 Years

World Wildlife Falls
Global wildlife populations have fallen by 58% since 1970, a report says.

The Living Planet assessment, by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and WWF, suggests that if the trend continues that decline could reach two-thirds among vertebrates by 2020.

The figures suggest that animals living in lakes, rivers and wetlands are suffering the biggest losses.

Human activity, including habitat loss, wildlife trade, pollution and climate change contributed to the declines.

The Country Priest

wooden-confessional-14535529
A new priest, born and raised in a small town in Saskatchewan, comes to serve in a city parish and is nervous about hearing confessions, so he asks the older priest to sit in on his sessions.

The new priest hears a couple of confessions, then the old priest asks him to step out of the confessional for a few suggestions.

The old priest suggests, "Cross your arms over your chest, and rub your chin with one hand and try saying things like 'yes, I see,' and 'yes, go on,' and 'I understand.'

The new priest crosses his arms, rubs his chin with one hand and repeats all the suggested remarks to the old priest.

The old priest says, "Now, don't you think that's a little better than slapping your knee and saying, "No shit, what happened next?"

When Should You Put Wine In Your Refrigerator?

When Should You Put Wine
The general rule that most of us follow when it comes to drinking wine is that white and rose wines should be served chilled and red wines should be served at room temperature. To get those white and rose wines chilled, many of us put them in our regular refrigerators and let them chill for hours, days or even longer. But is that a good idea?

I asked Tina Morey, a certified sommelier who runs the #winestudio education program, a few questions to help get a handle on the best way to use the refrigerator for wine.

The guidelines here are for a standard kitchen refrigerator, not a wine refrigerator.

Monopoly Holds Vote On Future Of Its Tokens

Monopoly Holds Vote
Everyone who has ever played Monopoly has their favourite token, from the top hat to the motor car or the Scottie dog.

But some long-standing pieces could soon be made redundant and replaced with more up to date symbols.

The hat, the shoe or even, heaven forbid, the much-loved Scottie, could be replaced by a mobile phone, a winking face emoji or even a hashtag.

Wink, Wink, Nudge, Nudge

Things I Find Hard To Believe

Wink, Wink, Nudge, Nudge

From the St. Albert Gazette, Wednesday January 11, 2017 entitled. “City will pay for municipal inspection”.

Wink One - From the story:

Councillor Heron:
“Heron said she was surprised by both the nature of the inspection, being of limited scope and focusing solely on the governance of the city. She said she made the motion in response to public concerns about how former Coun. Gilles Prefontaine was hired to a senior-manager role with the city while he was sitting on council.
“When I got the letter, it looks like they’re really going to focus on council, its behaviours and conduct in chambers, how we behave in committees and how we prepare,” she said.
“It doesn’t look like they’re going to focus anything on hiring practices in the city.”

Nudge Two - From the story:

Mayor Crouse:
“As for the timing of the news, and why it wasn’t made public before Christmas, he said he saw it and put it in his pile for discussion at the Jan. 9 meeting and didn’t think more of it. He reiterated that despite speculation to the contrary, the coming inspection did not factor into his announcement last week that he would not seek re-election.
“This is not part of my decision. It’s just not,” he said. “I have an interest in another career, and I can’t have that interest if I stay four more years as the mayor.””

How To Maintain A Healthy Level Of Insanity

How To Maintain A Healthy Level Of Insanity
1. At lunch time, sit in your parked car with sunglasses on and point a hair dryer at passing cars, and watch 'em slow down!

2. On all your cheque stubs, write 'For Marijuana'!

3. Skip down the street rather than walk and see how many looks you get.

4. Order a diet water whenever you go out to eat, with a serious face.

5. Sing along at the opera.

6. When the money comes out of the ATM, scream 'I won! I won!'

7. When leaving the Zoo, start running towards the parking lot, yelling, 'Run for your lives! They're loose!'

8. Tell your children over dinner: 'Due to the economy, we are going to have to let one of you go.

9. Pick up a box of condoms at the pharmacy, go to the counter and ask where the fitting room is.

And the final way to keep a healthy level of insanity:

10. Go to a large department store’s fitting room, drop your drawers to your ankles and yell out: “There’s no paper in here!"

Cold Weather Is Good For You (Really)

Cold Weather Is Good
With the onset of winter, the complaints about cold weather invariably begin. But if you're a moderately active, healthy person, cold weather doesn't have to be a negative. (Take it from someone who has spent time living away from the four seasons; you might very well find yourself missing the crackling clarity of a cold winter's day after your 340th balmy day.) There's plenty to love about cold weather, including the wonderful feeling of frigid air against your cheeks when your core is toasty warm.

But whether you agree with my appreciation of winter weather or not, there's plenty of evidence that cooler temperatures can be part of a healthy life.

Why Are Wedding Rings Worn On The Left Hand?

Why Are Wedding Rings
For years, couples have dedicated a single "ring" finger to romance when any other digit would do. A case of left side, strong side? Not according to history.

In medieval times, getting caught scribbling with one's left hand could earn accusations of being possessed and, during the Spanish Inquisition, lefties were more likely to be tortured or killed. In fact, the aversion touched many cultures, from the long-standing taboo in Islamic countries against eating and drinking with one’s left hand, to the expectation in ancient Japan that any wife who didn’t favor her right could be legally divorced on the spot, no questions asked. So why do we favor a finger on a cursed hand to symbolize lasting love?

The Raffle Prize

The Raffle Prize
A blonde and brunette were in a local Walmart when they decided to get in on the weekly charity raffle. They bought five tickets each at a dollar a pop.

The following week, when the raffle was drawn, each had won a prize.

The brunette won 1st place, a year's supply of gourmet spaghetti sauce and extra-long spaghetti.

The blonde won 6th prize, a toilet brush.

About a week or so had passed when the women met back at Wal-Mart. The blonde asked the brunette how she liked her prize, to which the brunette replied, "Great, I love spaghetti!"

"How about you? How's the toilet brush?"

"Not so good," replied the blonde. "I think I'm gonna go back to paper."

This Digestive Tracker Can Help You Control Your Farts

This Digestive Tracker
The AIRE by FoodMarble is a portable app-connected gadget that is able to analyze the amount of gas in your bloodstream the way a breathalyzer would monitor your blood alcohol level. According to FoodMarble, certain foods that don't gel with your system cause a buildup of gas in your gut.

That gas can then pass through the bloodstream and into your lungs where it can then be measured.

Using the AIRE does take a small amount of work at first. When you exhale into the AIRE, the device monitors your FODMAP (Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides and Polyols) levels, which are a certain type of carbohydrates found in many foods that can easily ferment and turn into gas in your gut.
