The Photography Of Al Popil

Hi Don,
The Aurora Borealis as seen from Akinsdale last night.

SINC SAYS:
Nice capture Al, I'm surprised you got that much given the light pollution from the city.
A Visit To The Smoky Lake Pumpkin Festival
Our Roving Reporter dropped in to the Smoky Lake Pumpkin Festival last weekend and sent us this report.

Danny Hooper from CFCW was in charge and auctioneer.

The weights were shown in pounds as pumpkins were weighed.

It started with smaller of the huge pumpkins ended with the biggest one.

There were lots of people there, the good weather helped. We also went to their museum, which puts St. Albert's to shame. They have so much interesting stuff, all local and relevant to all ages.

Playing Tonight At LB's Pub
October 9
Greyhound Greg Podulsky (Guitar) and
Guy Gagne - Big Guy Slim (Harmonica and vocals)
Greg - Started playing guitar in the 70's, at first it was the English guys and Hendrix, later on the blues bug hit. Of course SRV, his brother Jimmie and the Thunderbirds, Ronnie Earl, Anson Funderburgh, Duke Robillard and some local guys became prime listening. Greg became one of the open stage veterans, on most Saturdays you would find him at the Commercial Hotel, or one of many competing blues jams. He mentioned he was honoured to play with his good friend Big Guy Slim at Moosehead/barsnbands on Oct.9th. I really like Greg's calmness, guitar tone and bite he adds to a set and am happy to have him back again for a visit.
Big Guy Slim - Started on guitar in the 60's, like many guys his age, after seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. In the 70's he was a HUGE FAN of blues rock by Foghat, Humble Pie and Johnny Winter, which lead him to discover Muddy Waters, Ray Charles and Junior Wells with Buddy Guy, among others. His first concert was Johnny Cash when he was about 12 years old and his first blues show was Shakin' Smith at an all-black club in Buffalo when he was 17 or 18. He started playing and singing around St. Catharines Ontario in the late 70's, then moved to Edmonton in 1980. He started leading his own band, playing guitar and singing under many different band names including The Penetrators and the Slimtones, usually as a trio or with a sax or piano when they could afford it. Started hosting the jam at The Commercial (Blues On Whyte) in 1994, where he got to play and hang with some of the great Chicago bluesmen, with his two favourites being Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Shorty Gilbert. Guy began taking up harmonica in the late 90's, actually learning it while "working" for the City Of Edmonton, and after a while started only playing harp on gigs and at jams stating "there were ALWAYS too many guitar players". He prides himself on being able to play rhythm harp and not walking on the other players whilst he does so. Can be found on recordings with Howlin' Rob East, Mister Lucky and Jimmy and the Sleepers, among others. Lately he has been working on getting his acoustic guitar blues chops happening so he can start doing some solo gigs with harp on a rack, wishing he had started the fingerpicking long ago. His current favorites are Ronnie Earl, Paul Geremia and Paul Reddick. We are excited to show you this great frontman for a first time feature Tuesday moosehead/barsnbands visit.
